One other thought about your HD. All of the HD manufacturers have cloning software to copy your HD to the new HD. The software can be found on the manufacturers website if it's not provided with your purchase.

Thanks Decker, I am gonna check into that. I like simple.

Been building PC's for almost 20 yrs. I like SeaGates and I get most of my stuff here...TigerDirect.com - Electronics, Tablets, Phones, Office Supplies & Video Games. I think this is a good deal.
Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s at TigerDirect.com
I'd buy an external case and put this in it...
Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 3TB, SATA III (6Gb/s), 3.5, 7200RPM, 64MB at TigerDirect.com
Installation is basically, UnPlug the old and plug in the new. If it was hard, I couldn't do it!!!!

Wood, thanks for the info. These are the ones I will go with then. You are too humble, does not matter how hard it is; you can do anything!

Today I was a little under the weather. Did not sleep well last night with this sinus infection so I decided to get the house cleaned up from the trip. Actually did filing that I have held off on for a month or more. Feels good to get it done. The weather was not too bad today so tomorrow I should be good to get back at the boat. I am sure with the heater attachment, the temp will not be an issue.

Thanks Guys.

Ok Techies (ie; Wood, Trooper, etc),

Hope everyone had a great holiday with the loved ones. Ours was great and very relaxing. I woke up this morning and saw rain so thought I would tackle the hard drive issues.

Looking for direction again. I got the 2 Seagate internal hard drives (the ones Wood recommended). I thought I would start with the one that will be used as the external hard drive storage for backups. I have it installed in an external enclosure with fan. The HD came with a mini disk but when I try to load it, I get a message that it is for Win 98 only. I am trying to set this up to back up my Win 7 64 bit system. I went to the Seagate page but was not sure which download would work best for what I need.

Seagate 3000GB Barracuda
S/N W1F0LKK1
Model: ST3000DM001

Was hoping you all could tell me which download would be best and how to go about getting it set up. When I hook the unit up and plug into computer I do NOT see it on the list. So I am not sure where to go with it from here.

Next, I want to do a mirror image of the desktop unit onto this external hd, hook up the new internal hd in the desktop and copy it all back over to the new hard drive. I am not sure how to do that either, and I did not get any disks when I purchased the desktop so I need to avoid loosing all the info on the desktop. NEWBIES!

Thanks

If you are using the eSATA port on your motherboard you may need to go into the bios setup and enable the port...

How are you connecting the external HD to the computor. Is it a eSATA or USB port. Only thing I can think of for win 98 would be USB drivers.

Well guys I owe you again. Problem solved. The mini disk was part of the external case. So I went to their page and it had a how to which basically said you have to go in and initialize the HD for the first time. Once I did that it took off on its own. I also go the desktop mirror image done as well as a backup done and created a repair disk. YAH!

As far as the boat goes, not sure if I previously reported that my sister and brother in law came through town a week ago so I took advantage of the extra hands and muscle and got the cap back on the boat, and moved the motor to a smaller (cheaper) storage. What I found was that one part of the transom needs about an inch or so taken off and re-glassed then the cap fits. I might be the only person to have shrunk the beam length. OMG, side tracking here to say I LOVE THE NEW EMOTICONS! Anyhow I guess I kept tightening the straps and my measurements were a bit short when I measured to put the wood braces in cause the cap looks just a tad big. I am not worried, I figure it will settle back out in no time.

I also found a mechanics manual for the 66 Merc 650 4 cyl that I have so I am really pumped. I have been reading all sorts of things. Can't wait to get a garage or workshop that I can work inside. I am a bit down that I am not going to get much done in the next month. With the holidays, travel, and preparing for a move north about all I will get done is repairing the transom, screwing the cap on and winterizing the motor.

Do you guys see any issue with not having the stringers in and towing the boat? If so I am gonna have to do that in January. I am planning on having the motor mounted on the boat during the move. If I need to complete the stringers and ribs I will, but if I don't need to I will likely wait until after the move. At least then I will have all my tools available and a heated building.

That reminds me, I am so psyched as I scored a 10" compound miter saw and a new roto zip. WOOOHOOO! :joyous:

So let me know about your thoughts on the move. Oops, I am on the wrong pc - I was going to upload some photos of the cap going back on. I will log on from the other computer and post them. Thanks guys

Putting the cap on was much easier than taking it off. This is the brother in law.

Maybe that is because all I did was take pictures

See how much I shrunk the hull? This is the twin sister. She really did help.

Here you can see where I need to trim back the transom. What happened is that I put it in backwards. If the transom were flipped it would be fine.

One you add the "nailer" strips to the inside edge of the hull and run the rub rail screws/bolts/rivets back in, it should pull up tight...

If the hull seems well supported and everything is strapped good, plus the transom is properly supported by the trailer [meaning no overhang]...you should be good to go with the engine on the transom...no matter what, though...since there isn't much structure inside, you should take it real easy down the road...wouldn't want to hit a pothole and bounce a hole into your nicely finished hull...

I can't remember but...If the trailer is a Bunk Trailer and NOT a roller, then strapping the hull in about 3 places should give you all the support required for towing. Like GT says, easy on the bumps!!!!:bump:

Wood, my trailer is rollers, not bunks. Is that good?

GT, great news. thanks so much. I will be careful on the bumps. Still not planning on moving until probably Feb at the earliest, but with the holidays and weather I don't seem much getting done.

Roller trailers put a lot of pressure on the hull at the point of contact with the rollers. Bunks do a better job of distributing the weight. I would strongly suggest you attempt to make some carpeted bunks to slide on top of the rollers for transport of your empty hull.

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

PA, Thanks for dropping in. I feel like I still have a long way to go. The progress has come to a crashing halt as of late. I guess that is the case for most people with the holidays and cold weather. Thanks for cheers. :cold:

Thanks Decker, I do love new toys, and getting the HDs working is no exception. :ranger:

Wood, GT, Thanks. I will do that if I can not get the stringers in. I did get to work on the boat a tad today. I ground down the area on the transom that prevented the cap from fitting. Hopefully tomorrow I will get to glass it back in and then that will be done. Also got all the other sharp areas ground down from final coat on the transom. No pics today. I do love my tyvek suit and full face mask. I am feeling great and do not feel there was any issues with breathing that carp. Those other masks just did not seem to make me comfy.

So here is a question: I have been thinking about how to resolve the water flow to bilge area for some time. Last night I got an idea and want to know if it is workable or not. Think of a U upside down. My thought is to make a center stringer shaped like a U and put it in upside down so there is a channel for water do flow down the very center of the hull from front to back. I would use 1/2 pieces of pvc pipe glued into a cut out in the stringer to allow water to pass from any area down to the center (lowest) point of the boat. Does this make sense?

I am trying to avoid water sitting along the center stringer, or in any compartment. Just a thought, let me know what you guys think. I will keep hoping for decent weather, but I do have the covers and can hook up the heater if I get some extra time. Thanks guys.
