if your block is fine id just get it align bored with caps in place and have crank checked and assembled by the machine shop so you know the rotating assembly is solid .... im betting the remanifactured engine is looking a bit better now huh , lol i know it was large coarse salt i just tossed into those flesh wounds but i had to :)

Here is an update sort of. I had time last night to tinker with the crank. I put the front and back bearings in, snugged them down. I had about .0015 or so of run out with the dial indicator in the middle journal. I went ahead and put the caps on as numbered and torqued things down. I am just not really happy with this thing, it is really hard to turn. I am taking a few days off from bouncing around in the house and heading to the lake to vegetate and think about this. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am thinking either have the crank turned or have the crank turned and find a new block....we are getting to the point of that is the only thing I haven't updated. The bores are ok on this one, but If I turn the crank I am almost thinking why not find another block and spring for the bucks to have he machined? I think I will call my local machine shop tomorrow and see if they can source one. Boats are a cheap hobby right lol!

Well crap!
So at what point does it get tight? When you torque down the end caps? Or one of the middle ones? This is with no rod caps installed yet right? I have to admit I think I'd be getting a little miffed at that block myself, especially with it being bored .060 over already.

Lol Micky, Yeah I had your words echoing in my head the whole time we were building mine. So -far knock on wood- I seem to have gotten away with it.

Cheers...................Todd

I took a few days off and went to the lake. Trip was cut short by our springtime weather, but a good trip. I am suspicious of caps 4 and 6. I took 4, 5, and 6 off first. I spun it before and after removing all of them. There seems to be a point of highest resistance, which I marked and a corresponding one to a lesser degree 180 to the first. With all the bearings out, except the front and rear, I put my dia indicator back on each of the journals. When I spun it 4 was the worse with almost 002 of runout, and was repeatable. That roughly corresponded to the marks on the crank. 6 was similar but with about 0015 of in about the same position. 5 had about .0015, but didn't correspond to the marks. 2 and 3 were more in the 001 range. Not sure what all that means, using a Chinese indicator, but seems suspect. We will find out soon enough, I am dropping the crank off at the machine shop of Friday. I talked to them and they wanted to start with spinning the crank to check for runout.

I also put my machinist strait edge on the bearing seats on the block in 3 locations (about 4, 6 and 8-oclock). The smallest feeler gauge I have is .0015 an every one check fine with that. I didn't have the caps on however.

Oh yeah I checked the bearings also, they are standard so they should be fine. If anything they would be loose if the crank was turned.

Micky, still wouldn't do a reman.....It may take some head bashing but I will get there lol!

Seahorse, it spins great with the end caps on, just wish that was the case with all of them on. Now that I think about it the worst damage was on cylinders that are adjacent caps.....hmmm

Next update....

I was at the machine shop and......

Cost X for a rebuilt block.
Costs X+ for a reman 4.3
CostsX++ for a reman 5.0L
And sitting in the corner was a 502 that was prepped for a customer but backed out...gave me a sweet deal.

Anyone know how to swap in a 502 with a Bravo drive?

:):)

lol no sticking with the 6, should be a great engine for what I want to use it for, just a cruiser. And I like old school things, that is why I got Fuggly and not a Baja or something along those lines.

Dropped the crank

Stop doing that!

Did you lose a rod or piston when the motor went? Or possibly hydrolock? Don't remember all the damage.

Seems to be Kcassells....but that is the way it works sometimes right. I just keep bashing my head on the wall till it works lol!

OK GA I am going to refer to it as the "offending component":D

I did hydrolock it, the exhaust manifold had a leak from the water jacket to the exhaust chamber.....left it on the muffs while I looked for a tool and the water backed up into the cylinders. And me being a genius, didn't stop to think, "gee it doesn't seem to want to turn over, I should stop". Got her fired up, water and all! I have some bent rods and piston pins that will make a nice conversation piece! That is why I am suspicions that the "offending component" maybe tweaked out of round a bit.

I did get some new old stock hardware, and a gasket for the replacement manifold. I think I will work on getting it put together while I wait. I also need to install the bilge blower and vents along with some other odds and ends. So I have plenty to keep me busy this weekend.

Maybe "offensive component"? This whole motor has been "offensive"!

The adjacent caps to the damage and tight crank when torqued would make me suspicious, too. Hope the cranky guy can untweak it!

I have about 3k in parts for the offensive motor, so too late to stop now! I am still shocked I have a manifold that cost about 1k with all the accessories....and it doesn't even say Offenhauser or Edelbrock lol! Its the normal process, brand new boat one piece at a time! I do like the little 6, it should do a nice job of powering the cocktail run after I beat it into submission lol! I don't give up easily!

I hope everyone is doing well and had a great week! I have sort of a quick update on the never ending motor build. Called Wednesday and the machine shop is a bit backed up, no word on the crank yet. I did decide no mater what it is getting turned. It was pretty good but had a few very small imperfections.

This should make GA and Micky happy....after making the decision on the crank, the only thing I hadn't done is the block. So I backed up and punted. I called the guy who did my head and he is sending me a fully machined block, decked, bored, honed using a torque plate....basically new. That did make a big dent in the beer fund. I should have it next week and hopefully hear something on the crank. I do need to have the machine shop install the cam bearings...so more waiting. But this thing should run like a champ as long as I don't drop the ball on maintenance!

This news makes me less cranky! LOL

Yikes, by the time you put it together for the last time, only the head and a couple of bolts will be original if the crank can't be saved.

Have you thought about GoFundMe, Arch? Can't let the beer budget suffer!

I hope this all behind you soon, I'm running out inane and semi- witty things to say. Actually, I cringe when seeing all these setbacks after following Fugly since the beginning. I know my level of frustration is nowhere as bad as yours. You need some good news!

GA, think about it this way, you maybe running out of witty remarks, but I am running out of parts to replace lol!

Reconditioned block, turned crank, full head rebuild with mods, new pistons, recondition rods with ARP bolts, new marine grind cam, oil pump, lifters, water pump, starter, alternator, starter slave solenoid, thermostat, intake, rebuilt carb, pertronics conversion in the distributor, new fuel pump...oh yeah I bought NOS motor mount bushings, don't think I mentioned that yet....and I am forgetting things I am sure!

It can be frustrating, but very rewarding if you take your time with it.....I do want it on the water however! Should be soon! In the mean time I am going to the lake this weekend, sitting on the deck and making engine noises while looking at the water :D

Don't forget the extra Plastigage and temporary chromed valve cover and side covers.

You still have Miss Morgan - She needs exercise after a winter layover. And the rrruuummm, rrruuuummm noise will be from a motor.
