Is it ok to put acetone in a plastic bucket to clean the tools in or does it have to be metal?

I stand corrected .... earlier in this thread I had posted that the ribs in the hull were made of wood but I went out today and really checked them and they are not wood but fiberglass.

Does anyone have a source for the vinyl insert for the rub rails?

Ok .... I know that all of you thought that I had gone to sleep over here in Ohio but actually the humidity has been terrible and wasn't able to get anything done but today the humidity dropped and I was able to get the transom sealed up and ready to be installed.
Here it is before:

And after:

I had sealed the transom with a coat of poly resin and after a couple of hours I then applied the csm and resin again for a second coat but I have what appears to be air bubbles as marked with the red arrows in the pics. Do I need to grind them out and re-seal them or are they ok since I am going to cover with 1708 once it is installed?

The one on the flat, grind it out and "TEAR" out a piece of mat about that size. Dab in some resin and then apply the Torn out patch and wet it out. On the edges grind them out and again TEAR pieces of mat so you have stips about 2 inches wide with FUZZY edges. Wet out the edges of the transom with resin and apply the mat pieces and use your hands to mold the mat pieces around the edges and roll em out smooth. Tearing the mat makes it easier to keep air bubbles from forming by makin it more pliable.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

We recently did a transom on an identical boat... looks like you have an MFG Edinboro there. Or at the very lease a Niagara. All glass body and stringers, except for the transom which was steam formed ply with planks. Ours looks like it turned to compost some time around 1982. There is in fact a curve, which we preserved by tracing on to a 2 x 4 which we split down the trace line and used as a clamp at the top of the transom while it cured.

We used two layers of 3/4" 6 layer oak ply. The forward section was almost one continuous piece, the aft layer was made up of about 6 vertical sections which were chamfered at the lower edge to fit in to that tapered pocket. We epoxied as we went, covering each piece in 207 and we hammered the last center section in keystone style. After curing and trimming I'm fairly confident the transom is stronger than the one that was in this boat new.

Now that we got the 50 horse sorted it absolutely flies. This boat is my friend's dad's and he has me looking for two more hulls for each of us!

Hey Andy .... got any pics of the boat? Mine has the ribs which are made of some sort of fiberglass but my stringers are metal. I am sure mine is an MFG Corry Carefree but I am not sure of the year. I made my transom for 4 pieces of 3/8 fir and I had to belt sand the heck out of it to get the shape but it dry fits in nice. I am hoping to get it install one day this week.

Ok ... This may be a dumb question to most of you but being a newbe I have to ask this. How important is it that when replacing the transom it extends all the way to the sides of the hull? When I removed the rotted transom I made the new one exactally the same size as the original. You can see the outline of the old transom in the photo and it is about 3" to 4" away from the sides. Is this going to be a problem?

You don't know how glad I am to hear that ...LOL I can't imagine starting all over again. After the transom is tabbed in and covered with the 1708 I am going to paint the inside including the transom. Do I have to add wax to the resin for the final layer?

Some do, some don't. Personally, if you are Going to Paint it, I would. Then Sand it, Acetone wipe it, Prime it and Paint it.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I have a question about my floor. This pic is the closest I have found to what I think my floor looked like from the factory. I would think that everytime you drop something it would slide under the floor between the ribs. I would like to put a full floor in where it is closed in but I am worried about the weight. It is only a 12' boat so I can't imagine it would take much more wood then the piece that is in there to close it up. But again, I am a newbe and don't know about these things that is why I turn to you experts out there. I have metal stringers and fiberglass ribs so I am not worried about water getting under the floor but I would prefer that it is all closed up. Any thoughts on this?

Ok ... no thoughts on the floor. I have a question for you fiberglass guys out there. When making "Peanut Butter" you add the chopped fiber for strenght and the cabosil to thicken. Is that the only purpose of the cabosil or does it add to the strenght also?

Mostly just thickening, but some strenth.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Well, got the transom in today. Sure would of been nice to have an extra set of hands had to do it myself but seemed to go pretty smooth. I have to thank Woodonglass for all the drawings and expert advise and especially for the drawings of those 2x4 clamps they sure did the job. iboats is such a great site that I would have never dreamed of taking on this job before the hours of reading all those threads and having all of you that were there to answer all of my questions. I don't want to sound like I am done with this project because I have a lot more work to do and will probably have a lot more questions but just wanted to say thanks.

Now, back to business. How long should I leave the clamps on the transom?
