Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Finally got to have a bit of fun today.....

Supplies from US Composite.

First layer of 1.5 OZ CSM

Even with a 3/8th round over routed on the edges, still ended up with some bubbles.....guess after cure, ill sand them out and build up the areas.....Hopefully it gets better after some more practice.

Very nice re-purposing on the Desk!!! It should work Great for you. When you going over the edges do some tugging and tearing on the CSM and it will loosen the fibers and make it more flexible and easier to conform to the rounded edges. ;)

OK, I may be in luck, I found 1980 Mercury 115, power tilt/trim and controls locally for 500. PO says it hasnt ran in 3 years. But it ran great when he took it off his boat with a rotten transom........ Ill go look at it tomorrow. It is currently sitting on a stand, and he didnt know what the compression is. What do you think???

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Do you have access to a spark plug socket and a compression tester? A few basic hand tools?
Bring a known good, fully charged battery with you...and some jumper cables...
Remove all the plug wires and ground them to the engine, insert the compression tester into each cylinder and get a reading from each cylinder...you really only need to spin the engine about 3-4 revolutions per cylinder...
Note each cylinder's pressure...they should fall within about 10-20 percent of each other...they may be even a little further apart due to the engine sitting for so long, but you are mainly concerned with not having a really low cylinder or a really huge spread...
If they do, then check the oil in the lower unit by removing the bottom plug, usually uses a big flat blade screwdriver...just let a little bit of oil drain out, all you are looking for is that the oil is oil and not a milky color...
If possible, power up the tilt & trim, and cycle it up and down all the way...
Don't bother trying to start it up, because you really don't want that old gasoline getting in there...
Make sure you get all the rigging and wiring that goes with it, if not that stuff can get pretty pricey...
If these all check out OK, then start negotiating...you will probably still have to do some basic maintenance to engine, such as a tune up, maybe a carb rebuild, impeller change, etc...
Hopefully you will score a nice vintage engine that will provide good power and with proper care can give you many years of good service...
Good Luck!

Looks good! One thing to think about, I had a sea ray with white seats and red accents....that red got a little warm in the OK sun! Mine was darker, so that red probably won't be as bad.

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

looks fabulous!

expect a somewhat bulky package to arrive next week w/ my fireflite & duracraft vinyl :D

If you could make the fireflite's cushions just like your red & white, but please add pleats to the white insert. thanks a bunch! :watermelon:

I see slip covers for the dining room chairs and a complete set of place mats for your daughter's tea time table settings.

Have a good weekend

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Well, I went and checked out a 1980, Merc 115 today, lower unit oil good, between 110 and 115 lbs of compression on all 6. Was unable to verify the tilt motor......came with controls!

What do you suppose the "trailer" button does?

Only thing I could find at this point, was the tip of the skag is broke off......

This guy is a happy camper today!!!

ps. I will be looking to unload a 1976 Johnson 85 hp, with controls if you guys know anyone wanting that one....(see post 4 of this thread)

Have a good rest of your weekend!!!

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

The trailer button is to activate the TILT function of the power T&T, sort of like a power window button in a car labelled AUTO.

Hit the trailer button once, when you get the boat loaded on the trailer, and it'll max tilt it up & out of the water for trailering, often to prevent a broken skeg. oops

Once lifted, when you're ready to launch the boat, hit the button again & it cycles the OB down to running position.

corjen trust me that old tower of power is sweet engine i have the same cant rememeber if its a 75 or what but it will push your boat along quite nicely. i love mine and even at 500 bucks its a huge score

go out and the repair manual it covers a wide variety and years of merc but well worth it especially if your gonna tackle an impellar yourself.

i did mine and as long as you read the manual a couple time and get familiar with it its inst all that hard. That thing rocks :applause:

Nice score on the merc, how big is your gas tank? LOL, those little portable one's wont keep that thing running too long, maybe you have a nice one under the floor? Your work and progress are great inspiration. Maybe next weekend I'll get going on mine, I was stuck finishing house chores.
