Re: New Boat New Problems

Not for boats. Bondo products use Talc as their primary filler and it absorbs water over time. Not a good thing for boats. Now if its for minor repairs above the water line and you keep your boat covered all the time then you can prolly get by using it. Most of us on here make our own Tiger Hair by mixing cabosil and strands of CSM and resin. Lots better and cheaper.

Where R U located? A lot of us iBoaters use www.uscomposites.com to order our supplies online. Good prices but shipping can be kinda pricey, depending on your location. There are other suppliers that might be closer to you if I knew where you were located, I could direct you to the closest supplier. USC is in West Palm Beach, Florida. Your glassing supplies will run you approx. 6-8 hundred dollars before you are all done.

hey everyone, any suggestions on how I should measure for the height and length of the stringers? And what I need to do to start rebuilding the transom?

I would take the stringer you have and find how it was set from the factory. Use it as a pattern to make 2 of them, dry fit them in and take 2x4 about as wide as the inside of the boat and lay it across the stringers. You can mark the gunnels as you move the board along the stringers so you'll have reference points where the bottom of you deck will sit,or the height of the stringers. You can also measure down from the 2x4 where ever you need to add stringers.

Transom area can be ground down to good clean glass with a 4 1/2" angle grinder and a 36 grit flapper disc. It would be great to find the factory design for the transom and stringers ;)

Make sure you have the proper safety gear when grinding glass!

Read this http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=286013 for all fiberglass info.

well my problem is I only have one stringer and it is all messed up so I really dont have anything to go buy and I cant seem to find anything from the factory about the stringers and on the height of the stringers should they be low enough so when I put the deck on the stringers so it sits flat with the sides of the boat where it is flat cause the one stringer i do have seems to be really high

This is one of the many reasons this is going to be a tough rebuild. Photos & measurements during dis-assembly are extremely important.

PM CadWelder & see if he came up w/ some info & esp a stringer layout like he offered. Find somewhere to get an overhead view of your boat in un-demo'd condition. Previous owner, factory brochure, something.

Here is a pix of your hull w/ some Q's:
Bassboat.jpg

Since there are so few pix, it's going to be a challenge to get good advice. And spend some time reading through the thread in oops signature. And there are lots of threads w/ tons of info. Go through a bunch, and when you think you've read a bunch, find & read that many new ones & read through them.

It sounds like you've got some info & have read some, but not yet enough. This is not as simple as cut 2 6 inch tall, 12 foot long stringers & glue them down.

Oh and you'll never get any complaints that the pix are too big or there are too many.

JB is right on the money! I must have read threads for a month before I even thought about doing anything.

Re: New Boat New Problems

There isn't anywhere around here to get resins or fillers economically, I get all mine from US Composites... Too bad I just ordered from them, We could have split the shipping charges!

I'd be happy to give you a hand measuring things- Hopefully there is enough intact to measure FROM! It is a LOT easier to cut your stringers if you have something to go by, like the old stringers, but it can be done.

You are going to need plywood, resin, filer, and cloth for the transom. Exactly what kind of materials you need will vary a bit by your choice of resin. I usually use Epoxy, but for your boat, I'd stick with polyester, it'll save you a LOT of money and work just about as well...

Scan through Andrews threads. You'd gain tons of knowledge, and then take him up on the assistance offer. That'd be unbelievable helpful! Not to mention the aid he'd be repairing the big chine tear out.

Re: New Boat New Problems

hey jb that stringer that is there is backwards I had a chance to talk to the owner that gave me the boat and he said that the part that is cut was towards the back where a peice of plywood went across it and the gas tank was sitting there and about the grinder marks i have no idea they dont look like it but i have no idea what the owner might have done to it. He also gave me a peice of paper that had some measurements on it but i need to get some clarification on it
