Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Beginning of the Reassembly today!!!!!! Started off today by building a set of clamps for the transom. got 2, 3 foot pieces of all thread, nuts and fender washers to make the bolts. Cut them in 12 in sections and welded the nut to the end of the all thread pieces. (making a 12 in bolt, 6 each)

I kind of took WOG's idea with his clamps and modified it a bit, I didnt want to mess with that many pieces (clamps, bolts /nuts and a gooey transom all at the same time) Here, put the operation of chop sticks in you brain.....it was my idea and may help you follow my thought path........

Made 2 clamps with a 12 inch throat and 2 with an 18 inch throat. I wanted to be able to reach to the far corners of the transom, the hull kind of flares out and aft on the outer 12 inches . I glued a 3 inch block to one side of the clamp, above the bolt. ( 3 inches because that is wider than the transom and hull together, serves as a pivot point for the clamp) In this pix show what Im saying....

Here is the dry fit, too get it all lined up and the clamps a slip/snug fit. I didnt want to dink around messing with them when the PB was kicking.....

More to come....

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Ok this is my first shot at PB, Im sure it wil fit the bill, but I have some questions......

4 buckets, 500 ml of resin....

I measured the chop strands and Cabosil, very much like I measure the seasonings when I smoke a brisket......started with 2 of these and added from there to get the consistency I wanted. I would guess that I ended p with a bit more that a half cup of chop per bucket

I used approx a cup and 1/3rd of cabosil to make warm/runny peanut butter like consistency for 500 ml. 20/20 hind sight, I should have used more I think.... If you havent used this before, make damn sure you use a respirator ad gloves when handling it it is a super fine dust of ground glass beads. Absolutely will get in your lungs and embed in your skin....

After I got it mixed completely, I added the catalyst.....Im positive if I had done it before mixing in the ingredients, I would have ran out of time....

Question...... when I was mixing, it seemed that after the cabosil was completely mixed in, the chop was wanting to ball up, should I have cut and shredded into finer pieces ( like maybe 1/4 in max?) it wasn't as uniformly distributed through the mix as I have seen in others pictures. When I spread it, i assisted in breaking up the larger clumps of chop and spread them all over.

More to come....

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

OK, final product....

I will need to go back and re-pb to better the fillets and fill in spots as needed, ( this was done from squeeze out) also install the PVC tube to go from bilge drain area to the outside skin. but over all I an pretty happy with the install!!!

The PB has already kicked, but I think I will leave the clamps on for at least 48 hours

Thats it for today, and this weekend. Will be kissing up to the wife tomorrow for putting up with mine and the kids crap for another year!!!

Have a good weekend All!!!

Yep chop your fibers a LOT smaller. What you made is what I call Tiger Hair. Very structural but hard to spread! Use scissors and cut the fibers into 1/4" small chunks for PB glue. About 1/4 cup of fibers per quart of resin

installed the water drains also...... I put 3 each on the stringers and 2 on the bulkhead.

I ground out the coves like this, using a 90 deg datco with a grinding bit.....

PB'd the pvc pieces in......I left them long and sanded then down after it cured.

After all that cured, I did get first layer of 4 inch 1708 tabbing on bot the bow floor and the transom. I still need to get those pix uploaded. I know...no pix, not true.....so maybe I did, maybe I didnt....
