Update on the upper thermostat housing, it will be here tomorrow 30 minutes after I clean out the paint gun.....ask me how I know lol!

I went with the lets get it painted option. I have a window tomorrow, the rest of the weekend the weather doesn't look all that great. The side covers and valve cover are just on temp with no gaskets, everything else is bolted down. I need to prep the manifold and some odds and ends parts tomorrow, then paint!

Hopefully I can get paint on by around lunch time or so. There are a couple of projects in the boat I can be working on while the paint hardens up tomorrow. Then the valve train install and buttoning things up on Sunday. Hopefully we will have an engine install on Monday.

One other note, Felpro included all of the Mercruiser specific gaskets in the kit. Had to give them credit for that!

I think I have some 8 track albums cached away somewhere. Everything old is new again. LOL

The Hunk-O-Iron is starting to look like it will move Fugly - With authority even!

I actually have some and a player.....assuming it still works which is doubtful! By the way if anyone spots the plasti-guage let me know, I think the upper alternator bracket is hanging out with it..... engine parts these days..really!

It's right there. Don't see the alt. bracket. It's probably with my One Man Bleeder that I no longer need since I got the new one.

Found the alternator bracket, it was bolted to the intake......just like when I bolted it there last week......

Variprime, by Dupont. If you want something that will tenaciously stick to aluminum or stainless, this is it. Also works well on steel with slight rust, it is an acid base. Actually did a good job etching the inside of my cheapo touch up gun. Need to buy a good one some day. I almost bought a DeVelibliss a few months ago. Anyhow paint next.

It is very transparent by the way if you are wondering why it is splotchy.

The new offending part is still AWOL thanks to the USPS. They picked up the "just leave it at the gate" release slip yesterday........still no part today. With my luck they will ship it back to the seller!

I had a similar thing happen with a USPS delivery that needed a sig. I did the re-delivery thing twice with no luck. So I took the third slip to the PO and asked why it wasn't delivered so I could sign it? Every time the mail showed up I was home, but never got a knock on the door. It turned out the mail person is afraid of cats and she wouldn't get out of the truck if she saw a cat. I have no cats, but some strays hang around.

I had to arrange for her to blow the horn if the cats kept her in the truck. Thankfully the piece wasn't time sensitive.

Next time we see the motor, she'll be gleaming Phantom Black! Except for one offender.

I pulled the tape and as tempting as it was I decided to wait till tomorrow to start fiddling with final assembly. I will say the summit paint is really good for something like this. It does however leave a bit to be desired for flow out...but it does have a really heavy build which is great for this! I didn't get much done on the boat today, but that is all non critical anyhow. I am going to let the paint fire off tonight and start final assembly tomorrow.

Nice very nice. I can smell the fresh paint here. I have to admit, I never ever heard of a postal person being afraid of CATS. That's a new one to me, and I had to laugh.

Arch, I did buy a complete DeVilbiss kit with two guns many years ago now. And it even came with extra size tips as well. I actually used it yesterday to finish spraying my gas tank...again. I don't mind spraying most any colors, but I hate spraying clear coats. If you are not totally covered and wearing a good respirator and googles, you get covered with very sticky clear coat. I also have other guns that I purchased over the years, but I am now used to the DeVilbiss guns.

Looks like your primer is part chromate. At least it has that similar color. It looks very good. And how can anyone not like gloss BLACK on an engine. :thumb::thumb:

GM I have used DeVilbiss guns for 30 years or so, very nice guns. I will say the Sharpe's were better at metallics back in the day, but overall the DeVilbiss are great guns.

The paint was still a bit green this morning so I started looking into the motor mounts. looks like I am missing a few parts for the front one. I got a kit for the back but just ordered the motor mount for the front. Looks like I am missing a tapered shim and some fiber washers for the front one. So I am planning on ordering the missing parts in the AM once I tear down the old mounts..... the parts diagram isn't that clear and the service manual doesn't cover it. So I figure it is easiest to just break it down first so I understand the assembly.

I am missing a pipe plug for the head, guessing it was for the heater in cars, so need to pick that up tomorrow along with the water pump pulley bolts.

The valve cover gasket kept fighting me so I finally glued it down with permatex aviation gasket sealer. I am letting that dry over night, should be an easy install in the AM. I do think sanding down the fins on the side and valve cover turned out nice. Also got the rockers installed and lashed.

I was going to ask about the valve cover and side cover fins.

As the French say - Looks preety friquen nice! :D

Maybe the photo angle, but the flange for the circulating pump looks out of alignment to the balancer. Another pulley to go on the balancer?

GA the pulley that goes on the water pump is really deep and the groove is back towards the block. I think it lines up with the front groove in the harmonic balancer, but not totally sure on that.

AWOL part showed up today now that I am done painting lol! And it is slightly different, I am thinking it is a newer style. Naturally it uses different bolts. I did get some more work done yesterday.

I went to install the oil sending unit and discovered that the machine shop guys put a plug in that hole......apparently with Locktite :grumpy:

And it is a slot head in the plug, I cranked on it as hard as I dared. So I have been trying to figure out a way to get the plug heated up without burning the paint on the block. I have a couple ideas but I am open to suggestions.

I also had to order the missing plug in the head from McMaster Carr.

I have been pondering the engine mounts. I tried taking one out with a drift and a hammer yesterday but it didn't budge. I thought about putting it on the press, but I would almost need to fabricate something to support the housing. After reading about someone else replacing them I am thinking about running with the ones in there and just replacing the missing fiber washers. The bushing part that presses in actually looks fine. I just thought i would replace them while I had it out. Any thoughts?

I am pretty close to pulling it off the stand, and bolting on the flywheel. I just need to resovle the oil plug and decide what to do with the engine mount bushings.

Arch - On the oil sender, do you have an impact driver and a BFH? That may work.

On the rear motor mounts - A large socket, a smaller socket than the mount hole, a piece of all thread or long bolt and a couple of nuts with washers. Use the smaller socket to press the bushing into the larger socket. Reverse it install the new ones. I saw that on Red Green, 'cept he used duct tape, of course - And a couple of posts in the M/C forum.

What else? Where are the decals to finish the job? :D
