Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks bear!

OK all question, I have to replace both bottom drain tubes. The top one I will glass over then re-drill
after the transom pour. For the bottom one I was thinking I would temp install a pvc pipe then bed
in with some PB to seal around it . This will keep the nida-bond from seeping in to the hull area.
What should I coat the pvc with to keep PB from sticking. I will pull the pipe out later then install
new brass tube.
Does this sound like a good plan?
S.P.

We have a Neptune Beach in J-ville
Nope, this is the 1! An assume 6 days at Ocean One Hotel right on the beach, right at the end of the road coming over from J-ville! 2 years in a row, both are 1 of the best out of town trip the wife & I've taken. Great community & beach. Inland waterway 6hr fishing trip both years were great too.

It's pushing 30 outside, I got to run some honey-do errands, so hope it continues to warm while I'm gone, & I'll get on to the workday...

Enjoy the weather!

Hey glad you had a good time down here in my neck of the woods! This really is a good place to live we have nice beaches , great golf coarse,s , mile,s of waterway with great fishing, and NFL football.:) The place you stayed was at the end of Atlantic Blvd maybe across from the Sea Turtle inn. I live on the north side of the St Johns about 40 min from where you were.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks Gt the guys on the Chrysler forum do know there stuff . I on the other hand can barely keep my lawnmower running.

Well I did do a little on the boat today. I did some glass on the tree damaged bow
DSC00097.jpg

did some more sanding on the cap and then set the hard top on my trailer hoarse.
I,m gunna need to replace some wood where the bottom claps go.
DSC00098.jpg

I may work on that tomorrow. I have some very very dry pt plywood. That should be good to use I think..

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I like the glass...beer bottle, that is, on the freshly done glass work...makes the job way more refreshing...:D

Just a thought on the hardtop...since its prolly gonna need the same treatment as most of our boats, as in a full restoration...

Try and cut it apart, carefully along the edges, cut, fit, and resin/CSM or epoxy some new plywood, as needed for structural support, then relaminate the "skins" back together, for a nice new, solid hardtop...?

L8r,
GT

PS- I don't think it is an issue, but double check with "oops!" or "woodonglass", about using the PT Plywood...the only issue I have heard about is it creates some kind of galvanic corrosion when in contact with aluminum...but there may be other issues...

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Don,t know how that bottle kept following me around.:p
Yep GT that,s pretty much the plan the top and side,s are beveled so I
will cut along the white line and leave the tapered edge in place.

It seems they did,nt glass the bottom of it in originally .
The black paints got to go .I wonder if I should just clean the under side prime and paint?

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Well today I scrubbed the inside of hardtop with some TSP ,finished taking all the old snaps and hardware off then cut the skin off and cleaned old wood out. If they had glassed it in originally it prolly would,nt have rotted out.
DSC00107.jpg

I cut out the new wood put a good coat of resin on and also put a layer of CSM and cloth on cracked edge of H/T.

Put another layer of csm on the damaged bow .I had enuff resin left in my pail to mix a little PB
and patch some holes in the deck.
I guess baby steps are better no steps at all!

Good progress this weekend S.P. Sounds like you're making the right choices on the hard top. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Yep, if you don't grind back to good glass, and that might be your repair on the inside, the crack may telegraph though a patch & even the build primer. Start by filling w/ layers of torn pcs of CSM, start small, then a little bigger all the way around, layered until just full. Once cured, the torn CSM edges feather in better when sanding, acetone wipedown, final fill w/ finishing filler (very fine filler), to just over full, final sand......

Have a gander here:

I liked his epoxy & teak vids too.

Found a sliding top boat w/ my CL search bot, but too much $ & not close enough. But man, I dig the hardtops. Watched a few vids over the weekend @how to fab 1. So my FireFlite may get one yet. But it's a tilt up, not a slider. Like it though;)

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Yep. I think his & friscos vids are the only way I'd be heading down this road. Reading through oops & others was almost enough to make me say no, HELL no, no way dude, not gonna happen. And I'd already spent a few late nights & weekends glassing my kayak/canoe this summer. But that was w/ TiteBond III & plywood w/ a dust mask, not poly & respirators.

Then there's WOG to help w/ the interior, & JDA isn't far behind him:D. Bid on 3 sewing machines over the weekend:facepalm:

We'll get 'em done. It only took 2wks for me to figure out Jas was a machine:p and I'd never get it done that fast. 1 step at a time and a little each week & it'll get there.....

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Wow, there for a minute I wondered if you were living next to the prison & that was 'Ole Sparky:eek:. I'll be running some duct tape around a spare couch pillow & an empty 5gal drywall bucket:facepalm: for the 1st splash. I still want to track down some details on the removable seats that were 'dock ready' that were mentioned in 1 1960's glastron brochure I saw online. I'm guessing it was the rear bench seat, but there were also partially angled seats:

Not real sure what the real thought was behind those clipped seats.. But....................
