Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Just to be clear, this was NOT because you'd been voted off the island! Just wanted to make that clear.

We have decided to keep a couple of the dogs. They followed us home & seem to think we were carrying steak.!??!?!

MMMMM, Steak...woof, woof...

Love the truck, Gus.. Definitely worth saving... Thanks for sharing....

I guess we'll have to blow out the torches, but at least we got to hang out and see your truck...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thanks for puttin up with my thread Hijack and all the encouragement...much appreciated...

And I promise that this was only a few hours of boat time, no more time, than what is absolutely necessary, will be spent on this side project...my dedication and focus remain on the "Bassassin"...

Now I should go and get some snooze time, got some interesting stuff planned for today...and Yes, it has to do with boats...

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

I am getting ready to go out and purchase my fiberglassing supplies and have a couple of things I am confused about...

I have this fiberglass supplier near by...FGCI...

These are the resins they list...

The first one is real cheap, but would it be appropriate for the wet-out, lamination and tabbing in of the boat's structure or should one of the others be used???
1- Cheapest... http://fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.aspx?itemnum=128746&oldItem=128746 ...$99.42/5Gals

2-Premium ISO... http://fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.aspx?itemnum=133372&oldItem=133372 ...$196.52/5Gals.

3-General Purpose...seems the equivalent of USC#435...
http://fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.aspx?itemnum=128777&oldItem=128777 ...$167.35/5Gals.

4-Hi-strength, low shrinkage DCPD...
http://fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.aspx?itemnum=128797&oldItem=128797 ...$182.16/5Gals.

5-Premium Ortho Laminating Resin...
http://fgci.com/bp_viewproduct.aspx?itemnum=128819&oldItem=128819 ...$206.13/5Gals.

According to the US Composites site, they too, have a "cheap" resin, but they do not recommend it for structural work...the next one up the their list is the 435 Resin, which is OK for structure...

CONFUSED!!!

Thanks for any words of wisdom...

PM sent

If you go to that site, you have to download a catalog. They have 'Premium' ISO resin $117/5Gal as well

Mid-Jan 2012, Fiberglass Services in Sarasota Fl ISO premium = $117/pail (5gal) + shipping to other then pickup. You have to download a catalog *.PDF to see pricing. Catalog is winter 2010, but when I called prices hadn't changed 'much', but shipping is now WAY UP!

Hey, they'll probably have a booth at the Miami show. Hit them up if you make it out there! Website says they'll some discounts & stuff at boat shows!

Thanks, I am weighing my options..it looks like the best choice after all is said and done, MIGHT be USComposites...
BUT, and that is one BIG BUT!!!...only if I can place the order and go there and pick it up...they are approximately 160 miles round trip, door to door, which is less than a tank of gas...that would make them the best deal around for me...
They have all the right stuff at the better prices overall...even taking the time out and gas to drive up there, if I get most of my materials from them, I should still come out way ahead of the cost game...
I will keep y'all posted...

FGCI will be at the Miami Boat Show. Stop and talk to them. The manager of the yard where I keep my boat buys all his stuff there and kept telling me to go see them. I did by accident at the Ft Lauderdale boat show. They will be very helpful.

BTW, they have 5 lines of resin and will match us composite's prices on like material. Hate to see you drive 160 miles when you could drive 30.

Not gonna be able to make the show, but I will give them a call during the week and see if they will match USC on the 1708, 1.5oz. CSM, and their equivalent to the 435 resin...talkin a difference of almost 300 bucks, minus 100 for gas and incidentals to go up to USC...but hey, I am gonna try...;)

Yeah, I spent several hours 'surfin the net' yesterday, pricing all three vendors, FGCI, USC, and Fiberglass Services in Sarasota, and calculating fuel/time costs...still haven't made a final decision...too many variables...got to stew on it some more...

If it wouldn't end up costing more than the freight delivery in gas, roundtrip, I would love to take a ride to Louisiana. Been jonesing for some serious crawfish etouffe' and a nice bowl of gator gumbo...mmmm...

But hey, wait a minute...if I could line up several iboaters on the way up and back...

It is almost to the point with 4.00 a gallon gas and climbing, that it is getting prohibitive to even go the 160 miles...
My van only gets about 16MPG, on a good day, so that's around 80 bucks , just in fuel...not to mention time and munchies...

Well Shaggy, you clearly aren't taking Scooby, because then snacks would be more then fuel!

Because of HazMat shipping, I made a spreadsheet & compared 6 vendors across all needed materials & supplies (bubble roller, CSM, 1708, Cabosil, micro-balloons, 1/4" chopped). But I didn't have FGCI in my list. US Comp was easily the low cost provider on everything but the resin like we talked about yesterday. I may need to give FGCI a call & see about the shipping & 15gal of resin. At the other place, I save almost enough to get an extra 5 of resin, compared to the price at US Comp. Only be slightly more after you add the shipping.

I can source acetone locally for <$10/gal. Which amazes me because WalMart has the next cheapest price at $16-17/gal. But I can get a single gallon or 5 at that price, and order as many as I'd like, 3-5day turn around. And it's only 2min from my office.

Have a great end to the weekend! Hope the nice weather heads this way soon!

Wow, you and I are on the same wavelength...I am also doing a spreadsheet type comparison, but only the three vendors that are sort of within driving distance...USC, FGCI, and FSI...

I am trying my best to keep it APPLES to APPLES...

As soon as I have them written up I am going to post them here...of course my shipping costs will be gas/time/munchies...but hopefully it will help others in making a price comparison...

Keep in mind that there are going to be certain variables, such as one vendors product may be named differently than anothers, but provide the same chemical composition, and then again, may not...

That is what makes some of the picking and choosing difficult...

This is not necessarily the end of this, as I am still seeking out other vendors/ connections...

Hope the weather is being nice to all and that y'all are having a fun and productive weekend...

More on this subject soon...
