Grey primer white top and bottom. I also need to find some tubing for the handrail that was on it
I don,t think I can shine it good enough. I think when the tree fell on the bow a branch also landed on theH/T.

SP, It sure looks like it was hit. If you can get it straight, and it is aluminum, a scotch bright pad and a little oil will make it shine like all get out. I used cutting oil in my past life as a machinist with scratch pads to really get a good shine on aluminum.

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Thanks Troop, I,ll have to give that a try!

Well I was itchen to paint something so I primed the H/T
did the bottom first.

It took a while to get it all sanded and ready . Then I primed the top.

I was going to do the roll and roll but I only had a 1/2" roller cover so I tipped it in with a brush.
I think it turned out ok . Now I guess I need to sand and put another coat on.
I may have layed it on to heavy.

Nice sphelps. I have been curious, how is that roll/tip method? I watched some videos on utube last night, looks like it works very well. I need to research further to find out if you ned to use a special type of paint though.

Roll and tip is not that hard Trooper you just roll out a small section about 3x3 then wet a brush but take most of the paint out. Start on the dry side with the brush angled slightly and pull across the rolled out section . You just want to avoid starting your stroke in wet paint. Just keep working it until it lays down how you want it. I had a few fuzzies in there I,ll have to sand out . It was a new roller cover and I forgot to defuzz it. The primer was the oil based Valspar metel tractor primer.

I hav,nt used foam rollers much but if they work better I,ll get some . I usually wrap tape around new roller covers to take the fuzz out but I forgot to .

For Roll n' Roll on your boat you should use the High Density foam rollers I sent the link for. Makes a BIG difference. Paint goes down smooth with no fisheyes or orange peel if you go with multiple thin coats. It took me a while to get on to it but once I did my hull looked like I sprayed it. I did buy a 60 gallon compressor and sprayed the top cap but Roll n' roll with ultra fine foam rollers can give excellent results.

What primer did you use by the way?

Looks good sp ..... I don't see any of the texture from the cloth on the underneath .... did you sand it of fill it with something?

I just lightly sanded with 100 grit then scrubed again with TSP . Then put thick coat primer.

I used the Valspar metal oil based.
Do you need to thin the finish paint when you roll and roll?
I may still try and spray but not sure.

Yes, My formula is 2 cups Valspar Color Paint, 1/4 cup of Acetone, 1oz of Hardener. Mix for 30 minutes. Apply thin coats.

Mix a bit, let cook, mix some more, cook, mix, cook, mix 30 mins. Ensures the hardener gets mix thoroughly. It's a pain but worth it when you see how glossy and hard the final finish is.

DSC00131.jpg

I came in last night feeling pretty good about the prime coat until this afternoon .
Brush line city!! Sanded the best I could the paper would get a little gummy then hit it again with the foam rollers.
Man I wish I had used the foam rollers to start with! Gunna sit it out in the sun tomorrow to dry really good.
Probably need to sand again. Not a happy camper here!

O well this will cheer me up. This is my every day luch time veiw ! :)

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Don't forget oops' suggestion, or was it WOG, wet sand to help keep sandpaper unloaded. Particularly when sanding fresh paint. Those paint goobers (??) stuck to the paper can put additional 'sanding' scratches in the paint. Like having pieces of 80grit stuck in your 220grit paper, the 220 will never get those 80 scratches out... and a drop or 2 of soap (dish) in a gallon of water helps too. The bugs will wet sand off too;). The water helps make the paper last longer, which is good, wet or wet/dry paper is more$. But I typically get wet/dry anyway, I like the paper & adhesive better.

Please don't quote me on it, but w/ wet sanding you might get away w/ going 1 grit stronger then you could normally. Using 320 instead of 400 may help get rid of the brush strokes.

I hope you choked on the tofu burger you had today at lunch....Super sweet view though. Really going to miss that Ocean One trip this year...

Great pic. Looks like St. George, or Cape San Blas near my neck of the woods. I think that you're hat is missing a few letters though. Yes, their should definitely be a nice soothing and stylish golden S and a U following that big, ugly orange F:) Actually, I just heard back from UF med school today!!!! I couldn't believe it. I'm on the definite maybe list for possible admission. LOL. It may not sound like much, but I'll take what I can get at this point. Of course, my head will explode if I get in and have to don the blue and orange (ouch it burns, it burns), but I'll make an exception just this once :) GO NOLES!!!!!! .......and gators???????
