Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

How does moving that step (and the cabin wall(?)) forward affect the cabin's roof & side panel, particularly the spacing at the sliding window?

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

I'm not moving the bulkhead from its previous location just moving the stair forward to give me more deck space.

There will be no affect whatsoever to the size of the cabin or location of the walls.

If you move the step, just be careful not to scalp your dome while heading down into the cabin. The top of access way can be brutal, and my door is not even installed.:black_eyed:

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Questions for anybody who has a 25 footer. I want to remove the cabin windows in the most efficient manner. As I am looking at them they look like the frame is partially bolted and partially riveted in place.

Anybody removed the windows in their 25 footer?

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Finally figure out the windows. All windows are removed on the exterior of the boat. Front windows, remove weather strip and the pop out. Side windows, remove the screens and then the two metal strips that hold the middle stationary window in place and then just lift up and remove. Actually pretty easy once I looked at it long enough.

I am not going to remove th aluminum substructure that the glass sits in since I can now do a through job of cleaning the channels.

Now I just need some warm weather to pressure wash the inside and I cans start putting her back together.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Quick update:

Drove to Chicago on Sat and picked up a 09 Evinrude ETEC 175 HP 25 inch outboard. Motor looks to be in great shape. Will post pics soon. Question, how many gallons of fuel makes sense if I am planning on lots of weekend camping trips. I currently have two 19 gallon side tanks but really want to move the tanks under the floor. Next question, I have a friend who is a really good aluminum welder, it is feasible to build your own tanks and what thickness aluminum should be used.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

dude....have some mercy on my employer, you got me drooling on their keyboard. an ETEC. wow.

current 38 gal is reasonable with that motor, but if you're custom building under the floor, i'd say build as big as you can safely fit. you DO know about the delicate art of installing alum tanks in alum boats, si? if done wrong, very easy to end up with corrosion problems, on hull or tank. gas in bilge = VERY BAD

yes, quite feasible to custom build tanks, just pricey if one is paying for that much TIG work.....or you gonna owe your buddy a lot of fishing trips. i think most comml alum tanks are about .100" but i could be wrong.

Saaaaaawwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeettttttttt!!!!!:thumb:

I'd be looking for the biggest tank you can fit under there (or two tanks). Like maybe 30 gal or more, 175 horse OB is thirsty (even E Tec's).

I'd be sticking close to craigslist looking for that V shaped belly take that came out of a dead glasser. I see em every now and then in the $50 range.

Congrats on your new engine!

Awesome choice on the power! Was looking at the new 'Rudes myself, since the Admiral now wants to go with a O/B and bracket too. I see Moeller makes a nice big unit that would fit nicely under the floor between the stringer and chine; but you would want 2 to keep things balanced. Would also raise fuel capacity to 70 gallons; which would come in handy if you decided to do the great loop.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

The center opening is only 24" wide so I am going with two 25 gals one on each side. I started adding up the total cost of building tanks and all up I'm probably only saving a 100.00 bucks. Gonna buy Moeller plastic

Really goin to need some help with rigging the motor. Never done that type of work before.

Grab yurself the gallon kit, you'll have plenty and it'll be cheaper than buying qt. kits.

Crazy idea, why wouldn't a plastic gas tank from a car/truck work. I know the come in the 25 to 35 gal range for trucks and I bet I could find some at the local salvage yard???

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Finally built a stand for the behemoth Evinrude 175

Motor..JPG

I've decide I am going to build a mock up bracket and swim platform out of luan to make sure I have all the dimensions exactly right. My floatation pod is not going to be square so I have added some complexity into the equation.

Every time I walk into the shop I will now have motivation to really get this thing moving.

Anybody know about rigging an outboard from a controls' perspective. It looks like the control and oil container come as a kit for about $1K. Little more pricy than I would have thought but it looks like you get some gauge type display as well.????

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

That new E-Tec is purty!!! Don't know much about rigging an out board, but they have a bunch of info here:continuousWave: Whaler: Reference: E-TEC Rigging . From what I gather, if you run one of the new ICON throttles, there are no cables, and they are pretty easy to hook up. Been looking for prices, but haven't found any.
