I am rebuilding the transom on my aluminum boat. I'd like to install a power trim but not sure what I should be looking for?

What considerations should I take into account in order to buy and install a power trim?

Are there specific power trims that mate best with late 79 Johnson ob?

Been looking around. It seems the PT-130 is for OB smaller than 130 HP. Has anyone installed the CMC PT-130 with a late 70's Johnson ob? It looks like I need a transom adapter for a clamp motor.

That would work fine, no, you don't have a clamp motor.

Why is your whale tail on backwards?

It's not really on. At this stage it's just resting there. I don't think I am going to use it when the ob is installed. Never used one in the past.

Ok. So I don't need the adapter kit. Since the transom skin and core have been replaced l need to drill new holes. Sounds like installing the power trim is rather straight forward? Would the power trim mounting bracket be placed on the skin and holes marked? Then go from there.

Yes, and since it sets your motor back a few inches, you can probably raise your motor for better sandbar and stump clearance.

Look thru Jas' SN thread, he bought factory E/J T&T off ebay & mounted it to his OB. It is probably fairly year & model specific of what will fit & what won't, but there should be a range of yrs & models that would work. May or may not be able to find 1 to fit your late 70's 70hp Johnson.

Start by adding the model & ser# of your motor to this thread. I won't be of any more help w/ that info, but there are guys who can....

my 84 rude 70hp use to be the old hand tilt type then i got hold of a used 87 tilt and trim unit of a 120hp. the original is held on with the same 6 bolts and a pin the only extra steps was removing some of the old springs etc that was used for the reverse/lock. if possible you realy need the relay box for the tilt and trim but you could make your own if you have to. i spent $200 for the tt plus relay box

Thanks JB. I will get the details from the OB this weekend. I am leaning towards the CMC PT-130. Do you know any information about the CMC power tilt and trims?

Not really but I've never heard of anyone that's using 1 having any problems. Give me a minute, I know I've read an SC thread that installed 1 recently..... Just got to find it...

EDIT:
It may or may not have been Huron Angler's thread I was thinking of, but he has a 16' SC w/ a CMC T&T installed. Long thread, great read & lots of good info. CMC stuff is in there....

There are 5 similar threads listed at the bottom of your thread, probably find good info in those too:

And google can be helpful

Not sure why the BasPr link was to a PT135, but there were good thinks said about CMC T&T for larger motors at the BP site

Looking to buy a CMC PT 130. Does anyone have leads? Is there a better place to post classifieds at iboats?

Re: Power Trim for Johnson 70 HP

why not just get a proper power trim thats all in one unit ?

you can get a secondhand trim unit froma later engine that will just bolt on.

you need the transom bracket and trim from anything using the fasttract system from 60hp to 225 hp.
the saddle will be good as well if from a 60-70hp from about 1992 to 2002.
its not a hard job and youl have everything you want.

loads on ebay going cheap.
was one on ebay uk this week went for ?47 thats about $70.

there is plenty of them around and they are easy to fit and easy for parts/spares.

also a suzuki 65hp trim unit can be made to fit !!!! just need to trim a touch of the brack once fitted, very easy
and a pair of transom wedges and your away.

But if your not gonna use it a lot, then its not worth the agro.
ive had both with and without, nice to have it, but its not essential to be honest.

it dont have to be omc trim, anything can be converted with a bit of thought.
and if you get a trim ram electric of hydraulic, you can make your own like a cmc unit easy.
