Put that on your HVLP buddy if he want's to shoot the regular primer over the SE. Primer is the same formula as the paint right alkyd oil base? They both will stick the same to the SE.

Thanks for the info on covering the cooking mix. :joyous:

The Rusto says it's an Oil Modified Alkyd.
The Majic says it's an Alkyd Enamel.

I'll leave the choice up to my buddy on whether or not to use the gray Rusto primer.

Man I'm at a loss for you. That sucks. Seems like nothing is working. :grumpy: Only thing I could recommend is switching to Rusto paint. My topside rolled on smooth right out of the can with foam roller and a little of the same hardener.

I know its not an option but seriously this may be the time to run with the beautiful aluminum.;)

Going "au naturel" with the aluminum hull is a fallback position for sure.

Am stripping the console... again.. Hopefully for the last time.

I bought a quart of Rust-Oleum aircraft remover. Works quite well. Temperature is only 69 degrees but the white paint and primer bubbled up in less than a minute.

That's stripping really well because it's fresh paint, not cured and baked on for decades. :)

Yup. I just hope that when all is said and done with this paint job, since it's going to "bake" in my steel garage for awhile, that maybe it'll last long enough to at least go fishing! :fish2:

Forgot to mention... before I stripped the console this morning I dragged a fingernail across that bubbly paint and just about hurt my fingernail! That stuff was plenty hard! ;)

How long after priming with SE should I wait before masking for the color separation?

Guys, I'm still around but my laptop is down. Plenty to report after I get it back.

But here's a teaser. :D

Looks like the whole boat is green, only one thing left to do now. :D

Still no paint. Haven't heard from my buddy today. He's a very busy young man. He lives next door and I just now saw him driving in with one of those giant rolls of hay for his 2 horses. Then he was gone again.

I'm getting antsy. I'm fast running out of time. Realistically, I doubt that I could get the boat finished in time for vacation even if it was completely painted right now. . :grumpy:

I did get most of my laptop back this afternoon except for the screen, which was what was supposed to be replaced. I apparently didn't order the correct part number and we ran into issues. So I ordered another screen this afternoon. And an inverter card as well.

So I have the laptop connected to my home TV. I can use the laptop or the TV but not both at the same time. Sigh. :blue:

Today is Wednesday and I haven't done anything on the boat since Monday morning when I finished up the last spot of primer and touched up the little areas I missed on Sunday. Getting pretty bored sitting around watching TV.

Anyway, here's what I did over the prior few days.

The boy covered up most of the shop to keep the rattle can spray off. When we get to the point that my buddy has his HVLP gun in use, we'll cover even more thoroughly.

This is the gap area at the bow that I needed to fill. I ended up using JBWW because I was pressed for time and my epoxy filler required 24 hours to fully cure. After sanding and primer, it also looked good.

My buddy just got in touch with me to let me know he hadn't forgotten about me. Said he's babysitting a sick horse now. He said if he can't get to me in the next day or so that he'll hit it hard this weekend.

Here's hoping!

Saw the doc yesterday. He referred me to a couple of different specialists.

I may have to cancel our vacation. But that would take some of the pressure off of me about getting the Kingfisher done soon.

Just remember... "Boat restoration should relieve stress not be the source"
That is oh so true for a Boat Restoration Hobbyist/Enthusiast. Alas, I am not that. I'm simply an angler who needs a boat to get on the water and out to the fish. Boat refurbishment/restoration/improvement is but a means to an end for me. I loathe fishing from the bank.

Take today for example. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we went to one of our favorite lakes to wet our lines. The water was WAY down! As in several feet down. Made for some terrible fishing. Ugh.

These folks had to walk their pontoon boat under the bridge in water which was less than knee deep. Even then, they ended up lifting their outboard to stowed position in order to pass.

You sound like me, remodeling/refurbishing by necessity, just to get out on the water. Love your tenacity to get the little details right. You'll be out there catching them up and the grunt work will be just a distant memory.
