Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

I had thought about a clear coat but I read here somewhere that it was not a good idea . Hard to touch up the paint if needed but I would love to make the paint more durable if possible. Who has this in stock and I wonder how hard it would be to shoot?
BTW a co-worker of mine who does a lot of all kind of painting suggested that when I shoot the stripes to pull the tape as soon as possible while still wet and the ridge will lay down a little. I will do that and see what happens.

I didn't put another coat on today instead I just did some wet sanding and will shoot hopefully the last coat on the cap..
I had some bad I guess you would call orange peal in the worst place up on the bow . It looked like little divots scattered here and there . Maybe from moisture . It happened right of the bat when I started spraying just the bow . The rest turned out great. I had to go a little aggressive with the sand paper. I think I got about 95% of it out so hopefully the next coat will turn out ok.

I used Rustoleum clear coat on my Jupiter in rattle cans. It did not hold up well and started flaking after only a couple seasons.

What I posted is Automotive quality Clear coat. You would apply minimum 3 coats and it has UV protection. I've been researching it quite a bit. Appears to be pretty good stuff. Good enough that I'm gunna try it on the BF this fall. I'm more than willing to be the Guinea Pig and let everyone know how it turns out. I can only report what my research tells me.

Would you have to buff it to make it shine? And how could I coat the hull now that it's right side up ?
It seems If they paint it on cars it would hold up fairly well..

I still had a few spots like this I hope will buff out later.

It is really hard to do a perfect job . I guess I just need more practice..

Buffing will take care of it. I will not be clear coating the hull, just the top side. If I ever flip her again I will clear coat it but not till then. You do buff and polish after the final clear coat is down. Usually 3 coats. But like they say if/when you need to do touch ups it's a lot harder to do with the clear coat. I'm still debating. Gunna wait till the season is ove and see how much "Damage" The paint job gets and then decide what to do.

Sounds like a good plan Wood .. If I had some I think I would experiment with it on the hard top. That way when I screw it up there wouldn't be as much to fix . :D

It looks fantastic! And shooting the clear on the hardtop sounds like a plan too!

SP,
I am starting to get just a little bit jealous. That boat is looking too good.

I also used it to re-shoot the transom.

I will wet sand the edge of the stripe then I will retape a little further out for the next coat wet sand then shoot the last coat where the tape line is now. Kinda gradually taper out.
I also touched up the bow eye area.

Thank you Wood you have been a great instructor .
I am still getting some orange peal every here and there. But it's funny and kinda driving me nuts. I had some on the stripes but the transom was perfect . Maybe it's me but it seems like horizontal surfaces get it and the vertical surfaces don't

Use a bit more thinner increase your distance and cut back on the fluid volume just a bit.

I have to admit, before coming to this site, I thought "orange peel" was just "what stuff looks like when you spray paint it" :p:p:facepalm:

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

When I sprayed the epoxy-like stuff last week, after having some trouble & getting similar advise to WOG's suggestions, it also sprayed, laid down & leveled much better when I turned the air pressure down at the compressor, just below 40psi for our el cheapo HF guns w/ a 1.8 tip. It all went much better after making those adjustments. The guns were expected to be disposable after each job was completed, and it appears to be just about that. The MEK thinner we use is starting to attack the plastic handle & body of the spray gun, that or the resin we're shooting is.....

It all looks really great, orange peel or not. Getting the paint smooth is why all those 'Foose' level car builders shoot so many layers of paint, wet sand & shoot multiple layers of clear, and wet sand some more. So that they can cut through the 'flaws' & nubs and get it smooth & slick....

Isn't there a small razor blade type paint planer (mini version of a hand held wood planer) just for cutting paint nubs off of fresh paint?

Anyway, we have since ordered the small inline filter & a small regulator, all of which will be at the gun, instead of 50-100ft away at the compressor.

I like the stripe & deck color together:cool:
