@Greg: If ya paid a little too much in hindsight, who's counting anyway. That's a nice looking resto and a really sharp looking paint scheme and boat. That Johnson cleaned up nice too.

paid too much for it in retrospect.

At $1600? I don't think so. How much should a Johnson 115 and a nice galv trailer go for eh? You got the boat for free bud! :D

Greg. I followed your restore thread and all I can say is I am glad you went for it. You did an Outstanding job on that boat. It looks better then most brand new boats. If you truly bought it for $1600 and had a good motor and trailer I think you did well. I call that one WORTHY.

That's sort of what I figured also at the time.

Well, for what ever reason my pics will not upload. I keep getting an error. However I gutted the nymph, re-floored, re-foamed, re-painted, and re-upholstered. A 180 turn around if you ask me....... I wish I could get the pics up.

BTW.... I love all the restro's on this forum, keep the pics comming even if I can't.

@Greg..."VERY MUCH WORTHY" I saw your resto thread also, and I have to say I think you did just fine.

@Betterthan...you have aleready started the resto, so a moot point, but still gets a "WORTHY" rating :)

@SBL...let's see...the hull looks like swiss cheese, so #1?--no. Not sure about your engine. You say it runs, but you may have destroyed it by playing with it, and the lower unit was suspect to begin with I believe, so #2--no. #3?--ummm...no. Your trailer rolls, but I seem to remember it needed welding and was quite rusty. I may be wrong here, but that is what I seem to remember, so, #4--no. It's not collectable, rare, or was not a family heirloom, so #5--no. That only leaves #6. You are not married, so the automatic worthy is out. Heck, at this point even if you sleep in that thing, or plan on putting a dress on it and taking to your prom that only leaves #6 as a -maybe- , because you think it is the coolest thing that *almost* floats. I give you a 1/2 point for #6. That leaves you with 1/2 point out of a possible 6, with a minimum of 2 out of 6 needed for a "WORTHY" rating. You do the math.

My 93 (I know, not that old) barn-find, so to speak......PO said it was "Leaking-Water" and he was afraid to take his family out in it anymore.............Original drive-bellows dated 11/92 had a 1-inch split in it.............I'm $3196.00 deep.............WORTHY!!!!

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

New rule: the project boat in question must have at least two (2) of the six (6) redeeming qualities listed below to be considered for project worthy status.

1. Good hull
2. Good engine and/or drive
3. Good interior
4. Good trailer
5. Collectable/rare/sentimental status
6. Because (insert person's name here...wife, child, dad, etc) likes it

Let the games begin!

Mine gets a 2.5.

Engine was solid, Hull was good, trailer was debateable/not too terrible to fix up.

$1500 for a good running Johnson 120 with a good hull is what sold me.

I was a little delusional on some other aspects. The "new deck" I thought I bought it with was a sheet of plywood with carpet on it over the old deck....

I don't keep a running total but I would guess I'm around the $4k mark all said and done. Probably could've done some things a bit cheaper, but I was in a hurry last season to get it on the water quickly. I still love it. :D

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I have to run this one through the gauntlet because I have an 18' right now, and obviously bigger is better. I need some ammo when I try running this one past the copilot, so help me out a little. She appears to have good bones, that plywood looks sketchy but plywood is cheap and these transoms are pretty easy.

There's no chance of me getting a bigger motor, any chance a 90 Etec would get this sled to plane? I don't need a speed demon.

@sub... Looks like you got the good hull and good trailer down. You have the prerquisite 2 of 6 to be deemed "WORTHY", but you already knew that. :) You need justification. Bigger is better, but this is out of my experience field. I know nothing about deep water fishing boats. When it comes to fishing boats, If it ain't a bass boat, I have no experience with 'em. I would think the 90hp would move it just fine, but let's see if any others come in here first, before you take this one to the Admiral for approval.

That looks like an Grumman or more likely a Blue Fin from when Blue Fins were good. Should be a fantastic hull. A 90 will propel it just fine. My buddy has a 21' Starcraft Chieftain which has a cabin and everything on it and he only has a 90. It gets up on plane quickly. Only tops out at like 27 but planes nicely. You'll do much better if you keep your build light.

It's a Blue Fin, I'm guessing this is mid early 80's? Any idea on when Blue Fins were no longer good? Any thoughts on the price? My hidden boat slush fund would dictate that it's priced about $400 too high. Then again I paid a lot less for my 18'Sylvan. Anybody want to guess on that plywood......is it dark because it's junk or just sealed? In actuality it can't be that much heavier than an 18, maybe a couple hundred pounds?

In my opinion the 90's Spectrum Blue Fins weren't so hot. The ad says that one is an '85 and I would imagine that's correct.

is this something you own or just a random pic?

My buddy stores his boat at the yard with this, well, umm, boat? Took that pic a few years ago. I suspect there is more delamnation and the transom has completely fallen off by now...

Somebody should really just give him a match to put her out of her misery.

That was my exact thought when I saw it...

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I have two rules only.

Is the hull at least fixable. and
Will I live long enough to get it done.

Thats it, the rest will follow.

I dont even have to like it. As long as I can tinker and get something accomplished...I'm good.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I was looking for a parts boat last week. I need outdrive parts for my 1987 32' Bayliner 3250 Contessa. Twin 260a engines, with 290 outdrives.

So I happened across a 1984 28' Bayliner Contessa twin engine ... Unfortunately, two volvo 4 cylinders, plus two Volvo 270 outdrives... Not at all a good match, the 270 parts are all different than the 290, etc.

So, I thought that I might part it out, or swap 270 parts for 290. But then I stareted looking at it. The hull is pretty nice. Needs bottom paint, but otherwise solid. The outdrives were rebuilt about 6 years ago, so they should be decent. The engines are "supposed" to be OK, winterized a couple of years ago. I checked the oil quickly, haven't had a chance to do anything more on the engines.

The boat was not wrapped, and the hatches were leaking into the cabin. So it needs new carpet (have the old as a template), redone V berth, redone side benches/sleeping area. I think I might also pull out the stove and sink, and all of the old cabinets, they are pretty dated. Put in a new sink, cabinet, and a microwave. Carpet, redo the V berth fabric (reuse the foam, - maybe - only recently started leaking.) That is just a matter of stapling new fabric over teh foam to teh boards of teh V berth.

I think I can "steam clean" teh 3 or 4 small bad areas on the headliner and save that.

I bought 3 sets of "wine"/maroon pillow cover sets at IKEA, with about 8 covers in each sets, for $90. They zip over cushions on one model of couch taht they are discntinuing. So I could use my own foam to create new benches on the existing plywood bases, or buy the IKEA pillows to fit the covers. Might even try to shove in two IKEA couches, with built in storage in one and a bed in the other one, one on each side. I also bought a nice, new latex mattress at IKEA for the aft cabin, that is all that was in there, a queen mattress.

The two things that are bothering me are :

1) cranking the engines and seeing that they turn over, maybe compression test, then try to get them started on muff's, with gas from an external can, and

2) I am not sure where the water that was leaking in the front corner of the V berth was coming from! It was actually dry below the plywood up there, stringers looked fine. The other water was clearly from a hatch, or from a window. Not sure where in teh upper deck/anchor area I could be getting that water! (There are 5 screw holes where something was removed from the deck just in front of the windshield, but that is quite a ways.)

I guess I better check the mid cabin stringers too, I know that the 3250 is infamous for having rot in the cabin, apparently from leaks under one window, per one 3250 rebuild project here. Are these Contessa's similar to the 3250?

I stilll have a day or two to say yes or no. Guess I'll buy a battery and head back out tomorow and see what I can figure out on the engines. .

Price - $1,225. No trailer. I suppose I could always part it out, but I'd really rather fix something right now ... (my 32' is at a marina, I let them repair and service that one.)

I am not working, so I have the time, but also have some chronic pain. Kind of a trade off. Something to do, add value, a bit of a sense of accomplishment. I would sell some other hobby equipment to pay for the rehab.

Best,
MIchael

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I love this thread!! It makes me feel better about my resto!! It's a 1986 bayliner 1950! Engine/outdrive: good! Hull:good stringers:good floor had some soft spots! So replacing all of it while I have it apart I'm thinking of doing a transom!!can't wait to get it done it's my first boat an I'm loving doing the rebuild! I am taking the engine out an removing the rest an after that it's all building up from there an I think that will help seeing progress happening can't wait to pumped!! I deem mine quite worthy!!
