Re: pic of work so far

HI all ,

Well got about 7 hours on her today !! Man it took forever sanding just the transom !! Got just about 4 hours on that alone !! then moved on to the starboard side !! got that done !! so just the port side and the bottom !! then marine tex and sand the HOLE thing again !!

I didnt get to the marine tex anything today !

But when i was grinding on the transom and it didnt sound right in the center !! so i drilled a hole and sure enough there was a spot about one foot square that was just about 10 thousands between the ply wood and the glass !! so i got a srynge and pushed some epoxy in there !! got maybe a pint in it !!

I was also think that i should over drill the other holes, tape them off and fill them with epoxy !! didnt get that far but i am out of work tomorrow at 4 so i will get it then !! that way it will set up by next week !!

I also marine tex [ two weeks ago ] in the drain holes that is in the splash well !! I got it sanding on them also !! needs one more coat in there !! I will get some pics up !! tomorrow !!

Ok guys , still looking for a answer on the primer before the paint ??? do i need it ?? anyone ??? John

Bare fiberglass should get primer, gel coat, I'm not sure. Here's my thought on it. Primer is used to create a bond between two dissimilar products. Paint has bonding agents built into it, but they are not as aggressive as the bonding agents in primers.

So, if you don't mind doing an initial coat with primer just to make sure the paint bonds, it isn't going to hurt anything.

If you are sure that every single sq. in. of the boat has been scuffed and wiped clean with acetone, leaving no trace of any wax or residue that could cause bad paint adhesion, then just paint the boat with the colors you are going to use.

Its really kind of a shame cause the white is turning out really great just the way it is , if it just didnt have the spiders in it where i had to marine tex it !! Thanks mike just need some to back me up in my own mind !! hahah you know what i mean !! John

Re: pic of work so far

Hi guys and Gals

Well i wrote rusteloum yesterday looking for a clear coat ,that will work with the top side and my stiscker ?

this is there reply

Hi, I am painting my boat with top side rustoleum , and i was looking for a clear coat top go over a sticker i have ? Thanks John

ANSWER: Hi John-Thank you for contacting Rust-Oleum product support. We do have a clear aerosol coating, we have one in our Stops-Rust and Painter's Touch lines. However both have such a strong solvent content that I cannot recommend it over your sticker, as it may react with your sticker and cause wrinkling or bubbling. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause. If you have any other questions or concerns please contact us again either via email or directly at 1-800-481-4785. Thanks and have a great day!-Amy

So it looks like I am looking for some more paint !! John

Ps looks like I will be using it for the trailor !!

John i use nason 496-00 clear on cars and have painted over many decals with no problems it cost around $100 a gallon with actavaitor it's a 4:1 ratio needs to be sprayed with a paint gun (hvlp perfeibly) the nice thing is it is pretty forgiving and easy to sand and buff after it's dry, if not using automotive paint the surface would need to be sanded with a 320-500 grit paper before the clear is applied to to get it to stick

Re: pic of work so far

I use the same nason clear from the gallon can. I painted two windshield frames and my outboard motor with rustoleum from the spray can, then after letting that dry for about 1 full day, I sprayed it with two coats of the clearcoat and it works well.

If you use the rustoleum from the quart can or other simple oil based paints, the clear coat will probably cause crazing or lifting in the paint. A real mess, I tried spraying the clear over some valspar tractor paint from tractor supply and I made a real mess. The paint job looked great after just the paint, but when I went over it with the clear, I lifted all over the place.

You must be mistaken!.....we don't sell our coke or steroids across the border, that's illegal! :D:D

I know it's an old post but by now I just can't shut up anymore.
Been watching and reading on yer referbetating job, I missed the thread somehow, but been reading it since about 5 yesterday......all I can say is....
COOL! man, making a poor old Tron look good again, perfect!

I'll go back to reading the rest now, but wanna say I like what you are doing.
Gonna try to get buddy's four banger trihull-Tron with a 140 mercrsr in it. My turn will come after I PLAY with my own oldie FIRST in the summer, gotta watch the coin, as I was laid off and have to suffer through all of the shrinking pockets at the moment.
But, carry on lad, as you were!
I'm watching ya from across the river! (40* off North, 300 S/Miles, NNE.) I Can see the dust flyin, or is it snow?

Re: pic of work so far

Actually, I was doing my bedroom. It's all done for all intents and purposes, the bathroom aspect of it is next, but that is on indefinite hold until funds reappear for it. I have to cut concrete and have a plumber in to do the "rough in" as I do not trust myself with such a critical aspect of home construction. I'll happily repair the concrete, that's the easy part.

Right now, I'm working on getting the house back to normal. I'm so frickin' lazy....my Christmas tree is still up! My ability to self motivate is set to about "2" on a scale of 10.

LOL.
WoW a "2"?
Wish I could get up that high!
I am sulking over the layoff, (good enough excuse.)
Working on the house is what's eating into the boat funds,......I'll have to sell the house I guess!:D
I did sneak the outdrive into the spare bedroom though heh heh heh.

Re: pic of work so far

There, just got it read!....,
The whole dang thang.

Lotsa good stuff there, taking notes. :D
Cool man, that boat is going to be an heirloom, passed on, and on and on. lol
It'll never wear out, and some guy is gonna buy that in a couple hundred years and think that everything from this age was made sturdy like this.

Hey... I figured you live near Flint and I Googled the Reservoir up there at Columbiaville, That where you pull yer fish out of?, you launch at the three ramps? Just curious, I come through those places every once and a while and I pass your work area all the time on I69 seeing as I cross into MI via Pt. Huron a lot of the time.
If I ever get the chance I'll come get some of that venison, and see if those non peninsula deer taste any different LOL.

I hope you "git'r done" for the Spring John and I like the paint you are planning!! About time you get to have some paybacks out of it.
That's gonna be a hell of a nice looking boat, well worth the effort.

Re: pic of work so far

Cool man and thanks for the ok to visit, hey....you never know!

Bet you're just sitting on ants right? lol, took a bit to read all the freakin pages but it was pretty cool, and who cares about padding the threads? You can only go sofar and then you're stuck for answers anyhow! (no offence meant.)
I am getting lots of fiberglass and paint hints sofar, and that's what counts.

Have not done a glass one myself yet, but I'll get there.
I was a Teak, Oak, Mahogany and Tinny kinda guy.
Just a Tinny and Glass one now I guess.

Gonna do the glass Citation cuddy myself in a while, if its worth doing.
Don't want to find out 'til things unscramble here.
I'll work on the tinny when IT gets here, while I use the fiberglass cuddy to fish and camp out in.

Brought the leg in off the cuddy so I got some work I can keep busy with, doing a house refurb too, and lots of time to do it right is a good thing, so I am not complaining.
I can stand a break after 40 years with hardly any holidays or vacations! A lotta 3-4 day breaks, but not being able to plan anything for fear of losing a good trip stinks at the best of times, you know how that goes! (pays off in the end though!)

I am in a retiring mood but still have to relent on that for a bit, I need to get some more stashcash laid away so I can be more comfy after.
I am not old enough anyhow, but only 7 more years after August this year woohoo! By that time we'll have Bionic Salmon, Nuclear Pike and Walleyed Musky lurking in the lakes! LOL.

Yer doing a heck of a job there man, lots of respect for that go go attitude of yours.

Well...gotta go (just saying that to be polite, give your ears a break!), take care and best wishes.

Oh yeah...you should get the wife to train you just the way you want her!
Hard to do but it may get you some more fish/refurb time haha, see ya,
