I went to the DR yesterday, OK allergy stuff was kicking in and kicking my butt. I am native and it still kicks my butt, I feel sorry for people from other places. Welcome to everything in the air that can irritate your respiratory system lol! I picked up the pistons with the rods installed, forgot the customary pic...will get one tomorrow. I spent tonight getting the cam drive gear off the crank, took a couple heatings to 450ish but finally got it to come off. Putting it back on might be fun, I am thinking that will involve the press if I can get it in square. Anyhow I will think through that, open for suggestions.

I did get the crank journals polished with a micro fiber towel and some of the autosol. Not perfect but they do look really nice. There was some "staining" on the journals from the water oil mixture. Best description I can come up with since you can't feel it or measure it with a micrometer. I think they will work nicely for what I am doing with them. I wouldn't use them on a blown or turbo charged engine, but this one is mainly going to be pushing the cocktail cruise at 25 or so.

When we have to put things on shafts we heat to 350 deg. Smaller things we just put in oven for 20-30 min. The bigger stuff we use up to 3 big rosebuds. We also chill shafts with liquid nitrogen. Some thick welding gloves to handle part and sometimes a brass drift to tap it with hammer. Dry ice on the shaft is the same as the nitrogen.

Thanks froggy I was thinking about putting the gear in the oven for a while. Not sure exactly how I can get the crank cooled off, maybe I could build a foam box for it and some dry ice. Anyhow I have a lot of other things to do, so I will have some time to think about it. I was planning on heating the cam gear up in the oven, and at least putting the cam in the freezer, the crank is a bit long for my freezer lol!

I made some progress today, nothing very exciting mostly cleaning. I did drill the crank for a harmonic balance bolt. GM doesn't put one in from the factory which makes barring the motor over to find top dead center annoying. I bought a jig, drill bit and tap from 12 bolt . com. That is the guy who is working over my head. It worked pretty nicely, centers the bit, then it is simple as running the tap in. Sorry not the best pics, I didn't realize the focus was off!

I guess that is a great shot of my foot lol. I also cleaned up all of the polish off of the crank, air, break cleaner and parts washer. I picked up some "oil passage" cleaning brushes.

Worked nicely to get the polishing compound out of the drilled passages. I also cleaned up the oil pan, timming cover, valve cover, and rod covers. I love scraping gaskets! I also had to hammer and dolly on the oil pan a bit. Apparently someone got a bit aggressive tightening down the bolts and demppeld some of the holes in the pan. Tomorrow I am going to strip all of the above and get them ready for new paint. Also more cleaning.....I don't need any junk floating around in the oil ! So clean and re-clean!

Nice idea on the brushes. Never thought of using mine for any other task than guns.

I have some cleaning brushes, but all of them are too big.....I was standing there looking at one and thought, this looks like one of my gun cleaning brushes. So I went over to Dicks and bought a bunch for engine cleaning off of their clearance sale.

I will get some video. I actually have a lot of the build that I have never edited it, the hard drive it was on died. I had it recovered, just need to sit down and edit it. It is amazing how much work that is!

I spent some time tonight stripping the covers for the engine...valve cover, oil pan etc. The timing cover is probably chevy, it had orange paint under the black. It and the oil pan cleaned up with one coat of stripper. I used the skull and cross bones kind, not the sissy kind. The mercruiser items were a different story, apparently they used an epoxy at the factory in the 70's....5 coats on the push rod covers. This may require a little media blasting, we'll see need to sleep on this one.

Don't ask me why the one on the right cleaned up better than the one on the left.

Are the side covers aluminum? Just imagine them painted Phantom Black with polished ridges and Mercruiser. Adds a little sparkly bits,

Just a quick update. The head is ready and will be shipped back in the next few days! I am excited to see it! The other update is I haven't gotten anything done in the last week and a half. One thing about OK, if you are slightly allergic to ANYTHING, you will find out here. Pollen hit with a vengeance about two weeks ago. I got it on a Tuesday, like getting hit with a freight train, felt better weekend before last when I did the polishing, came back for round two a week ago today.....took last Thursday and Friday off....felt better this weekend but decided to just stay inside (had 25 to 30 mph winds over the weekend and Monday.....normal spring breeze) I felt good tonight but had dinner with a friend. Seems like it takes 2 weeks to get over this crud and I grew up here. I feel sorry for people who didn't, total misery! I am planning on getting going the next few night, but may get sidetracked again. I have been waiting all winter for the lake to go down for some maintenance on my dock....it gets down real close, then rains. The corp for whatever reason hasn't helped, they let the water down to 1' above normal.....then stop......I need it at normal or below....grrrr! I was watching the forecast and we might get flooding rain. So I maybe doing some welding then a non planned wading in cold water trip to the lake to get the maintenance done before the rain. Normally the water goes down 4' below normal in the winter.....go figure! From here on out the water will probably just go up creating more of a problem.....

The Corps uses the same nonsensical reasoning to control lake level on my lake. It's been more than 30 ft. higher than winter pool and right now is 4 ft. over summer pool. And full of logs from a lot of rain.

We could do a duet, Arch. :violin::violin: But I would have to ban myself

My allergies started this week too. Never was bothered until the last 2-3 years. Lasts longer than 2 weeks here and grass is still brown.

I think it is pretty much all year here lol! But once i get the chest congestion, sinus infection/ crud it seems to take that long to get rid of it. I took 10 days worth of steroids and antibiotics. It finally rained too, which helps!

I’ve heard that if you eat a spoonful or two of local honey that that helps with allergies..

Geez...Sounds like this time of year you may want to get a mask to fight the pollen off.
