Re: Slow Rebuild of Grandfathers 1972 Starcraft Holiday

I'm down the road from you in Burlington (I launch at Shelburne Bay Park), and I'm about to start a backyard fiberglass resto. If you need any help with heavy lifting I'd be glad to lend a quick hand. I've also gotten less than half-hearted encouragement from my better half, but, luckily, I've got a well-placed sturdy tree limb and a come-a-long. PM me if you need help flipping the hull or anything. I check the site often.

I will start a thread here this week, so perhaps we can commiserate over our mutual weather-related challenges going into the rapidly approaching cold and dark of northern VT winter.

hey thanks!

I launch out of shelburne bay as well. Hope to secure a mooring for next summer as well.

Sure, let me know if you are stuck as well.

For the endcap:
attachment.php

Send MichaelP a PM, he may still have some end caps, or might be setup to make some more. Didn't he move or build a new shop or something? He did fabricate & offer endcaps to the Starmada....

Someone also posted a DIY endcap fabrication thread. If you can cut the aluminum, you might be able to find someone to just weld them up for you. Unless you have lots of experience welding aluminum....

Re: Slow Rebuild of Grandfathers 1972 Starcraft Holiday

We have the Dalai Lama coming this weekend to the college. So I will be working on Saturday. Then its the obligatory
meet and creep with friends from the hometown, but Sunday I will be prepping the motor for storage and removing it.

I plan on storing in my heated basement. I should still fog it and do the normal winter prep correct?

what do people like for fogging oil? I will also check the lower unit (should have by now) I knew the previous owner so I am
not that worried about it.

Wonder if he loves Starcrafts to?

What are peoples thoughts on Fuel tanks? This boat originally was set up with a built in tank, but its long gone.

Does anyone know what size tank will fit in its original location? looks to be under the port side splash well.

Thinking I would like to have a built in tank. good, bad or ugly?

Just checking in.

On gas tank, I can't really get a good look at your splashwell compartments from the pics.

It terms of size, it depends on how much room you have; how long or far you intend to cruise and whether your water is serviced by a marina if you need a mid-day re-fill on go-go juice.

Even though I don't anticipate marathon sessions in my boat, I am going with a 12 gallon built in tank (the smallest they make), instead of the portable 6 gallon one I originally had in there. That way, I can just pull the boat up to the pump and jam the nozzle in the gunwale. I don't have to dig the portable tank out of its little cubby, remove it for filling and put it back in, or worse, risk spilling gas all in my boat.

I also move the tank up front to the bow because I wanted to counter-balance and center the weight up there.

Decide on where you want and then see if an internal tank fits... You can look at CL, ebay or even retail sites like iboats, Jamestowne distributors, etc..

Being a Holiday, I'd be shooting for a tank up under the bow there. Like PMC says, size depends on your usage.

Portable would be fine, permanent would be all the better. Craigslist is a good place to hunt for gear like that.

I think a 12 gallon would be fine. Champlain has a lot of marinas dotted around the lake.

Is the gas under the bow better for weight or for space? Guessing weight?

I scour craigslist like its my job. Only got beat once on a fridge and at the time knew I shouldnt buy it but I was there so I took it.
made horrible ice cubes...

I like a nice big livewell up on the bow for counterweight and balance... but that's probably just me.

Doods, he has a closed bow, with a windshield....

Jumping over the windshield to get to the livewell box cut into the bow, must be a southern thing eh??

hahah, I thought about converting to an open bow for about 3 seconds and quickly shut that idea down.

Probably going to do a livewell mid boat somewhere that doubles as a seat.

If fishing isn't a primary use, a cooler converts fairly easy & isn't really installed in the boat.... That'd save under seat space for other storage....

It wouldn't be a closed bow with windshield when I got done with it!;)

Yeah, I forgot it was a closed bow, and under the bow is a great place for a fuel tank on one of those.

Closed bows are kinda cool in a nostalgic-retro kind of way, and if the boat is big enough you don't miss the room it takes up.

That much more since it came from grandpa. I'm all about chopping boats to suit the need but I couldn't do it to this one, just a respect thing I suppose;):)

The lama is all done!

I feel the same though..

Running down to gramps to see if I can find the bimini top, spare tire for the trailer and the tarps he used to cover her up.
Hopefully be back home tomorrow to get the motor off, dash out and the floor removed? 4 hours I am guessing.

Anything I should weary of when taking eveything out? Im going to try to keep everything as intact as I can. So I can use it all as templates.
