Thanks guys, very happy with things so far. I am planning on trying to get the cam and head on this afternoon. Right now I am waiting on dowel pins that go in the block to locate the head. The machine shop apparently forgot to put them in, no biggie.

I called the parts store last night and told them I needed dowel pins for a small block chevy (as most GM stuff, same as SBC, figured that was easier than telling them an inline 6).......love parts stores these days......"yes but i have to know what the car and year is......."............"pick one between 1955 and oh say 1990, they are all the same...." finally I just made up 74 chevy 1/2 ton. "Oh yeah we have them in stock." Head up there today, "these are head bolts.......no pins" "well that is what you wanted....... "..........finally after 20 minutes and some coaching he found them on the computer. I am guessing he is the guy driving the Honda with the whale tale and the way out of camber front end because it is so low, setting behind the store. What happened to the guy who would chew on a cigar and looked like he spent 30 years in the engine room of a destroyer in the Navy? Modern retail is great, but I think we should stay old school on the parts stores lol! I do have to say the guy was nice enough, but I don't think he has ever seen a V8.

Hopefully we have dowel pins at 1 and a long block by the end of the day. I think I have enough DuPont etching primer for the engine.....planning on trying out summit racings single stage urethane for the paint. I thought about eastwood, but summit is spot on when it comes to shipping, usually 2 days. I probably just cursed myself lol!

The old guy behind the parts counter would have reached under it and pulled out the paint you need. I remember when the counter had about 8 feet of well worn parts catalogs. The only good thing today is you can have most parts from the warehouse by afternoon. It took a lot longer in the old days.

What about the dowels in the old block?

You are correct GA. They don't have the Sierra catalog in the computer......total panic when I go in and try to order Sierra stuff lol. I have actually just resorted to telling them to give me the catalog and wait on other folks while I find the parts number. The catalog is actually pretty goofy the way it is laid out, but I have looked at it enough that it I understand it.

The old guy would have walked into the back, came back 30 seconds later and handed me the dowel pins and said don't worry about it when I tried to pay. You are right on the warehouse thing however.

I do have the ones in the old block and thought about that, however I am not sure how round they would be once I extracted them with the Vicegrip and pry bar method. Figured it was worth the wait. If we don't get the dowel pins on this round I may resort to cutting my own out of some 1/4" rod or whatever lol. It is times like this when i wish I had a lathe and mill!

It's pretty bad when you go in for new air for your tires and they ask for year, make and model plus the engine.

If you're sitting around waiting for the store to call, try pulling a dowel out. I would use a pair of dykes and something for leverage under the dykes. It's been a while, but I don't remember them being hard to pull undamaged.

Hope everyone had a great Sunday! The boys finally figured out what a dowel pin was GA. I backed off the main bolts....remember that stud that was a PITA? Yep guess who put it in the wrong place....lol! But no biggie, just backed everything off and and swapped it out. Cranked things down and installed the oil pump and pick up. I put the head on and realized I needed a 3/8 hex X 1/2" drive socket to get things torqued down. I don't have one. I thought about dropping by HD to pick one up but that place looked like it was black Friday.......think I will wait....But I am very happy, hitting Ace tomorrow to pick up some odds and ends and hopefully putting the new inline back in Fuggly this weekend...i would say 165 but I think we are going to have a lot more!

I'm like Arch!

I need to bleed the brakes on my bike and couldn't find my One Man Brake Bleeder. It's in a box somewhere, probably with Arch's missing Plastigage.

Anyway, went to my local Autozone and couldn't find one, so I asked the counter guy (the one without a cigar stub) where it would be. A what, he says? One Man Brake Bleeder, I say. He fiddles with a computer a bit and asks what is it? I explained and he went in the back somewhere and came out and looked over by the oil wall. I kept looking and he did whatever.

I found it, or rather a spot where it should be. The shelf tag said " OEM One Man Brake Bleeder" and he couldn't find it the system. AZ bugs me that they only have one of most tools. Anyway he said oh, that will be on the truck tomorrow. OK, I'll be back. It wasn't. Got it at another AZ after checking online and it still isn't in stock at the closest store.

I didn't have heart to ask about Chevy 250 six head locating dowels.

Lol you have to love parts stores!

I have had yard chores the last few nights since the weather was good. I am hoping to get the lifter, pushrods and rockers on tonight, then lash the valves. I have a few other odds and ends to do, then prep for paint, which actually arrived today! I ordered it from Summit, it is there house brand automotive urethane. The price wasn't bad, I will be interested to see how it does. I just hope I have enough two part etching primer, I think I do. I also ordered NOS upper and lower thermostat housings. Figured the old ones were rusty and scale, why put them on a nice clean engine? The lower one is here, which is the bigger of the two.

For some reason the USPS decided that there wasn't a secure place to put the upper housing....even though they put the lower one in my mail box. Go figure, I signed the thing the left in the mail box, hopefully they leave it today, but who knows it maybe at the post office. Everyone just throws boxes over my gate, not sure why the decided to break the trend lol! I just hope I don't have to go to the post office......:suspicious: time seems to stand still when you are there standing in line hoping they will say "next"........

Well guess what genius remembered that you have to use thread sealant, not thread lubricant on the head bolts?:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: I knew that, don't ask me........I knew that! But the bolts go into the water jackets, therefore the threads have to be sealed. I picked up a head gasket, took the head off, painstakingly cleaned all the threads up and holes in the head, then reassembled correctly. Well at least I didn't have the valve train in yet. This is like the 3 stooges engine rebuild lol! I should be done with work at noon tomorrow, so I am hoping to get an early start on the engine tomorrow. Upper thermostat housing is still AWOL, may have to try to track that down at the post office tomorrow also.

I have been thinking about two things in between working on the engine.

  1. I was thinking about building a usb charger in the glove box, have any of you added that? Seems like a good place to keep the phone and charge it
  2. Where to put a radio. I am pretty sure I will end up with one that is like a box, with a wired remote on the dash. Or one that is designed to fit in a gauge hole, maybe mounted just under the dash? The dash is full and I really don't want to start putting holes in the passenger side dash. Really there isn't any room there after the glove box. One of my friends has a Fusion Black Box which is real cool, but at almost $500 it should be! It is pretty slick, the box mounts where ever and it has a wired remote that is nice. But really it does way more than I need, most of which is interfacing with electronics I don't have! They do have one that is pretty reasonable, all in one unit for personal water craft, but I don't think its XM compatible. Anyone have any suggestions, looking for AM FM (not sure why I care about AM lol), Bluetooth and XM capable.

Do the Sooners broadcast on AM or FM ? That would be the only reason to have AM ..:D

The sure way to find any missing tool, is to buy a replacement. Works every time...

Actually both Sam lol!

Thanks for the links Kcassells! I really listen to xm most of the time and don't have any music loaded on my phone....guess I need to get with the times lol! I do stream Pandora, which I can do from my phone....but cell coverage at the lake is....um spotty. Guess I need to get hip and down load some tunes !

That is for sure GM, or a part for that mater!

Finally got done with work, need to run up to the office, check the mail and then I can get some engine work done!

I am thinking 8 track!

No I am just running without it at this point. I got the oil pan and timing cover on permanent. That was a chore, the both bolt together. Trying to get silicone on the joints between gaskets, all 5 gaskets on both lined up and all 30 or so bolts in was a bit of a fire drill. But I feel pretty good about how it went together and looks. Crossing my fingers for no leaks on the bottom end! I am trying to decided if I should go for paint on the block or try to get the valve train together. I really need the harmonic balanacer on for the valve train.....just as a check on TDC.....but I need it off to paint the front of the timing cover. I guess we will see what I do lol!
