Ugh! I hear ya on the heat. The great news of the heat is I am finally losing this hard (or is it all-too-easily?) earned gut of mine. Lost a belt hole in the past month alone! :D I just assume the massive amount of sweat drips in the poly won't adverely affect anything, because stopping it just isn't going to happen.

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Well, there goes a gallon of resin! :D I'll take some pictures in a bit and post them, but for now I'm taking a break. If I were a younger man, I'd consider doing this for a living...the challenge is nice, but then again, I don't need to get into yet another job that ruins my clothes and my health....hardwood floors have done enough of that over the last decade plus.

I managed to get biax on both sides of the two stringers and had enough resin left over to put a strip across the top of my transom to fill in some more thickness and add some strength for the upper bolts.

The only area I had issue with was the front of the stringers where they tapered. I should have cut the glass a little tighter to form, but I'll just trim off the excess with a knife while the glass is still "green"....that is one of the beauties of fiberglass.

I discovered though that I am allergic to some degree to fiberglassing as I woke up with a rash on my left forearm. Wasn't from resin or catalyst, the only thing I used was acetone and I haven't had a problem with acetone in the past...so it may have been some dust from grinding that the suit didn't protect my arm from..who knows.

At any rate, I'm yet one more step closer!

i didn't grind all the old string out , left the tabbing at the bottom and tied into it ,seemed stronger and easier

I had considered that originally, but after I started grinding the old ones out and saw how badly voided the glass was, I decided it was in my best interest to just take them out completely. It sat for 2 years with remnants of the stringers in there before I finally pulled the trigger though...

Looks good there Mike , Shes one step closer !!! And if you are allergic to glass then you can always move up to carbon fiber or the big guns Kevlar!!! LOL John

Is that 2 layers or one? On each string. Man, it looks great, good work, trust me I know how hard it is, I bet you were sweatin like a pig on a spit!

each side of each stringer has one layer of 1708 biax and it's capped off with one layer of CSM. To be honest, I don't think I can see a reason to use more fiberglass. Just putting those one stiffened up the stringers so much , I can't move them an inch! My glass guy said one run on each side would be more than enough, and he was right! I'm not going to over engineer the stringers since once I get the center in and done, glue the deck to the stringers and glass the deck pieces together, tab the sides with CSM or 1708 and then glass the whole deck, it'll be the whole of it that will be extremely strong, particularly with the base hull design the way that it is.

Though, I can't rule out the possibility of running large swaths of glass in between the center and outer stringers and up the sides of them...I still have to add knees to the transom.

One thing that I need to do first and foremost though is get the cap ready for the transom...I need to test fit the cap to make sure I'll get the clearance I need. I measured a little today and am concerned I may be a tad thick in that department and may have to be a little creative...I might just take a stab at this later this week if I don't decide to tackle that center stringer. ( I kinda busted a little bit of the budget by purchasing a 60 gig XBox 360 tonight :D )

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Heh, that's what I was thinking...65 inch HDTV in the basement...I'll be casting well into the night! :p

Since I have most of the supplies for the boat anyway for this years work, I figured I could splurge a little on something I've been wanting to get ( actually obsessing over for the last 3 months ).

I'm going to get my drain holes for the two stringers re cut and then glassed so I can get rain on my boat off my shoulders, test fit the cap again and then I'm going to go to town on the center stringer and the deck.

The deck is what may end up costing me the $$ though...I'm getting kinda hooked on the idea of that 9 layer baltic birch I saw...beautiful plywood and helluva lot stronger than the 5 ply I was checking out....3 sheets of it are going to be what kicks me in the wallet though at almost $40+/sheet.

Drain hole day!

Drain hole day!

100_2112.jpg

What happened to the drain holes I had in there! Oh yeah, I fiberglassed over them!
100_2118.jpg

What could I possibly be doing with balloons?
100_2123.jpg

It's pretty, but what is it?
100_2124.jpg

It's a fiberglass burrito! The thought process was, wet out the glass, wrap it around the balloon, stick it in the hole and then blow up the balloon to force the glass into the shape of the hole, the balloon will expand on either side and help to "flare" the biax around the hole and I'd have a superior drain hole that should never rot, break or puncture, plus not diminish the strength of the stringer and be big enough for any debris that might want to flow through it.

Enter the Makita backed Forstner bit in 1" hole size!

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

So, I wetted out the glass, wrapped the balloon around it and couldn't take any pictures because I was trying to work as fast as I could and had really sticky fingers and I'm not going to gum up the camera for a picture you guys can envision mentally ;) But, the end result was awesome!
100_2120.jpg

I wetted out some CSM to help hold the flared ends and make sure the fiberglass "tube" didn't pop out down the road. The balloons broke and I tried to put new ones in to hold it, but they popped also, so I have to be happy with the way this turned out, which I am.

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

BTW, water should drain out of them really well since the water that gets into the hull should drain from them once the hull is level, I'm not too worried about them being forward of the transom as far as they are...I just couldn't get the drill in there low enough and close enough to get it closer to the transom, and I really didn't want to sacrifice too much strength by the transom anyway.

The way I see it, water shouldn't get there in the first place, and if it does, this time it has a place to go.

Dang that looks really good, I have been thinking about our tri-hull side water holes (posted pics on my thread) haha. I'm trying to figure out how to make spray foam mold or pink sheet and form it then I can remove and then glass, so it doesn't soak up water. This is the only part of the boat I'm really stumped on.

Otherwise, looks like your coming along nicely can't wait to see more.

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

I think if you foam the area where the water collects normally, and then glass it in, you are essentially making a composite sandwich, just with lots of PB&J in the middle :p The deck will go over it and you won't have to worry about it being damaged, the deck will support the weight above it. I think they would have done this at the factory if it were cost effective, but it adds weight to the hull and time for the labor to build the boat. We get to do it right this time around if we choose to do so.

Yeah, ok I think that's the route I'm gonna go, I was just worried the spray in foam or expanding foam would soak up water. There's really no way of making drainage.

Wrap the balloons in saran wrap first. The glass mat shouldnt puncture them that way.

Nice work on the drain holes. I went the same route. Even used the same forstner bit :). I can't recall where on here I saw a conversation about those bits, but I had somehow never heard of them before (or at least didn't know what they were when i saw them). I bought a set the next day! What a great set of bits. I use them before I reach for a normal bit, now.

On a side note, I somehow forgot you can subscribe to threads on here. I've been manually checking this thread for updates every day. I think the heat is getting me
