You think I will need any thing else to get this thing to the phase of testing her in the water? I'm wondering if I got the correct parts, like is the bracket next to the impeller all I need to hook those steering cables up to? The one that is on the mercury was pretty close to that even though I haven't figured out how to take them off the merkery plate yet. I didn't see any springs or anything to where I can get enough tension off of them to un hook it. I haven't been able to find what kind of cables I need do any of you guys have any idea? Would these work? Or rather the correct length pluses these fittings? I still need to measure how long of cables I need.

I think I posted the same thing twice, since I have the old cables and the plastic eye could I take it off and put it on something like this?

Water skiing was a blast! Nobody around here does that anymore. I'm shopping for skis right now so I can teach my grandkids! I bet we'll impress them when they see their Pops and their dads show them our tricks! But maybe this 63 year old guy better take it easy. I can remember the "morning after" some of my first days on Skis. I ached in muscles I never knew existed!
I think I found a video of you and some gals from back in the day looks like I got alot of catching up to do!

???----Explain ---" bracket next to the impeller "
In the pics I posted about 5 posts back of the parts I ordered. It's the bracket the steering clips to I think or it's atleast what I think is the part that mounts to the motor.

Some folks use " clothes line " on them .----I looks the same but is NOT the same.----Use tiller cable from your local boat shop.-----They are ok for up to 40 HP or so.
In 74, I did the Clothesline thing on my dads boat. It lasted about 10 hrs and the Wires Broke, and the Plastic Stretched about 8 inches. Could have been a real Catastrophe. Got the proper Stuff and installed it.

Can you screw figure 3 and 3a off and attach them to the cables that don't have that hardware? Or should I order the other type?

This was how it was done on the Cables that would have been used way back when. I think the Newer Cables are preassembled and really can't be tinkered with.

I had found these and was wondering if they would work but went with a different American brand.

Hey guys, I got all my parts in and may have bought the wrong cables, the add said it was the same as a type 400. Anyone know if they are right? I tried hooking them up to the mercontroler but can't get the thing back together. I just ordered an evenrude simplex, would these cables fit it? I think the brass rod on the cable I bought are to long for the mercontroller but maybe I'm just doing it wrong. If it is the wrong cables is there any way to make it fit either one ( simplex or mercontroller?

Simplex was for Evinrude, Johnson, and Gale Motors, Cables that fit in it will work with your motor.
As for a MerControl, well it is for Mercury Motors.

Cool outboard video, I can remember those very well. My dad had a 16' Lyman and we pulled two skiers with no problem....in all honesty, the ski's were much wider back then, far easier to ski at slower speeds..

Well I ended up finding a different simplex with no cables. Do you know if the cables that have the brass rod with an eye at the end will fit on it? I know the cables back then were just a cable I believe and then you had to buy the assembly for what ever boat engin and controller. Or maybe I'm remembering wrong.
