Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Omg, it worked!!! Wow, I am starting to get use to this. Look out, might just get some video downloaded some day! Thanks, AJ

See compared to this iboats posting & navigation stuff, boat building is EASY

I just can't find where I left that button from Staples :D

I could use 3 or 4 about now myself: 1 for home, 1 for work, 1 for the boat building & an extra just in case...

@my work: Just because we always have in the past, doesn't mean we have to continue to do everything the hardest way.......

But hey, at least my paychecks don't bounce  <<-- That was NOT always the case in Las Vegas....

JB, compared to several computer related things, boat building is easy. I just found out last night that my hard drive is now going out. Luckily for me I have an external hard drive that I store all my photos, etc on. I have also changed hard drives and done other behind the scenes computer stuff before - just not enough to feel 100% comfortable with it. So this thread might have to derail a bit in the coming weeks so I can gain the encouragement and info needed to feel good about doing a hard drive replacement.

I usually end up doing things the hardest way until I have done them enough to find better ways. Certainly that button from staples would be awesome when I get to replacing the hard drive though ;) Still, iboats is awesome cause the friendly encouragement and direction makes a huge difference in the whole process.

So glad to hear your checks are not bouncing, that would really suck.

Well, I am off to starting another day. The dogs are whining cause they are not being fed yet. Someone needs to remind them the pack leader comes first. :D

Have a great day.

Here is a quick leap into another world and I need some thoughts from you techy gurus. My nephew is 18 and will be 19 the end of Jan. He has a buddy who just got the $1300 Apple Macbook pro. The only things I know about Apple are they are out of my price range, good computers, and they run on a different operating system. So, Kaleb is working his first full time job making $10 an hour and working on up to $15 an hour. He wants to make his first big purchase. Apple IPad, Apple Macbook Pro, or something else. Not sure how many versions there are of each, but I know most teens want, want, want and he is no different. I question him on what he wants to do with it, he says music and graphics. Can't help but think, you watch those things with an old unit, not a new one (virus, bug, virus, trojan - no the other kind)

So I am trying to put options together for him so he can make an informed decision. I will probably throw in a ACER laptop with 15 or 17 in screen, at least 4 GB RAM, 500 or 750 GB HDD, CD/DVD play/write, multi media reader, any of course good graphics.

I can't imagine a teen wanting a small 13 in screen or calling that good graphics, but that might just be me and my eye problems talking. My idea of a good screen is 47 inches 12 feet away. UT OH, we r gonna derail again.

As far as music, something without a lot of low tones - cause I don't hear them (hard to figure that one out but I think it was from years of a siren blaring in my ears). I like to be able to understand what they are singing (call me old). I recall a radio station once make reference to songs from my era "classics" OUCH! Get me a historic license and I guess I am set.

BTW, Yes Air Supply is one of my favorite bands from the past, I also like Lone Star, Bruno Mars - wow he can sing and love the words like The lazy song:cool, but don't get me started. My song for the boss is Celine Dion's Because you love me! Awwww! Enough mush.

So what do you all think about the various apples that a teen boy might like? Which would keep their interest the longest? I don't even know what each does and does not do so feel free to tell me that too.

Thanks, from the worlds BEST AUNT!;)

Well, I have the official word, we are moving back to Ohio. No exact date yet, but looks like it will be by the end of this year. Here are my problems with Ohiom, I grew up there part of the time and have a very negative impression of Ohio. I even get that sick feeling in my gutt as I return for a visit. There are far fewer lakes, NO ALLIGATORS to see, and thanks to Trooper and his move, it has been brought to my attention that I will need to prep the boat motor for winter. Dang, does it ever stop? I am gonna need more faces to choose from if this really happens. :D

Well, I will be returning home to MS early next week to get at the boat again. I will be starting with the stringers. Plan is to get all the stringers and ribs sized properly to get a photo with all of them in place and verify the pitch on the deck. Then I can start glassing in the stringers.

Question, Do I need to glass the stringers before putting them in the boat like I did the transom or just allow the resin to absorb into the wood and glass them into the boat? I definitely have the restoration bug, I hate being away from home, can't sleep without dreaming of the workshop I need, when I look at houses for sale I am looking for the perfect workshop, and find I am willing to make changes to the house. The fence, well I will leave the white picket to Trooper, I will just go for any fence that keeps the dogs in for now. Definitely not looking to be inside the city limits, and neighbors - the further the better!

Stepping aboard quickly to answer this. I'm in IT and deal mainly with Windows based computers. I have very limited experience with MAC/Apple products. I do know that IF you run into problems with the OS, you get to pay Apple to fix it. Or at least that's how its been in the past, they may have actually loosened up since Jobs passed. Also, software (the programs you run on it such as Microsoft Office) are usually slow to the field. So the PC may have a piece of software released today and you may have to wait months for the MAC/Apple version to be released. Again, that might have changed as well but the market segment is dominated by Windows. In regards to virii, hackers and such don't write them for Apple products because they make up such a small part of the computer world.

In regards to Windows PC's you may want to look at either a convertible tablet or the new Surface from Microsoft (running Windows 8 Pro, not the RT crap they have out now). By selecting the Pro version of the Surface, you can run all the programs you have now if they run under Windows 7. Also, its a tablet so its highly portable but the plug in keyboard gives you the functionality of a laptop. I've been kicking around requesting one from work. In the full on laptop segment I'd go with either Acer, Asus, Dell or Toshiba. Something with at least a dual core i5/i7 processor, 4-8GB of Ram, and I'm assuming this is a student so I'd recommend springing for something with a SSD harddrive. A SSD drive has no moving parts to fail like a conventional harddrive will. So the laptop can be plopped down rather hard, within reason of course, without fear of causing complete C drive failure.

Best suggestion, take him to a computer store and let him test drive a few models to see what he likes and doesn't like and then go from there.

Brian, thanks for the visit. You are welcome aboard anytime. I really appreciate the info. You might be onto something with the visit to the store. My fear is he has a friend who has it and wants it, but $1300 is a lot of money for something you don't need. Thanks

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

In the past & currently, it has been my experience that Mac's are a 'better' platform for any type of work that doesn't involve word processing, spreadsheets and corporate 'office' functions. If he wants to 'work' with graphics art/photoshop/music etc software, Mac is probably the way to go. Internet & gaming are functions of the hardware, and good, better & incredible hardware is available for both platforms. Briangcc is correct, that Mac does lag behind some in terms of software release dates for some software, but not all. Windows compatible software for a Mac is really slow to market, and often expensive.

The GUI is much different & how/where you store info is much different on a Mac then a Windows based pc. Recent touchscreen smart phones, Windows 7 to some degree & definitely more so w/ Windows 8, are all moving towards a more typical Apple-like Graphic User Interface. Some love 1 & hate the other, so it may come down to which he prefers during a retail window shopping trip.

I didn't care for my 1st Blackberry, learned to use it & came to NEED it's functionality as more then a phone. Didn't really like the graphic interface on my touchscreen Android phone when I switched to it. Took a long time, but now there is NO way I'd step back to the BB platform. EVER.

In terms of 'current' 'latest' 'greatest' etc, at the same price point, say $1000, Windows laptops will provide significantly more bang then a Mac.

I currently primarily use a 17" Acer, fairly fast dual core processor & decent nvidia graphics card (lots of resident graphics RAM), 8GB RAM, 1TB HD, and paid less then $500 about a year ago, but it was 'released' 9months +/- before I bought it. I couldn't be happier w/ it. It is faster then a 1 year older quad core loaded tower at home, that was on the market for almost a year before I bought it.....

That's how I tend to buy electronics, wait for the latest & greatest to come out, and buy the discounted previous generation as it's phased out. But usually, at their launch, the Acer laptop & HP tower were both upper price range, highly optioned & well reviewed computers.

I'm not sure I could even buy a Mac hyper~nano ipad for $500

Apple MacBook Air, 13": CNET Editors' Rating 4.0 stars Excellent

$1,099.95 to $1,869.96

Review Date: 6/18/12 Average User Rating 4.0 stars 14 user reviews

The good: The 13-inch MacBook Air has new Intel CPUs, better battery life, and an improved 720p Webcam, and finally adds USB 3.0 ports, while shaving $100 off the price from last year's models.
The bad: The design, while strong, stays largely the same: there's no Ethernet port, and the base SSD storage option of 128GB is smaller than a standard hard drive, though common for ultrabooks.

The bottom line: This year's MacBook Air opts for gradual improvements rather than anything revolutionary, but lowered prices continue to make it the go-to mainstream recommendation for any MacBook owner-to-be.

If I had to pick something, I am fairly sure a Mac wouldn't be it, unless I absolutely needed to be working w/ graphics/music. And by graphics I mean graphic design work, not the graphics card or GUI.

Laptop buying guide <<<--Suggestions about how to pick a laptop.... Your nephew may not want to lug around my fairly substantial 17" laptop, and if I had to lug it further then from the truck into a hotel while traveling or back into the office when I return, I probably wouldn't want to either. But I use it 75%+ of the time as my desktop at the office.

Now back to boat building:

Question, Do I need to glass the stringers before putting them in the boat like I did the transom or just allow the resin to absorb into the wood and glass them into the boat?

Exactly like the transom:
Apply resin to the stringers, allow them to tack off, apply more resin and wrap w/ CSM, all edges & both faces ;)

What is it? Reverse gold rush, all you western & mid-westerners all moving back east????

Well all this movement east, may help to tip the country just enough that California won't break off & sink during the next earthquake:eek:
:D
 I poured out some resin for my west coast homies to atone for that ^^^

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

JB,

Thanks for the time you took on the pc info. I have passed along all the info you guys gave and will just hope he makes a decision he is happy with long term. We all make mistakes but it is hard to watch the younger crowd make the same ones over and over.

I can't wait to get back at the boat project, but I am a bit worried about doing anything to the motor in preperation for the trip to Ohio. Looks like we will be up there yet this year which means WINTER, so I really have to do some prep to the motor for winter. Guess I need to start researching how to drain everything and prep the motor, and time is running out. I get more an more antsy as I sit here in this hotel day after day, but we are providing support to the boss so it is worth it.

I am hoping to be done with the bottom half of the boat before moving so I can put the cap and motor back on. I do not expect to get all the electrical hooked up before the move. I will also still have things to do to the cap before painting it, but that can happen in Ohio.

You might be right Jb, California might not fall off into the ocean, but Ohio and PA may become sink holes if everyone keeps moving that direction. Oh, but that is not all bad, we can fill it with water and call it a lake. Problem solved! :D

I am sure things will be fine in Ohio once we find a house and get settled. We never know why we are led down a certain road, but God always has a reason and knows best. My Grandmother is so excited as is my mother. My mother is facing a few medical decisions that I might be able to help her feel more secure about making. She has also been saying she was going to retire for several years, and I would really like to see her do it the end of this year. Our presence in Ohio might make all those things happen with as little fear as possible on her part. I just need to find that workshop :p I mean house that is perfect for us. Well, can't wait to get back at those stringers.

Ok, I am finally back in MS and hoping to get back at the boat. I am just wondering what is the lowest temp that I can work on the fiber glassing? I would like to get going on the stringers, but it is getting cold here. Not sure if I need to wait for a warmer day or not.:confused::confused:

Well, let me know your thoughts, I am anxious to get back at it.

Thanks,
AJ

60? for 12 hours! Ambient and substrate needs to maintain that temp or higher for it to cure properly. You can tarp the boat and place heat lamps under the tarp to keep the temp up during drying.

Well, I went out and bought another 10x10 canopy cause I left the first 1 in OH. DUH. I also got a heater attachment to attach to the fan I have. I have extra tarps and clips to hook the tarps to the canopy. Going to set it up tomorrow and see how it works. I still need to do some final cut downs on the stringers so I will work on that tomorrow and once I get them to the right sizes I will fiberglass them. I will add photos along the way. So excited to be getting at this again.

Hey Trooper, Thanks, I hope so too. I think it will but if not I will just get a bigger heater. Thought I would start small with the $19 heater attachment from HF.

Heater - Harbor Freight Tools

Hey Trooper I have another question for ya on the computer issue. Is it possible to replace my SATA HDD with a Flash Memory? I am just starting to read about them, but I am not excited that the HDD in my 3 yr old computer did not last longer than it did. Of course, better the HDD than the mother board. Anyhow, just looking to make the purchases and get it fixed before I loose it all together. So should I stick with the SATA HDD or try a flash memory if it is even possible?
Thanks.

YEP WOOD, That's the one. I have a fan similar to the one it is made for. I figured I will just use some velcro straps to attach it.

On my other project (replacing HDD on desktop) Feel free to chime in if you guys have opinions on this. I have computer that I purchased from Cyberpower right at 3 yrs ago. It is primarily used for photo/video work for family and friends. I run Win 7 64 bit, with Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @3.20 GHz 3.19 GHz with 4.0 GB RAM. I started having trouble with the system all of a sudden shutting down and restarting then going to the BSD (blue screen of death). I found a site that evaluates the errors the system logs and was told the hd was going bad. So I am evaluating which HDD or SSD to put in it. Here is the catch (cause there always is one ) I don't know much about the inside of the pc. Typical woman, can get in the car and start it then drive it, but does not know what makes it start. ;) Well, not really I know more about a car than most women and probably the pc too .

So after doing some reading on the SSD and seeing that they do not appear to come in 500 GB and if they do I probably could not afford it; I started looking more into HDDs again. Here is the one I am thinking of:

Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive

Now, I am thinking this one based on 4 1/2 stars in reviews on amazon and just under $85. I figured I would be spending around $100 for one. I am also in the market for a new EXternal HD. I currently have a WD My Book that I have been very happy with, but I need a bigger one. I am thinking 2 or 3 TB. ANY THOUGHTS????

Been building PC's for almost 20 yrs. I like SeaGates and I get most of my stuff here...TigerDirect.com - Electronics, Tablets, Phones, Office Supplies & Video Games. I think this is a good deal.
Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s at TigerDirect.com
I'd buy an external case and put this in it...
Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 3TB, SATA III (6Gb/s), 3.5, 7200RPM, 64MB at TigerDirect.com
Installation is basically, UnPlug the old and plug in the new. If it was hard, I couldn't do it!!!!

I like to shop at www.newegg.com. They have a wide selection and very good prices, plus alot of really good reviews from people who have bought from them. Tiger direct is also very good as WOG has said.

One other thought about your HD. All of the HD manufacturers have cloning software to copy your HD to the new HD. The software can be found on the manufacturers website if it's not provided with your purchase.
