Mike can almost always be counted on via PM. Even if it's a chat over coffee about sewing :watermelon:

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Those Merc's are Nice machines and WILL do the job but.. as JBC says that's just a bit HIGH. I'm Partial to the MORSE 4300 Zig Zags and the can usually be had, IF you can find em for $50 to $75. If you're NOT in a big hurry I'd keep looking for a Morse and see if one turns up. I checked OKC, Tulsa, and Wichita CL and there are NONE. I'll keep looking too. White's, Necchi's and Singer's all make the All Metal Heavy duty machines that will do the job and are similar in the way they look and work. the Merc's are bit different in how they operate but still are very good machines.

OK WOG, I took your advise....here is what I ended up with...

Definitely having fun trying to learn how to use it!! A bit if a learning curve here though....my thread keeps wadding up underneath the foot. A neighbor friend is going to come over and try to help.....when I get it figured out, my baby girl wants me to sew her a night gown.

What the heck, this is supposed to be fr the boat.....!!!!!

have a good evening all!!!

As long as the requested garments are small (your progeny's sized) and not prom or wedding gowns*, have at it. Dual purpose machine :)

If you find yourself watching reruns of Say yes to the dress or the latest reality drivel clothing designer shows, send up a flare my friend.... You will be in NEED of an intervention.

Take 2 spoonfuls of cabosil & mix into an 8oz glass of Gatorade. That should hold you until the Iboats deprogramming team shows up to resuscitate your facilities.....

*Not a wise fabrication skills test for a rookie seamster**.

**Masculine of seamstress, right??

Nice looking Morse you found! Good luck

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Question for you guys, I am getting ready to start glassing and setting my new transom and stringers.

Transom: I dont know if I am supposed to "wet" the raw plywood with just resin, let cure, then a layer of csm, cure and then 1708, tab in with 1708.....or.... Do the layers at the same time? Do I put the same layers on the edges as well?

Stringer: Same question really.... Also, I understand that I will "wrap" the stringer does CSM go on also? It seem that the pix Ive seen are showing just 1708 for tabbing in and wrapping....Also, should I wet the bottom edge? It seems that it would be completely encased anyway (bedded in pl and fillited with PB and tabbed in.....)

Tanks in advance!!

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Had to do a little repair on the cradle today......I had pushed the hull out of the garage to blow out winter debris.....when I pushed it back in, the middle support broke off when it hit the floor threshold.....

At JBCurt...haha, dont worry, you wont have to call me "Betty" just some practicing to get the feel of the machine.....

For the girl.....

for middle boy...

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Wet, YES! Cure, NO!...just let it get tacky/sticky, then wrap with one layer of CSM...this is done primarily to encase the wood and basically make very water resistant...
A trick to wrapping over the edges is to round over all the edges a bit, then, instead of trying to cover half the piece with on layer and try to wrap the little bit of overhang...is to stand the piece up using some clamps to help hold it vertical and wrap the piece half way over each side...then if there is any void left on the flats, they can easily be covered...
Here is a sketch of what I am talking about...

PS- here is "woodonglass" link to transoms, stringer and decks...don't know if you got this before...

I Like the sewing. Practice will make it easy smeazy!!! That''s exactly like my old Morse Machine. Let me know if I can assist with anything about it. PM me if needed. If the thread is wadding up you may have the needle in backwards.

Re: My 1968 Glastron GT160 rebuild......

Thanks WOG.....I adjusted the bobbin tension (per video instructions in your Build a bench thread), also once I had the machine threaded correctly, seem to work like a champ.
I have to admit, it was pretty fun making those pillow cases......!!

In addition to my baby girls 6th birthday party, complete with 9 other young lady's screaming and giggling, I did manage some boat time today.....

Transom is looking good. Precoat with some 1% Resin and you'll be ready for installation!!!
