Nothing wrong with a cardboard box. Far better than running all over the shop looking for the tool you put down right there. Or was it there? Maybe over there? Oh well, off the the tool store. I have several channel locks and other tools, so I know. :blue:

I did that with my fuel pump mounting plate. Went to put the fuel pump on a couple weeks ago and couldn't find it anywhere. I'd had it and the bolts in a plastic sandwich bag. I remember taking it to work and I remember taking it over to the wire wheel and cleaning it and the bolts. But that's the last thing I remember about it. I'm sure the phone rang or one of the guys needed help with something and I'm sure I just set it down somewhere. I looked all around the boat house, all around the shop. All around my house. Finally had to buy one from Summit racing. Oh well, cheap enough. Unbelievably it's been the only part I've lost. Knock on wood

Cheers.........................Todd

It seems to happen, when I was looking for it I found the cam plug and freeze plug for the back of the block I thought I bought but couldn't find and re-ordered. Plasti guage is supposed to be here tomorrow so I should be good for the weekend. Things more or less shut down here at mid-night, so work is going to keep me hooked up the next few days....hope I have all the other parts!

Forced myself to finally clean my workbench a couple weeks ago so #1 I could locate most of my hand tools and #2 have room to rebuild the original T&T pump and cylinder assembly for the Merc. With parts all over the bench now, I at least have enough space to keep assembling as parts arrive :)

Ditto that! It seems that at least 2 or 3 times a year I just have to take a day/weekend and clean bench and table. And to make things worse, my oldest daughter uses my shop as well, so there are two of us leaving crap strewn about.

I went out to the shop tonight and gave the oil passages one last cleaning just to make sure I hadn't missed anything on the block. We are good to go there. I also started to give the crank one last cleaning and noticed that the cam drive gear didn't quite seat last weekend, it was short about .020. So I put the harmonic balancer installer on the crank, with a short piece of pipe so that the pressure was on the gear. I gave it a few good wacks with a block of wood and a hammer. Got it all pulled up nice and tight. That is it for tonight, but we should be a go for assembly on Saturday.

In the good news department all the ring gaps were nicely in spec! We are fixing to see about the crank and rods once I get the cam in next.

So I put plastiguage on the mains, torqued them to spec, then backed them off. Everything was well within the spec. Put assembly lube on everything, aligned the cam timing marks, then started torquing the caps in sequence.....I was on the final pass of 65 ft. lbs. SNAP

That is the bolt that has the stud on it to secure the oil pump pickup........I resisted the urge to throw something......then went to the house and had a beer....all I wanted to do was torque the mains and call it a day! After a beer I ventured down to the shop and started working on it with a center punch trying to turn it. To my amazement it turned, after about 5 minutes I had it out.

So I guess things are at a stop till the studs show up next week sometime. But the good news is everything turns nicely and the fix isn't bad at all on the broken bolt.

Better to happen now than when the 671 is making tons of boost. :D

Breaking any bolt when assembling w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ does get to me. A brew was a good idea.

You can never have too many good bolts holding powerful engines together.

Double check the hole just in case. Although it does sound like you "caught it just in time".

Jh bolts are the worst. We WILL NOT use them. We certify all hardware batches before use with a 3rd party onsite.. we take torque to past yield while measuring rated clamp load. If both clamping loads and torque values don't exceed rated specs we won't use them. We have also done multiple torque tests on the same Bolt. We don't reuse bolts but it's a good measure of quality if it can hit yield/clamp loads repeatedly. Bolts with jh on the head are for furniture only. My rollercoasters are safety first

luckily the lesson learned wasn't too painful, i never re-use stock bolts anymore after having same thing happen, however it didn't come out as easily as yours. either way you well on your way!
