Re: "My" run in with the law.

In Minnesota, they had random sobriety check points for awhile. It got to be a real hassle, and were obviously a violation of constitutional rights. It was brought into the courts. The resolution is that they no longer do that. They have to observe some behavior or condition that gives them probable cause to pull you over.

For Ladyfish, there is a difference between civil rights and constitutional rights. For me, also a veteran, constitutional rights are to die for. Civil rights are negotiable. Bubba's original encounter is clearly a violation of constitutional rights.

tx1961whaler, you are right, in that the mail in form makes no mention of it. However, if you go to the actual BMV office, there is another form you have to sign. I've never re-newed by mail, so I don't know if they send the other form with your new registration. When my plates are due this year, I'll try it. If this wording is omitted from the mail in form, maybe that would mean, legally, that those that re-new via the mail-in form would be exempt from the previous consent to search? Doubtful, but maybe....

thats great to hear Martin..here in GA they still have license checks occasionally..it is a way for them to get probable cause and make a bunch of arrest for mostly petty things..I really do not feel that this violation of my constitutional rights is making any measurable difference in my safety and would rather that they stop this type of communist action. I am all for them pulling over someone who is weaving or driving in a dangerous/erratic manner. Or investigating druggies and gangstas and arresting them..I am also for catching criminals and pretty much leaving the average law abiding citizen ALONE...the over abuse of police in our area has lead to a real negative view of law enforcement..and they wonder why no one respects them..many do not deserve it and the ones that do unfortunately get lumped in with the bad....hence the saying "how can you tell a bad cop?? hes the one with a badge"

I had some fun with some city cops several years ago.

Now there's a worthwhile pastime...

This urban legend has been on the Internet for at least 10 years, and was faxed around before that.
I've had numerous people claim that they "knew those involved"....but never known anyone who crossed the reality frontier far enough to try to maintain that they were the "hero" in the story ....

Now they're running the plates on the fly on a computer in the squad car. Talk about distracted driving. I'm just waiting for a fatal accident being caused by one of these cops because of it.

One was cruising the Wal-Mart parking lot and running my plates when I approached him on foot and asked him why. Can't remember the answer, but it wasn't much.

J_Martin, we just installed in one of the sheriff's deptartments ICE vehicles an automated camera system that shoots pictures of tags. The cameras shoot to the front, rear and both sides of the patrol car. The officer can ride through the walmart, the system catches the tags he rides by and the system will run them with out any input from the officer driving. It will shoot on coming cars. If the car doesnt have a tag on the front it will shoot it from the rear as it passes. This is all done in a matter of few seconds. This is mainly to catch those that have warrants on them. In one of our neighboring countys an armed felon was caught by a system like this. He had kidnapped an elderly woman, killed her and was driving her car back to alabama where he had escaped from prison.

I never said I was, nor did I imply I was a "hero". That is your misinterpretation. Maybe at one time it was an urban legend. It was 1985 when I had my encounter. Not sure if the urban legend started prior or after 85. In my case it was an urban fact, not a legend.

Re: "My" run in with the law.

If traffic stops are a good thing why is it that I cringe every time I encounter one? Someone on this forum said we should not associate this with nazi or communism. Why not? When I am stopped for no probable reason I can't help but think how threatened our precious freedoms are. When I am sitting in line at a road check I'm usually thinking of all the of moving traffic violations that I witnessed while driving there! I have reminded the LEO's about this and suggested they do some active patrolling and all I ever get is ?have a good day sir?. So in the end I'm PO'd and the guy that ran the red light got off scot free.

It hit 35? here today. I uncovered the bass boat and admired it for a bit, then dug the charcoal grill out of the woodshed and cooked up some bass fillets from the freezer.

At 35? in Florida, people freeze. In Minnesota people barbecue.

Man oh man I'm pining for summer.

Good lord, I know in the off-season every thread seems to turn into a weather thread but even this one? :p

That's just not right. I'm sure it will get overturned on appeal.

It went all the way to the Ohio supreme court and did not get overturned there... All I can say is I will travel as little as possible in Ohio And Worth county Missouri(not that it will be hard for me to keep out of Worth county Missouri) No offense Bubba.

Re: "My" run in with the law.

DUI checkpoints are, by definition, illegal and unconstitutional. You can't stop someone and check them without due cause, and simply existing on the road isn't good enough. Courts in the past have upheld them, but their constitutionality is coming under fire again, hopefully they'll be banned soon. Innocent until proven guilty is not just a saying, it's the law.

Here in Fl they found a way to side step this matter. They advertise in the paper and internet when and where the checkpoints will be established. Most that get popped in the pokey can't remember what they read.

Easy to avoid, don't drink and drive. We have alot of seniors on drugs and kids on alcohol.
