Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

OK, first off...hope everyone is safe and sound after the twisters...prayers for all.

Now, on to the almost MAJOR
SCREW.jpg
UP!!!

Tabbed in the transom plate, Thursday...6" wide strips of CSM, then 9" wide strips of 1708...

Except for a few air bubbles, pretty good...

Then it rained and huffed and puffed like crazy for a couple of days...wet vacced the hull twice to get the water out from the multiple leaks in the slowly, but surely shredding tarp...re-propped the tarp half a dozen times...etc, etc...

Saturday, wind is blowing 20-30 MPH and raining off and on, but it finally stopped long enough and ground out the worst air bubbles...then it started blowin and pourin again...

DSCF1681.jpg

Sunday morning... a bit windy, but nice with no rain expected till it feels like raining...
Filled ground out spots with torn pieces of CSM...

DSCF1682.jpg

So far so good...

Getting ready to apply final layer of 1708, measured, cut and fit...

DSCF1683.jpg

Then it happened...

Mixed up a 1250ml batch of resin...applied, and went to use the bubble roller to smooth everything out and wouldn't you know it...when I cleaned it up the other day, apparently I didn't do a good enough job and the Darn thing would not roll...locked up tighter than a drum......

So now the rush is on... DAB, DAB, DAB, DAB, DAB, DAB,...with the chip brush trying to pop all the bubbles...well after both my arms almost fell off, and the thought of aborting the lamination and ripping the 1708 off, I finally managed to defeat the Bubble monster...Yeah, there is still a few dozen micro-bubbles, but I believe it will be good enough...if not, oh well...what's done is done, and that's that...

DSCF1685.jpg

ROOKIE MISTAKES...

Lessons learned...

Check any and all equipment before needing it...

Have a back up...going to buy another roller, JIC...

Anyhow, after the fact, I got the roller freed up, but I am still gonna get another and check before the next lay-up that everything is good to go...

Next up...If the weather holds out...gonna drill an oversized bilge drain hole...fill with PB, then redrill for bilge plug...

I am not going to be using the traditional bilge drain sleeve...instead, I am using a plastic, screw in drain plug, that I had before and really like the fact that the plug unscrews to drain from the outside, yet remains in place...less to lose and forget...

Hope everyone is having a productive weekend...

I bought one of these at the dollar store. It's glass and I fill it with acetone. I stick the Bubble Roller in it and let it soak. I put the "Used" acetone in a coffee can with a lid on it for reuse for this kind of stuff.

Thanks...instead of a battleship, I'd love to someday, if I could ever afford it, slap something like a 250HP on it......LOL

Good Idea WoG, I'll see if I can score something like that...

I keep the used acetone in an old acetone gallon can just for this purpose...

Glad you have it tabbed in GT. Gotta feel good about that. Looks good.

Yessir, it does feel good and thanks

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

And the final effort of the day...

Drilled out the future bilge drain and transom eyelet holes in the transom and bilge drain backer...

DSCF1689.jpg

Put some duct tape the on the outside, after a good acetone wipe, filled with PB...

DSCF1692.jpg

DSCF1691.jpg

DSCF1690.jpg

These will later be drilled in the center, to the correct size of their appropriate fittings, hopefully, completely keeping any water away from my precious plywood...

Then, just for S#!t$ and Giggles, I measured one of the drilled out cores...

Close enough for "Bassassin Werk"...:D

It's Miller Time! and BBQ Ribs, too

Have a fast week everyone...

Well my friend, that's a job you certainly don't have to be a shame of. :):):)
At that stage I felt like a stone was taken of my shoulders, Admire your work and enjoy the feeling.

I must try that wonder mat of yours some day.
Since I have bought a lot of material from my local poly dealer he has promised me to order some samples for me.

Keep on going M8, I will look into this thread of yours ones in a while to see how you progress.

PS, I forgot my roller ones also but it was fixable with a lot of patience, a TV and a small screwdriver.

Thanks Troop, I still feel like I'm Dabbing... my pleasure to try and work out the kinks...if being a guinea pig for the rest of my Iboats buds is what it takes, count me in...;)

Thanks S.P., I sit here with a much deserved belly of yummy goodness and a piece of carrot cake for later...
The weather, heck sometimes only have to wait 2 maybe 3 minutes...LOL...

It is, it is easy...NOT! well sort of...still trying to figure it all out...can be kind of stressful without any assistance, but, I am sure by the time I finish this project, I might have some idea what I'm doing...

Thanks Z, it definitely feels like a milestone has been reached...and yeah, if your talking about the 1708 biaxial cloth, it drinks resin, but lays beautifully...

Oh, and as an aside...just the act of installing, tabbing and layering the transom, has literally made the back of the boat an incredibly solid feeling structure...it has stiffened up the entire rear end of this thing like never before, and there is still a ton of structure to go in...

Agreed on the good work... Laughing, but not commenting, on the other..

Also, don't sweat the bubble roller....thanks to kent and oops I have started torching mine after each session... It burns off the resin and keeps it from getting gummed up... Works like a charm... Plus, playing with fire is more fun than paying in acetone .... (and the two should ever be used together or even near each other by the way...dont ask me how I know that...

Also, the bubble rollers are over rated in my opinion... I have started mostly using the foam roller and chip brushes...

Thanks ~rpm...

And Thanks for the refresher...I had forgotten about the torch method of reviving the bubble buster... You can bet I'll have my torch at the ready, next time...;)

And believe it or not, the Bubble Buster is actually a really good tool, but what I remember is that guys usually use it the wrong way...

Try and apply too much presure and you can actually make the bubble bigger...a light touch is usually all that is required, almost to the point of just barely touching the matting...sometimes I don't even roll with it, but just nudge or push...also I have found that rewetting an area with resin right before hitting it with the BB, works better...

Looking good GT. Once I got my trans wood glassed in was the first time I felt sure that I was going to be able to this fiberglassing thing.

Thanks TDF, I can NOW relate to the feeling...it does seem much closer to a possible completion after this...:)

Hey GT1M. Glad to see I’m not the only one in distress today (lol). It seems we were struggling with the same things at the same time today. We were caught off guard by the heat (quick kick off) and having wetted out our 1708 layer while my step son put in a layer of CSM, the 1708 didn’t want to stick at first. In panic mode, I, like you, thought about pulling off the 1708 and throwing it in the trash. But a bit more resin, the bubble roller (previously resined solid, but fixed), and all yours dabs (dab, dab, dab,…) and we got it down. A few air bubbles, nothing major, but as you said, what’s done is done. We too learned from our mistake.

As for shredding tarps, I don’t know how many we’ve gone through. Why can’t they make an inexpensive tarp that doesn’t shred?

Good to see your progress. I like your description of the PB in the drain plug. I’ll be there in a few weeks.

You know, it seems that when you are not working on the boat, you are at your computer answering posts. You get the prize for fastest responses.

Happy to hear of your progress, Not so happy about your troubles, fiberglass is funny that way...I know exactly what you mean about a decent inexpensive tarp...sheesh! I guess thats what we get for buying stuff from "other than USA"...

And thanks for the prize, yeah I pretty much don't have much of a life outside of Iboats......JK:D...

I just really like keeping up as much as possible with the tons of threads that I am subscribed to, and keep reading new ones all the time...This site is way more entertaining and informative than the CARP that's on TV...

PS- I missed the Dania Flea Mkt., but there's the Miami one coming next month...best part is they moved it from where it was to 10 blocks from my house...
I'd better make it to this one...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Your transom looks great. There is alot of work going into that little peice of wood. (LOL)
I do like to use the roller after i wet out the glass. It helps me from over applying the resin.
I keep a gallon can with acetone in it and let the roller set in the can while I am glassing.
Helps keep the buildup off the roller. I also use a wire brush to clean the roller before the resin sets up.
I also take the screw out of the end of the rollor after each use and clean the parts in the acetone.

But I really like to set fire to it and burn it completely clean.

I like the way you drilled out the holes and filled them back in with PB. I think I will do mine that way.
Keep up the good work.
