epoxy.JPGPicked up 1/1/2 gallons of epoxy and a roll of 3" tape today from Progressive Epoxy Polymers in NH today. It was a great rainy day for a road trip and I could not argue with the great price! (Thank you Paul from epoxyusa!!)

Requesting permission to tag along ! Cool boat ! How is the stringer constructed ? Multi-layers of ply ? It looks pretty wide ..

Progress. Laminated 2 pieces of 3/4 with a layer of csm /epoxy in the middle. Getting very close to mounting the transom and deck piece. Used that new epoxy and it is nice. A simple 2:1 mixture.

Now here is a real head scratch-er....... look at this photo of the rear of the transom......

DSC00951.JPGDSC00952.JPG Do you see it? Look carefully.......... This boat has had two different motors mounted on it (Maybe more in the last 39 years) and NONE of the holes for the mounts are centered or level......... Just a bunch of holes that will be epoxy filled as far as I am concerned. The drain hole in the transom is not quite centered but it is close.

Ayuh,.... Hulls are Never perfectly symmetrical, in what I've seen,...

Are ya basin' yer "Center" on the bottom's keel line, or the v of the transom,..??

I glassed up a number of them on mine, they eased the merc down on the transom and drilled new ones. I filled the drain hole also and re-drilled it so that it was as close as I could get it to the bottom of the bilge.

That drain is almost centered on the v-bottom/keel line. I ordered some new brass drain tubes too. That transom is almost 3/8" thick at the drain hole.

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

Progress - The transom wood is in (not finished but in) and used some peanut butter to fill many of the excess holes in the transom. Look at the fill marks and you will see a center line that I figured out today.

IMG_1344.JPG A few realizations about working on a glasser........... waiting for epoxy to harden is time consuming........ when I replaced the transom wood I realized I had effectively closed off the drain. Ran to home depot and got a hole saw bit for the drill. With rain in the forecast and OMG we have had a record setting wet Summer the drilling of the drain hole moved up the priority list. I would have dropped in the deck but I have more epoxy work ahead for the transom.

Oh yippee I am very itchy!!!!!

I stick with the polyester because of the short work times and the much cheaper cost. You can get a lot more done in a day with it. The itching is just "excitement" oozing out of your pours :D

Just hearing that reminds me of the glass itch. When I ground out the old glass to put my new transom and stringers in I was itching for weeks. Coating yourself in talcum powder first fills the pores and stops the itch. A bit.

If you want to speed up your curing time, just experiment with the amount of hardener you are using. When I build mine in April last year, the amount of hardener varied from day to day (I like in the UK, we can literally have storm-grade weather in the morning, and sunbathing weather in the afternoon).

Keep up the good work :)

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

I will not mess arond with the epoxy mix of 2:1 since I actually enjoy the longer working time.

The "itch" is a long standing joke between the aluminum boat owners and the fiberglass boat owners who do re-builds ;)

Note to self......... remember even one drop of mixed epoxy resin can get under the wedding band. Since I no longer work around heavy equipment, I never take it off. Well today I had a strange feeling........ yup the ring was stuck. I used cooking oil to remove it and my wife just laughed.

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

I don't like those blue vinyl glove that so many wear working on motors and the like. But working with resin, they might be the way to go. My tinny still doesn't have a drop of resin in her. :watermelon:

Re: Sidewinder (Cobra) 16 SS

It may be a glasser but my aluminum boat skills took over  :D

Transom is in and rock solid....... deck is in but needs tabs

IMG_1348.JPGIMG_1350.JPGadd in some aluminum bracing and knee braces. The knee braces are angled but the picture makes them look straight.

Nice looking work...i think :D....all the aluminum is causing me to loose my memory :D

So how are the aluminum braces attached to the hull / deck? Transom looks stout!
