You can't believe how happy I was when it came out! I was already devising plans to get it out! I had thought I should replace those, nah I don't want to spend that much....not even going to think about not doing it next time. At least it yielded now and not under load. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

A goodie box showed up this morning. Very impressive, ordered Sunday, at my house at 10 am today. I can't complain about Summit's delivery time!

I can vouch for that! Ordered some stuff on a Saturday afternoon and it arrived that Monday.

Should be smooth sailing from here on out! Knock on wood! Getting excited!

Cheers............................Todd

I thought I would post a quick update. I ended up having to make an emergency run to the lake to deal with an issue on my dock, so I didn't have a chance to work on the engine until today. I actually had to do some fabrication for the dock before I left, and had a mess in the shop to clean up. Once I got that done, I pulled the crank and cam. I didn't have a bottoming tap to chase the cap threads last time, but all the bolts went in nicely by hand. However, I decided to order a tap at the same time as the studs. Taps of course make metal shavings, which I didn't want falling down into the clean block. So I cleaned all the errant assembly lube off of the bottom of the block and main girdles, then taped everything up.

I chased the threads, which were all good other than two that were a little tight the last half turn. I turned it upside down and cleaned out the holes with break cleaner......brilliant whoever invented it! The all looked nice clean when I turned it back over. I had been wondering if the support for the oil pickup was going to be an issue. Sure enough I mocked up the studs and it is.

The stud that has the nut and washer on it is also the one the pickup tube needs to mount to. That is why the bolt that broke had the stud on top of it. It is just a simple stamped sheet metal brace, but it is the only thing supporting the back of the pickup tube. I was hoping there would be enough stud sticking above the nut to allow me to sandwich the brace on with another nut. But no such luck. I can't seem to win with this bottom end! I have an email in to ARP, I am hoping maybe they have a slightly longer stud that will work. This is the only set they list for the engine, hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow.

Might be Micky, I figure we will see what ARP has to say. But the pickup is 16" or so long, seems like a long way without some kind of support. Might call Moroso also...thanks for the idea!

Well did a search and Melling makes some for it, guess what, they all have the support bracket. So I guess we will see what ARP says.

Arch, you know the answer. Buy more parts from us.

One would think a longer stud would be part of a stud kit since all 250s have a pickup support.

If you get a stud from ARP, boil it for about 30 minutes and throw the pot away.

Quick update, I talked to the guy who did my head and he is sending me the offending bolt. Apparently he has a stock pile of them, I can't believe a bolt is going to hold things up 2 weeks! Good thing I have plenty of spare time lol!

so crazy, i could have sworn they made a threaded tube for those to omit the bolt with the stud on top , could be wrong though

So the main bolt I need didn't get shipped till Thursday.....which I thought would more or less kill this weekend....and I'll be damned, the USPS came through!

Back to the engine after I cut out a 4' tall "4" and "0" to put in a friends yard for her birthday! The nice thing about having a building like the hangar is you can always find a random old sheet of plywood in there, kind of like a mini home depot lol! Hope everyone else is having a productive weekend also. Happy Easter!

If you look on the right side you will see where I have number each cap on the plywood in sharpie. I did not number the caps, just took care to keep them in order. I also took a lot of pictures before I took them off. Each cap has a unique number cast into it, just right of where GM is cast. I hadn't paid a lot of attention to the bottoms of the caps, but noticed yesterday that some had stamped them on the right side, in the shoulder where it is machined for the bolt. Just for grins I thought I would check them to make sure they corresponded to where I have them. Everything is hunky-doory except 5 and 6. The stamped numbers show that I have them backwards.....I panicked, went back to the photos and I have them in the same order as they came off! So did the guy who built it before me screw up putting the caps on or did he mis-number them? I am not sure how good you can see it in the pics, but I studied everything very closely and it is clear that there is a conflict of some sort. I also seem to recall the most inconsistent, but withing speck readings on the plastiguage were on those two mains. Any thoughts? I am going to need to think about this since the caps and the blocks are machined together.....
