If his hard drive is intact (occasionally it's the power supply that fries the motherboard) it may be safer to remove the hard drive & use a 'black box' that fits his hard drive:
Then it's a USB plug-in to another computer, access the C drive data & file folder system
Got 99.9% of my old POS 'puter files back when the motherboard gave up. Enough that I can't remember not getting it all back, but the memory isn't what it used to be:facepalm:. POS power supply, which started the failure, was the smallest available that would drive the motherboard, that then had the max spec's of hardware added around it. Classic Worst Buy computer bundling to clear out older models but maxing them out w/ hard drive, RAM & etc...
