Good looking boat Bob! Once you redo it, it'll look fantastic propelled by that 140! Keeping the Red?

Pretty cool looking HOJ Bob, it'll be interesting to see what kind of silk pure you'll turn that thing into.

I take it that the PT is going well for your knees and you'll be ready to strap on a pair of skis and be pulled around the lake when that thing is done?;)

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

Uhhhh the knees.....not great. Had a 2nd operation on the left replacement knee about 2 weeks ago but it is better. Still doing PT and it is a PITA. So in the passing time....since I put the boat project to bed..... I have the motor in my son's garage (no room for a boat :() that I will tinker with..... and I have been concentrating on one of my other hobbies.... guns. I glass bedded an older remington 788 and I am refinishing the stock...... coming out quite nice. I have to admit I wish the internet was around 35 years ago ....... things would have been easier.

Yep, WOG hit it on the head..... we are anticipating "Sandy" coming next week but I think VT will only get wind and rain. It was good to get the Sidewinder buttoned up for that.

Very nice looking project you have acquired, Sir!

I would like to come aboard, also, and see how it develops...

Stay safe and may Sandy be nothing more than some windy rain...:)

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

I envy you Bob for the knee replacements.....i was suppose to have one of miine done about 16 years ago....told the doc that he could go @&$^@& himself.....
your bigger projects will be waiting for you when you and/or the weather is ready....i guess thats one of the nice things about these boat restorations...there's always some smaller projects associated with them that you can do indoors.

and with that...i give you my 1000th post salute :D

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

Okay the time has come to pull this project up.

I stripped the carpet, filled two trash bags with garbage that was in the hull and started to demolition. ALL of the demolition did not require a single tool yet. I ripped out the fiberglass seat bases by hand and low and behold..... a BAND AID repair had been done. Since the hull is a 1974 I was not surprised.

Pieces of plywood came out with fiberglass that was not attached properly. When I got to the true deck (which is very small) the plywood was PULP. The single stringer is not collapsed but I will investigate more when I strip out some more of the rot.

WET - the original decking is soaked. This is a prime example of why people should never just place another piece of wood over the top to cover a soft deck spot.

Notice the good adhesion to the piece of wood that ran down the center of the hull!

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

So far the stringer is looking good. I discovered yet another gallon or so of water inside the hull and now I am going to let the Sun do it's work and dry things out a bit.

This should be a fairly easy fix because that section of deck was a 1/2" X 31" X 8' and that is what I am going to replace it with. I am planning on cutting a portion of the splashwell away to do the transom. It will be the fastest way. Well this will give me a chance to gather some supplies.

The wife has been watching and is liking the idea of keeping this boat for the fleet. :)

A bud had the same boat with a Mercury 150 TOP and it was a beast. I am looking forward to this splash. Good luck!

With the Admiral onboard, you're 3/4 of the way done. :) She's gonna a nice boat when you finish. She looks fast on the trailer.

photo (31).jpgphoto (32).jpgSliced the splashwell off and the transom was/is soaking wet.
Interesting things I found. The boat is a 1974 and actually very nice construction. The stringer is fine :) and in the wet transom there was actually a layer of fiberglass between the 2 pieces of 3/4

I have "most" of the transom removed and I have to pick away to clear the rest of it. I figure I have the lower 6-8" left which I have to dig out of the fiberglass

The challenge will be flipping that over...... I bet it is going to cost me a BBQ meal and a couple cases of beverage ;)

Don't offer the "beverages" until the hull is flipped. Then celebrate! :)

Hey Bob just saw this thread. That boat looks kinda familiar for some reason. You have about as much "deck" as I do. And only the one stringer too. Very interested to see your restore.
