Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Your transom looks great. There is alot of work going into that little peice of wood. (LOL)
I do like to use the roller after i wet out the glass. It helps me from over applying the resin.
I keep a gallon can with acetone in it and let the roller set in the can while I am glassing.
Helps keep the buildup off the roller. I also use a wire brush to clean the roller before the resin sets up.
I also take the screw out of the end of the rollor after each use and clean the parts in the acetone.

But I really like to set fire to it and burn it completely clean.

I like the way you drilled out the holes and filled them back in with PB. I think I will do mine that way.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks Decker,

Sure was a lot of work to get that piece in, but in the end I am very happy with the finished product...

Cleaned up my BB today in preparation for a little more glassing, it still felt kinda stiff, so I broke out the torch and torched it...no really I torched it, turns out it had a plastic bushing inside that held the roller in place and now it is melted away......Oh well, I was gonna get another one any way...I'll keep this one as a reminder of all the things NOT to do with it...

Anyhoooo, Did a little grinding of the previously PB'd holes in the transom, plus a little extra all around grinding of nibs and nubs here and there...

And, got a couple more pieces wet out with resin on both sides and one layer of CSM on what will be the bottom of the pieces...
Hopefully tomorrow I'll PB them in...one itsy bitsy step closer...

You will see where they go when I get them in place tomorrow...

Happy Monday and Good EEEEEEvening!

Bummer on the plastic bushing. Made a mental note to check mine for one. I am anxious to see how your pb'd holes turn out, that sounds like a good idea.

Keep on keepin on......

Sorry about the roller. I never burn mine. Soaking always did the trick for me.
Anyhoo, about oversizing your holes and filling with PB. It works great for draintubes and is my preferred method. However when doing it for you Ski Tow Eyes you need to do one of two things. Either use some sort of oversized stainless washer or backer bar system to ensure the eye does not pull the PB Plug out of the transom (yes it could happen) or drill the holes to be fillied in this fashion which will enusre that it cannot/will not pull out.

Sorry GT If I'd known you were going to do this I would have informed you sooner. I'd recommend you look for aluminum plate or stainless to fabricate a backer plate for yours.

Good catch on the Ski Tow Eyes WOG.
I really don't like to burn my roller. Only as a last resort.
Like you say, keeping it soaking while in use and cleaning it after each use is best.
And the smell of burning resin is not pleasant.

No problem Wood, that is exactly what I had planned, Good point though for any and all wanting to imitate this procedure...I wouldn't trust a PB plug to support all that stress, even though I don't think there will ever be any skiing done form this boat, they are only going to be used the secure the boat to the trailer...

I have the old deck aluminum plate Band-aid, that was used to support the fishing seat pedestal...it is 1/4" thick, and I am cutting backers out of it for the stern eyes and the bow eye...at least 2-3 times the size of the PB filled holes, and adding SS Fender washers to boot...

I am planning on a similar procedure for the O/B motor mount bolts, cleat bolts, and any other stress points...drill larger, fill w/PB, re-drill to the bolt size, install 1/4" thick Aluminum backers with SS fender washers...

Thanks for lookin out...

Actually, it turned out to be a good thing...believe it or not...after some digging and scrounging around, a little ingenious engineering, I fabricated a threaded extension for the rod that goes inside the roller, and added a nut and washer to it...along with woods suggestion of getting a bud vase to soak it in with the minimum amount of acetone...it is better than ever and if it gets too clogged and stuck ever again, I can just unscrew the nut, pull it apart and THEN torch the living AICH, eeee, double toothpicks out of it...HA...HA...HA!:D
Because I, like you, have a little hidden pyro in me, TOO...

Other than that, I made a wooden base for the bud vase, so it wouldn't be as tippy and glued the bud vase to it...

Sorry, I have to run, but pics will be here within the next day or so...

Happy Wednesday!

Every things starting to flow now the glassings lookin great! I use a small 6" paint pan with just enough acetone to cover the roller but I think the vase idea would use less acetone . Think I'll give that a try..

For the record, the words "bud vase" were just used several times on a boat-building thread... Just going to blow the whistle and interject a brief warning here before any man card violations get handed out... Again, you get a pass because its boat-related.... If I here any talk about draperies or perennials, or low-cal recipes.... I'm bringing the hammer and giving you some time in the box....

We clear? Good... carry on...

See below for the roller soaker...

Thank you for looking the other way and disregarding the above mentioned man-card violations, however other possible infractions follow below...

Does light beer count??^^^

As long as it is consumed in large quantities, to make up for its lightness, I believe it is a non-issue, however, if consumed with the intention of decreasing ones girth and weight, it may be construed as being a violation of long standing man-card rules and regulations...one must tread carefully in this area...

And now for what may actually end up costing me several points on my man-card, following are pictures of things not normally associated with boats, but have been suggested as being useful in the reconstructiion of said boats...

Large serving spoon and small measuring spoons used for the application and smoothing of PB, along with the aforementioned "bud vase" attached to its tip-proof wooden base...

And the now highly modified and much improved, Bubble Buster...

The two pieces previously resined and CSM'd awaiting final fitment in their appropriate location...

More to come...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

I do believe that with continued good works on the Bassassin, that most, if not all, violations will go in your 'sealed' file & the penalties will be waived. But you, the BBE & the Bassassin are now appearing on the man-card radar & are subject to closer monitoring & scrutiny.

Good thing it's all GREAT work. The shout-out to iBoats @ the transom also garners a few extra points in your favor. As does the sage advice you freely give others, particularly when it also gets doled out on the slow rebuilds (like mine:facepalm:) and on the newbie & rookie threads:D

The positives outweigh the violations by a heavy margin, so you be in the BLACK! And as PMC said: Carry on....

The base for the vase is a great idea. Thanks--I will have to make one. You have come a long way with your restore and with that, getting me a bit more motivated. I'll have to make the drive down to myjami to personally check your progress. ;)

What I really like is you doing work on the washer and dryer. Betcha that makes the wifey happy! Mine would kill me.

Man, I am glad to be able to give back one teeny-tiny idea to one that so freely and magnanimously gives and gives, thank you!

SP, That looks just like mine. Different mfgs make em in defferent ways. For me, the one GT has works really well with MAT and ours does better with Cloth. Both will work either way.
