Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

So, tell us Exactly how to wrapped the edges. Here's how I do it. I cut 4" strips of 1.5oz CSM and then pull and tug on em to Stretch and kinda tear the fibers to make em loose and floppy. They end up being almost 5 to 6" wide by the time I'm done yankin on em. I then wet out the edges with resin and then lay the strips on the edges and then use a chip brush with 1/2 the bristles cut off and DAB the CSM into the resin forcing it up into the mat to make it go clear. I'll add more resin IF needed but only if needed. Once it's wet out and clear another trick if the mat is particularly unruly is to take some plastic and wrap it over the edge and use your hands to smooth it all out. You can even leave it on until it cures and peel it off later if you want. WalMart bags work great for this. Usually tugging and tearing the mat to loosen it up makes it lay down much better and you won't have the issue shown in the pic.
Anywhoooo that's what this Old Dumb Okie would do. Others may come along and tell you how Dumb I really am!!!!!

That crazy, old, dumb Okie up there^^^^ ain't so crazy or dumb...that is some good technique there...
JC also makes a really good point...keep your catalyst ratios in the 1-2% range...unless summer is delayed for another 6-8 months and your temps get into the low 60's then you can kick it it up to a max of 2.5-2.75%...that's gonna make some really hot batches!
Another thing I have to ask...
Did you pre-wet the plywood with resin and wait til it got tacky?...then slap the CSM on?
One other trick I have used with much success...
That is to slightly thicken my resin with some Cabosil...not too much, just enough to make it syrupy, maybe 50 ML of cabosil to every 100 ML of resin...helps to make up for some voids...kind of like the difference between watery super glue and thick super glue...
Woody has also mentioned in other places the use of stick pins to hold mat/cloth in place...
One other technique I use is to pre-wet the piece of cloth/mat that I am working with on top of a piece of cardboard at the workbench, then carry it to the workpiece...this can be difficult with larger pieces and an assistant can help with carrying the floppy, sloppy pieces, but by pre-wetting, the piece tends to lose its springiness...you can also use the cardboard to carry the piece of mat/cloth to the workpiece...
Finally, you have to be careful and not overwork the piece by dabbing...once you get it down and relatively bubble free, leave it alone because what can happen is you actually dab at it so much with the chip brush, you push the resin away and leave the area too dry...which is also why you need to keep the chip brush fairly wet when dabbing...
Don't worry, getting around corners is one of the greatest challenges of fiberglassing, especially with CSM because of its springy nature, but with a bit of practice you'll work out a technique that works for you...

I don't think you will have to worry about running out of MEPK if you got it from fiberglass site. I bought mine from them and always had way more than I needed. I think JB is right on why you got the dry spots, no worry's just grind it down and redo it!

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Thanks Gents...the guidance is very much appreciated!! I wetted the wood, and immediately put the csm on, rollered the top edge until it was transparent, the folded the sided over with the roller. I worked the bubbles with the bubble breaker that came with my order of resin.

I will try this next time:

Measure per JB's instructions, throw in a bit of cabosil
stretch and pull
Dab with the bristle brush and try not to work it too much
Sound like that dog will hunt??

After grinding off the bad stuff, do i need to pre-preg the wood again?

Thanks again guys....

Nope I might just sand it with 60 grit just a bit then wet it out and lay it down

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

are you using wax in the resin? if so everything will need to be wiped down and sanded. I'm guessing you aren't since fiberglass site sells the unwaxed resin. If it is un waxed, you are good to go as Wood described.

Arch, not waxed resin...... spent the day grinding off last weekends work...... and got one of the stringers re-glassed wit the metric, stretch, pull and dab process..... results, much better!!! still some spots, but much better!!!!

I was definitely mixing too weak...... when I was grinding, found spots that were still tacky....from last weekend!!

Here she is all tucked away for the night......

I know the work bench is a pig stye..... wish I had a big 40 x 80 shop to do this in.... unpack....repack....unpack.... redo.....at least im not laying in dirt I spose!!!

Hope you all get to spend time with friends and family tomorrow!! Happy Easter All!!!

Hey All, Pretty dang good day today......played hooky from work, got to meet one of our resident glass grues WOG, he is very nice guy and am glad to have met him! (not as bright as he says he is though)

Helped me out with the sewing machine, got lots if tips and guidance.....

He was also gracious enough to show me the way with CSM.....

Over all had a great day! All kidding aside, WOG is a wealth of knowledge and he shares it freely. So if he chimes in, its worth listening to the "dumb ol'Oki!!!

Thanks again!!
