Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

I love this thread!! It makes me feel better about my resto!! It's a 1986 bayliner 1950! Engine/outdrive: good! Hull:good stringers:good floor had some soft spots! So replacing all of it while I have it apart I'm thinking of doing a transom!!can't wait to get it done it's my first boat an I'm loving doing the rebuild! I am taking the engine out an removing the rest an after that it's all building up from there an I think that will help seeing progress happening can't wait to pumped!! I deem mine quite worthy!!

Rating: Sounds worthy to me!

I was looking for a parts boat last week. I need outdrive parts for my 1987 32' Bayliner 3250 Contessa. Twin 260a engines, with 290 outdrives.

So I happened across a 1984 28' Bayliner Contessa twin engine ... Unfortunately, two volvo 4 cylinders, plus two Volvo 270 outdrives... Not at all a good match, the 270 parts are all different than the 290, etc.

So, I thought that I might part it out, or swap 270 parts for 290. But then I stareted looking at it. The hull is pretty nice. Needs bottom paint, but otherwise solid. The outdrives were rebuilt about 6 years ago, so they should be decent. The engines are "supposed" to be OK, winterized a couple of years ago. I checked the oil quickly, haven't had a chance to do anything more on the engines.

The boat was not wrapped, and the hatches were leaking into the cabin. So it needs new carpet (have the old as a template), redone V berth, redone side benches/sleeping area. I think I might also pull out the stove and sink, and all of the old cabinets, they are pretty dated. Put in a new sink, cabinet, and a microwave. Carpet, redo the V berth fabric (reuse the foam, - maybe - only recently started leaking.) That is just a matter of stapling new fabric over teh foam to teh boards of teh V berth.

I think I can "steam clean" teh 3 or 4 small bad areas on the headliner and save that.

I bought 3 sets of "wine"/maroon pillow cover sets at IKEA, with about 8 covers in each sets, for $90. They zip over cushions on one model of couch taht they are discntinuing. So I could use my own foam to create new benches on the existing plywood bases, or buy the IKEA pillows to fit the covers. Might even try to shove in two IKEA couches, with built in storage in one and a bed in the other one, one on each side. I also bought a nice, new latex mattress at IKEA for the aft cabin, that is all that was in there, a queen mattress.

The two things that are bothering me are :

1) cranking the engines and seeing that they turn over, maybe compression test, then try to get them started on muff's, with gas from an external can, and

2) I am not sure where the water that was leaking in the front corner of the V berth was coming from! It was actually dry below the plywood up there, stringers looked fine. The other water was clearly from a hatch, or from a window. Not sure where in teh upper deck/anchor area I could be getting that water! (There are 5 screw holes where something was removed from the deck just in front of the windshield, but that is quite a ways.)

I guess I better check the mid cabin stringers too, I know that the 3250 is infamous for having rot in the cabin, apparently from leaks under one window, per one 3250 rebuild project here. Are these Contessa's similar to the 3250?

I stilll have a day or two to say yes or no. Guess I'll buy a battery and head back out tomorow and see what I can figure out on the engines. .

Price - $1,225. No trailer. I suppose I could always part it out, but I'd really rather fix something right now ... (my 32' is at a marina, I let them repair and service that one.)

I am not working, so I have the time, but also have some chronic pain. Kind of a trade off. Something to do, add value, a bit of a sense of accomplishment. I would sell some other hobby equipment to pay for the rehab.

Best,
MIchael

Rating: To me, worthy IF the engines and drives fully check out. But will be pricey to fix up.

Contrary to what many believe. "It was free" does not mean it is worth restoring. LOL.

Re: Rules for: Is this boat worthy of a restoration project?

Ok, I'm new to the forum. Let's get that out of the way, along with the fact that I have never owned a boat before and I'm learning the lingo as I go so please be patient.

I bought a 1973 Glastron V-162 futura with a Evinrude 115hp OB for $950 The trailer is great, the motor runs terrific. The bad, well I found out the transom is rotted and the floor is spongy in the rear of the boat.

I've been looking for years for an old car to restore, but I think I just found my project. I'm willing to learn and patient. I'm not so sure about the patients of my wife and kids though. We took it out once and it was a blast, but that's how we found out the transom leaks where the motor mounts are bolted in. So I think it needs to be replaced, and they're gonna be bummed that it will be out of commission for a while.

Anyway here are the current pics.

I know it's far away, I'll get better pics, this is in my driveway.

So, I think this is worthy because the motor/drive is good, the trailer is good and my wife and kids like it. Oh and most importantly, I can afford it! :D

I agree. Good motor and rebuildable hull for little startup cost = worthy

@ static...The wife and kids like it...that makes it an automatic "WORTHY" via the number 6 rule. The good motor, hull, and trailer just add to the worthiness. I think you did just fine. Welcome to boating and to iboats! It is a requirement though, that you start a restoration thread, and take lots of pics. Otherwise you will be deemed unworthy, and we will send Guido to your home to flog you with a wet noodle. :D Congrats again!

I got one for ya. Paid 350 bucks for the boat and trailer. This is what it has going for it. Good hull, good trailer and great price. Oh yea, this is what the wife and kids wanted.

But...he's got the #6 rule...wife AND kids liked it...he pretty much has no choice at this point. Otherwise it would have had only the trailer going for it, and maybe the hull. I know exactly *squat* about jet boats' hulls, so that one is a mystery to me.

Yeah but if the wife and kids like it, are they really liking the existing boat or the mental image of the potential finsihed restored boat?? I would say worthy IF it still had the engine in it, running or not. Replacing that power plant will be costly. Just my opinion of course. But...you know what they say...beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

I vote worthy with a lot of patience.....I would rather put in a new power plant than deal with an unknown power.....to me the motor is the heart it gets you there and back and it if it is not right.....you go nowhere

Here is something to add to this--------how long do you estimate repairs considering the person has a 40 hour job wife kids and their activities and considering funds are not limited for supplies.......I am just learning how much time it takes.....my simple little project boat is I am estimating going to take 3 months before it is completed......I could only imagine if I had to get motors seats etccc.....but, I do now understand why some of the restores are going on or have passed 2 years

I have an engine and all of the parts to put it back together. The only things I don't have are the interior but I have built several interiors for jet boats. When the wood frames are done just drop them off at the upholstry shop and pick them up a few weeks later and bolt in.

You also get some bonus points on this for having a mostly stripped out interior which makes it a blank canvas without having to do that work yourself.

As for how long it takes, I'd say it's ongoing. Mine was about 2 months, I made some mistakes so when I take it apart again it will hopefully only take a couple weeks. I started mine with the deadline of a weeklong cabin rental which may have contributed to some mistakes but also ensured it got done.

Well then by all means - WORTHY!

The length of time is not a big factor. I have another boat to play with while building this one. When this one gets close I will sell the other boat.....assuming we can still afford to buy fuel.......and finish it up.
