the blue fin is only rated for 65 hp. think I would be in much trouble if I went ahead and put the 70hp on??

Probably not but you could sell the 70 and buy a 50-65 Hp motor.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

hello gentleboaters,
i am a beginner here, so if you can give me alittle line i appreciate it.

i came into possession of a 1980 freedom run-a-bout sf-167 16ft bass/ski boat. im hoping the best part is i took it as partial payment on a motor replacement ($200). i got it from sitting in az sun for 3 yrs uncovered. the haul seems to me to be in good condition except for oxidation and minor scratches. interior has 3 1" tears but in decent condition but faded. the mercruiser 140 had pure white oil and water in crankcase. removed head to find 3" crack accross combustion chamber. bought good, used replacement head for $100. needs bellows and gibler bearing. u-joints good. alpha 1 seems good, havent taken apart yet. glass good. deck wood has turn to dust. removed fuel tank, fuel still good. emptied and flushed. front tank support completely rotted away. removed support to find stringers rotted top to bottom at support. wiring need to be redone it has been rednecked. all cables are alittle sloppy. hydraulics functioning and no leaks. air pump bad. walk through window will not close completely.

i really look forward to your reply with your wisdom. my first boat, always wanted a boat. i will doing all the work myself, im a certified mechanic and fabricator for automotive, commercial, and industrial.

Doesn't sound like a good one to me bp. There's gotta be a better hull out there to put your now working 140 in. I'm also not a big fna of the idea of an I/O in a 16'. Lots of valuable deck real estate being taken up by the motor. Got any pics?

That's a sharp looking boat but it seems to me working with glass boats has to be a labor of love.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

1. Good hull----Bad stringers/Floor/Jury is still out on transom
2. Good engine and/or drive----Runs her to 47 on the GPS
3. Good interior---What is that?
4. Good trailer---Yup
5. Collectible/rare/sentimental status---Nope
6. Because (I...wife, child, dad, etc) likes it---Me so yes

What about this reason?

I knew nothing about boats, bought this one thinking it just needed about 1k in work and now it looks more like 3k! but I refuse to not bring something back to life if I can?

Honestly I picked it up for $1,500.00 and figure for about 3k I can be $4,500 into a boat that would be a lot nicer than anything I can buy for $4,500 and know that it is 100% solid and safe for my family. That is all due to the folks here on iBoats. I was a lost soul at first....still am half the time.

You're a glutton for punishment but that too is a nice looking boat. I agree 100% on the money thing. For $4500 you'll be good as new vs buying a similarly priced boat that's half junk. The key is to never, never keep track of the time you have invested, and enjoy the pride of having done it when you float her the first time.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

My very recently acquired project:

1981 Bayliner Victoria 2781
Volvo-Penta 260A

Good solid hull, but many years of paint jobs of questionable quality just above the parting line and below the water line. Rest of hull is original gel coat and looks mostly decent.

Motor is unknown at this point. Previous owner said it was running "a little rough" last season, and had sold it to one buyer before me who brought it back complaining of water in the oil. I got a much better price as a result, and have not yet found evidence of water in the oil.

Engine bay wiring will need to be cleaned up and portions redone for esthetic and safety sake. Not every previous owner who owned a roll of tape and a pair of wire cutters should have.

The interior is 'eh'. I could leave it as is, since most people will be standing on deck with fishing poles most of the time, but I can't resist the lure of a project, so I will be at least tearing out the floor in the galley and aft cabin (there are some suspicious spots that suggest replacement) and removing the wall coverings. I'll rewire below deck while it's empty and repair any thing along the stringers that becomes visible.

I will most likely convert the bow v-berth and galley into a larger salon area but retain the galley.

Deck and hull gelcoat will be buffed where exposed, and I will investigate what I can do to either remove the paint or paint over it in the places where somebody used a roller facepalm.gif

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

Ok, here's one... 1961, 32ft CC Clipper.
1 good hull ( kinda?) it's very reparable with my skills.
2 good motors ( rebuilt Origanl twin CC 283's
3 good interior ( just needs to be cleans up after sitting for a few years. Vinyl is all in good shape.
4 good trailer no ( no trailer)
5 collectible ( not sure) / rare ( meh..) sentimental status my dad had her twin sister when I was a kid! Loved that boat!! ( this cancels out any other factors! LOL
6 My Girlfriend likes it.. (see rule 1.. If she likes it it will happen.. ( Even if it takes an act of God)
7.. ( my own rule) I want it! And it was free so anything I put into it I'm money ahead.
I still can't get pictures to show up on here so just follow the links( sorry folks)

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I saw one at the ramp and had to have one...
hull was good to the waterline...
motor was there...
interior not there...
trailer decent...
definitely a collectors item...
girl friend thinks it's cool...
I have replaced the planked bottom and currently staining and varnishing, getting close to flip it back onto the trailer. I paid 1900.00... It will be worth more than I'll have in it...so it's most definitely worthy!!

1960 chris craft sportsman...14 months so far!
