Tacky is fine, you can even do them all at once, just watch the heat build up. But spread in a larger area, helps the heat problem.

Oh by the way.. Woody's Gorrilla glue is fine, my only concern is that if your matting surface (existing boat) isn't really as true as the new wood, there will be gaps that the glue won't fill good. Your choice. By the time you glass the exterior into the hull good, you'll mostly likely be fine either way.

Gorilla glue IS a gap filling glue. That's exactly why I recommended it. It expands and fills to 4 times the volume of itself. It is really great stuff. I use it for exterior stuff all the time with great results. I think it's perfect for this application. And CW is spot on, tacky is all you need.

Sounds good .... thanks Wood. I hope to get it glued in tomorrow morning. I picked up some SS carriage bolts and drilled out the new keel and matched it to the stringer. Everything should be ready to go in the morning.

Dry fit.

Well, no turning back now ... the keel is officially Gorilla Glued in. It went pretty well with no problems and I sure like working with the glue instead of the fumes from the PB. I think the bottle of glue said to leave the clamps on for 1 to 2 hours but I am going to leave them on overnight.

Added plastic tubing to keep the glue off of the bolts.

Had to be creative with the clamping.

I am going to fillet around the keel with PB so the csm and 1708 will lay down nice. Some of the glue expanded out the sides of the keel. I am going to sand it before I fillet. How much of this needs to be sanded out? If there is some of this glue sticking out will it effect the PB and cause a weak spot?

Hey J S
Can't help with the extra glue sticking out. Leave that to the experts here.
I have really enjoyed the thread and pic's. You are doing a great job and getting alot of good help from the guys here.
Looking forward to seeing more of the thread and pic's.
Good luck

Thanks Kent ..... like the title says I thought that I was repairing a transom but it has turned into a bigger project than that ....LOL. This being my first boat I knew nothing but I sure have been given a lot of expert advise from a lot of great people on here. I would never have been able to do it without them.

Today I cleaned out as much of that glue that was sticking out as I can. Did a little sanding and put the fillets on both sides of the keel. In the morning ... a little more sanding and then I will start glassing it in.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

You certainly have in filleted well that's for sure. Like Woody said you need some shaping here, but it's looking okay to me. And the Gorilla glue is okay, I don't mind admitting that I didn't realize it was a gap filling glue. I have used Gorilla glue a few times for splicing stringers, but gaps where not an issue. I generally use Titebond III for splicing stringers so I'm not as "up" on the characterisics of Gorilla.

How about posting a picture of the shaping before you start glassing?

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Thanks Wood ....

Hey Kent .... It has rained here for the last three mornings but was clear by 10 am so I have been lucky.

Sorry CW, but I didn't get any pics after the sanding.

I tried to sand the keel and PB so it was smooth and didn't have any lumps or bumps but I am not sure what I did would be called "shaping". After the sanding I wiped everything down with acetone and it was ready to go. I cut the strips of cloth and had them ready to glass in. Started with one layer of CSM and then a layer of 1708 and ran out of resin. So much for planning ahead ... lol. Each layer took a little less than a quart of resin and I have just under a quart left but each layer is getting wider so I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough so I will have to order some today.

Am I going to have to sand this again before I start the rest of the layers? Do I have to do "shaping" or is it too late?

Here is a pic with the two layers on.

As long as you're using unwaxed resin (which I assume you are) then you're fine between coats.

For the shaping, no it's not too late, just much easier to have a nice shaped surface you're glassing over. Makes finishing the glass much easier and quicker. Now I'm referring to a nice finish ready for painting. But no worries, you're okay.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Thanks CW .... I am using unwaxed resin so does that mean I have to add wax on the final layer since it is below the waterline? I am not going to use gelcoat, just paint.
It is hard to tell from the photo but it seemed to lay down pretty flat and smooth.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

The Laminating resin (unwaxed) remains tacky when cured. Adding wax to the final layer takes away this tackiness. Some people add it some don't. Up to you. Personally I do. As for the shaping it just depends on the final shape you are going for for the keel. If it looks the way you want it to look then glass it up sand her smooth and Paint it.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I think it looks pretty close to what the original shape was. I can't believe it is almost glassed in when only a week ago Woodonglass had to take me out of the panic mode when I saw that rot. Thanks Wood .....LOL.
