Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Part 2...

Used the original Tach and Battery Gauges from the Bassassin and a new fuel gauge I had installed in the Bassassin, back when it ran, along with a new Faria Temp gauge I pick up from evil bay for him and threw together a new removable dash for his boat...

So far I have gone through the remaining wiring and traced what is good and what goes to where...
I am currently awaiting the arrival of some electrical supplies, that I also grabbed off of EB, and when those arrive in the next week or so, I will try and get this puppy wired and wrapped up...
Oh and in case any of you are wondering how much I am charging him for all of this, let's just say "I am paying it forward" and he is getting the deal of a lifetime...;)
Mean time, thank goodness, the shop got busy, so I hauled his tub to my house to keep it handy for finishing up...
More as progress evolves...

Then I decided it was time to give my trusty hauler some TLC and spent the better part of Friday afternoon and almost 12 hours on Saturday replacing some much needed safety equipment on my van...
I suppose when the Brake Light and ABS lights come on and you turn left or right and the van wants to keep going straight, it must be time...:facepalm:
Front and rear brakes, front and rear shocks, front suspension bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc...

Now it needs to go to the alignment shop on Monday or Tuesday and it will be done for now...

Alrighty then, that's all I got for now...
Hope y'all are having some great times with your boats and other life, time and money consuming projects...till next time...
Happy "set your clock back an hour" Week...:)

I've already extinguished my fall back hour of extra sleep....

Nice work, and it's always amazing how rewarding paying it forward can be, good on you. Now if it'd just act like super-charged fertilizer around that moolah tree :watermelon:

Have a great week.

Dang GT do you ever take a break? :D It's hard to believe that nice boat was rotted out, rebuilt, then sank. Nice dash and control mount.
Your van will be a magic carpet ride with all those parts!!!!

You better have a cold one and take the evening off!!:joyous:

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Thanks guys...^^^^really makes me feel ...

but what goes on the other side?

Good question...the hole you see on the other panel will have a matching Starboard panel with the speedometer installed...also will leave plenty of real estate for mounting a 12V outlet for a couple of accessories, a place for the VHF microphone clip, any possible additional gauges, etc...
The center panel is getting a new 8 gang, illuminated, rocker switch panel with circuit breakers instead of fuses...
All of the wiring will be pre-wired outside and then "Plug-n-Play" using some molex type plugs, when it gets installed in the console...
The "Hole" [get it?] method to the madness is to be able to service the electrics from the top of the console instead of having to become a contortionist and trying to fit up, in between the console and the very close fitting leaning post, which at my size is like trying squeeze 'Jabba the Hut' through a 6" inspection hatch...

I have reached a low federal reserve point due to a couple of slow weeks at the shop and much needed repairs to my hauler, along with those pesky bills that never seem to stop filling the mailbox, so I have had to put my US Composites foam order on hold for the time being...frustrating? YES!...but as the saying goes...good things come to those who wait...let's just hope its true...

Meanwhile, have a great upcoming hump day, everyone...:D

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

gt not only do guys like you and WOG and anyone else who helps on these forums spend what must be hours looking them over just to help perfect strangers but now you are doing it in real life. I have to say that's an impressive gesture on your part.

Guys like you need to be shrined on the iboats forum hall of fame because honestly where would iboats be without the likes of people like you. keep up the good work

one quick question what did the guy who fixed the boat in the first place do when it sank because of the valve being missing (just curious) id be sick to my stomach if i was him and found out a boat sank. Being a mechanic i know what its like to hold someones life in my hands when im fixing their car

Anyways have a good day :joyous:

Thank you for the very kind words, banshee...

I too, am a ASE certified auto mechanic and AATI certified collision tech so I definitely agree with you about having peoples lives in our hands when working on their cars...to me it isn't just a profession, it is a huge responsibilty...

I was talking to him about just that the other day and when I got to the part about, "What did the guy who did the work say to you?"
He responded, "By the time I got around to calling him, his phone was disconnected, and when I went by the guys house, it was empty."
All in all a very expensive lesson which unfortunately he is still paying for...
Now that I know the "Rest of the story", I am even more motivated to do right by him.

Happy Wednesday!:)

GT not to hijack your thread but you being a mechanic you must have one or 200 horror stories lol. i wish i had a dollar for everytime i had one of THOSE jobs that make ya want to quick the trade. I had one last week it was a t stat on cadillac cts 3.6 liter. Engineers thought it would be a GREAT idea to put steel 1/4 inch bolts about 5 inches long into an aluminum housing.:mad-new: well if it wasnt enough to have to pull the intake to get at it. One bolt broke off flush with the housing. so there i am trying to weld a nut onto the broke bolt and remove it. that didnt work at all. next step was a new housing at the cost of 550 from an aftermaker supplier. what a PITA no room to work. i swore after that job was finished i wouldnt put another wrench on a cts 3.6. thankfully job left all fixed up and hasnt had anymore issues (knock on wood)

I know exactly what you mean...that is why I got myself certified in collision work...got out of working professionally on the mechanical aspect of cars several years ago and have actually found that I enjoy doing collision work way better...not that it is any easier or less back breaking or even that I make better money at it...I just find that most things are much more straight forward than what the engineers decided to do to engine bays...
Don't get me wrong they design some pretty weird and strange ways to put the body of a vehicle together, too...but I can usually take a cut-off wheel, BFSH {BIG ******* Sledge Hammer} or a torch to it and move it out of my way...:laugh:
I have sworn that if I ever meet an automotive engineer, I would first bop him on the head :fish: then, put him to work in the field...busting knuckles, buying hundreds of tools, sweating and swearing his life away...
I completely understand that their mission is to make everything fit together as tightly and as cheaply and as fast as possible, but oh brother, some of the carp they design is beyond belief...

yeah, i know that feeling, too. ex-asme mechanic here. too many stupid ppl, both drivers and the 'golden wrenches' we have around here. i gave it up ~20 years ago.

however, i have found out that this still applies to my current occupation...

there's just something about engineers.... (no offense to any engineers here. :D )

ok, so now im apologizing for the hijacked hijack, but continuing from earlier....

that's gonna be nice. i am anxiously waiting pics of that!

LOL yeah, i get it. that makes perfect sense. i see you follow the KISS system, as many of the rest of us do. :)

as usual, your work is looking good from here.

Re: Love, Necessity and Pride

Hey crew,
Just a gratuitous plug of my new thread in the electrical section to document the work I am doing on my buddy's boat...
JIC anybody wants to peruse what I am up to, while waiting for more progress in this neck of the woods...

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my Brothers and Sisters on this upcoming Veterans Day, who have given so much to defend the Freedoms, both here and abroad, that we hold so dear...God Bless!
