don't waste time man, it is dangerious boat to be on if fix by a newbie. JMHO
Ok. What he said? What did he say? Hmm...

Feel free to ask away! I'm in town for now- Will be for probably the next few weeks, then it looks like I'll be heading out to sea for a while, probably middle of april or so. When I DO leave it'll be for at least 60 days or so- I've got to go drive my big boat for a while ;)

Can you take some pics standing at the bow looking aft and vise versa.... pics of the cap too...

Try to sit the keel stringer where it went.....it's a starting point. Can you see where the original stringers and bulkheads were? A line on the gunwale where the deck was attached? Anything you find like that will help put the puzzle back together.

I will get the pics some time this week , I can see where something was glued down on the hull seemed like hull stiffners not sure on those yet, on the deck is it just going to sit on the sides of the boat

Sorry, my English isn't good.
I saw the pictures he posted, there was a crack under the boat seem like a big one too. It is a hard job for a newbie to fix. My friend had his boat sank by doing a bad job.

Sorry to hear that, but that's exactly why we use iBoats. If for no other reason to prevent bad repair & catastrophic failures.

Hope they all made it out safe & spent very little time in the water.

Lucky for them the water is about 5 feet deep. They did spend a night walking to find a phone to call for help. It happened many years ago, I can still find the news on the web.....happened in 1999 http://cjonline.com/stories/052299/kan_ksbriefs.shtml

Re: New Boat New Problems

Hey everyone, sorry its been a while for no pic updates I havent had a chance to get any pictures. But for an update I am in the process of finding some lumber to make stringers and transom ive called a few lumber yards, but no call back from them for some pressure treated wood, and on the crack I cleaned up the area around it . Any one know how thick of wood to use for the deck?

Some use 1/2" others use 3/4". 5/8" seems like a good compromise.

This leads me to believe you are still getting ahead of the place you need to be before starting the final cleanup & prep of the hull for glass & stringer work.

In many many different places you can find the deck thickness question answered. But Ez has supplied a good recommendation.

There is little need or want for pressure treated lumber. It will be:

  • more expensive
  • harder to find in multiple thicknesses: 3/4" for transom wood @ 2 layers & stringers, 1/2", 5/8", or 3/4" for deck/sole,
  • harder get multiple sheets that are generally flat
  • harder to keep mostly flat (as it dries it will go potato chip on you: bow & twist [potato chip like]
  • much heavier initially (and still heavy compared to other better alternatives once dried)
  • takes forever to dry (or at least as dry as you'll ever be able to get it w/ out a lumber kiln)
  • once you cut it, w/out treating the end grain w/ a similar preservative you've given away most of the protection the pressure treating gave you. The end grain is the usual area water is wicked into the plywood, and once cut it's exposed & untreated. You may wrap that edges w/ CSM & resin to re-seal it, but you'd do that w/ other choices of wood too.

Most of the above is also covered in many different places & threads, but here is a list of good places to start:

oops' hull extension thread, he has a handy index on page1

Don S' sticky: "Helpful Tips", at the top of the Restoration forum

Find any of WOG's posts & go thru the 'deck, stringer, transom' link in his signature line

Hard to access the prep of the cracked area w/out pix.

Re: New Boat New Problems

I agree with JBC ^^^ you do not want to use PT plywood. The Arauco Plywood from Lowe's or HD is what I'd recommend. 3/4" for the Stringers. Double lam for the Transom. I'd use 1/2" for your deck on that small bass boat. Drawings in the first link of my signature below will describe how to do everything.

Re: New Boat New Problems

Well i have about 2 more weeks left of school and ill actually be able to work on the boat for longer than a 2 hours or so and thanks alot for the tips on the thickness on the stringers and deck and transom. I took a trip to lowes last night just to see what types of plywood they had only thicknesses, I only seen was 1/4 inch and some 3/4 inch but they were smaller peices. Not sure if they just didnt put some out or what, but ill check back with them tonight or tom night and possibly pick some up

The Hixson lowes seems to run out of the stuff from time to time... But they do have it- I buy it there frequently. What you're looking for is Arauco, It's with the rest of the full sheets of plywood, kind of mixed in a bit so you'll have to look/ask if you don't see it right away. They stock two different thicknesses.
