First application of Gluvit is done! :D

Had to do it this evening instead of this morning due to weather considerations but I managed to get the starboard seam gooped up from the stern up to rib #11 (or #4 if counting from the bow.)

After application, I immediately got online with my phone (while watching the glue dry haha!) and placed an order for another can of Gluvit. Dunno if I'll end up with extra but I don't want to cheap out and try to stretch it so thin that it doesn't do the job. Hopefully I won't need a second application though.

Tomorrow we continue! :joyous:

Oh boy that stuff is runny as all get out, too much in one application and the stuff wanders off to places it's not needed. It will only go on so thick before it cuts loose and free ranges. So how big was the can?

Ya got that ole hull rockin' and rollin'. That's a good way to let the runny stuff settle in the seams.

I got the small quart sized can based on all the research I'd done online. Sounded like it was going to be sufficient but after the application today I decided to be safe rather than short-supplied. So I ordered another quart.

And this morning during the storms I read of folks who applied several coats of the stuff as well as rebucked rivets and still had leaks! :faint2:

Yah. I wanted to be sure that the angles were good enough to allow the Gluvit to seep down into the cracks as best as possible. Will be rotating it several more times over the next week as I go from section to section.

Finished up my stock of Gluvit today with just a little bit left over. Will save that and add it to the new stuff which has already been shipped. Should be here in a couple days. Maybe sooner if I'm lucky.

Gluvit smells like dead fish! There, I said it. :puke:

So this morning I mixed up 3 more applications of the gooey good stuff before running out. Got the starboard side done other than the bow (angle wasn't right for that) and much of the port side as well. When the new stock of Gluvit arrives I'll have plenty to finish up everything with leftovers to boot.

Anywho, boat work will be on hold till the Gluvit shipment arrives but I'll work on the trailer in the meantime. Nothing special there though. Just some touch-ups on a couple rusty places. Grind, paint, done. Won't repaint the whole thing.

Today's obligatory pic. Can't see anything but there's Gluvit in there!

Yep, super smelly stuff, but for me finishing Gluvit was like a milestone... Getting the deck installed was another... Theres always a reason to feel good while building boats!

Indeed, I'm enjoying making these milestones too. Not being a restorer hobbyist, my goal is to get the boat into fishing condition as soon as I can! Went shore fishing 2 days ago and ripped serious lips at the lake. Then went saltwater dock fishing this afternoon and got nothing. Evens out, I reckon.

Got home from fishing and found an ad on CL for a 1989 9.9hp Evinrude which was advertised as "runs great" for $250 and the ad was only 47 minutes old. But it was 80 miles away! Was getting up to call about it when my neighbor buddy called and asked me to go to a "cruisin' night" car show at a local Hardees. So I did that. When I got home an hour or so later, the motor had been sold. Ah, well. I'll keep looking.

Car show pix attached.

Worked on the trailer this morning. Sanded and primed the worst spots then painted them with a variety of leftover rattle cans in black. Some gloss, some satin and some flat!

But it was zero cost so I'll see how it looks in a day or two. Might be tempted to repaint it with gloss or flat all over but am not sure at this point. More work, more time, more cost, more time outside in the heat and humidity. Most of it won't show anyway. We'll see. :noidea:

Went out after sunset last night and took a look at the trailer paint job. The outdoor light was nice and even and showed that the paint is pretty splotchy!

Too bad I used the high gloss in a few spots. It was really noticeable and accentuated the splotchy look. The satin and flat looked fine together. Of the three types, the satin finish looked best. Guess I'll buy some more cans of that and paint the whole trailer this time.

For the fenders you'll need to measure across the tire at it's widest point since 12" is the wheel diameter it's tough to say for sure if they'll fit. 21" wide should cover but the way the new fender attaches to the trailer may be different and need some bracket mods.

Sanded, primed and repainted the trailer this morning. Used two full rattle cans of Rustoleum satin black and ran completely out. Will need to get another can to touch-up some light spots.

Measured the tires and the overall diameter is 20 inches so I guess I'll keep looking for a larger sized set of fenders. :joyous:

Received my new can of Gluvit last evening and applied 2 batches this morning. Will let that cure for a couple days. I have to head out of town tomorrow morning so won't be working on the boat.

Still have to Gluvit the extreme bow and stern sections which will require tilting the boat around quite a bit. But, with any luck it should all be finished in 4 or 5 days, then I can put the boat back on the trailer for another leak test.

Haven't found the paint I need for the trailer. WalMart was all out. Dangit. Haven't looked for trailer fenders but do know the correct size now at least.

Making progress. :)

Progress!

Applied Gluvit to the starboard bow this morning after getting the boat positioned to allow best flow of the gooey stuff into the crevices. And even though I made up a small batch of Gluvit, I had plenty left over at first. So, I sat there and listened to tunes and the birds and watched the glue working.

In the darkest area of the bow seam, I could actually tell that the Gluvit was slowly seeping into the cracks and crevices about every 5 minutes. I'd reapply more Gluvit and watch and wait. Then I'd hit it again. By the time I finished up, that crevice had been glued at least 5 or 6 times. And I had very little Gluvit left over after that. Hopefully that'll take care of all the little leaks!

Next step for tomorrow is to reposition the boat onto its port side and do the same thing. Once that's done, I'll raise the bow and do a couples spots at the stern. That means two more days (weather permitting) and I'll be able to get the boat back onto the trailer and do another leak test.

Now - I really, really didn't want to do it, but am considering painting the boat. It's all apart now and painting would be the next logical step after the Gluvit job and transom repair. BUT! Painting the boat could easily add $500 or more to my costs plus another month of down time. Neither of which are appealing to me. And the cost goes against the frugal part of this fix-up. Especially since they're not likely recoverable. Further, with a nice pretty exterior, the boat would look kinda funky with a basic and frugal interior. And fixing up the interior could add another $500 onto the overall project cost. Spending $1000 just doesn't add up for this project. I dunno.

Finally, the original goal for this project was to get the boat working and on the water ASAP so that we could go fishing. And in 2 or 3 years we'd sell it and break even or maybe come out on the plus side financially. Then we'd buy either a brand new boat or one that is only a couple years old at most.

On the "flip side" (nyuk nyuk!) my wife doesn't mind the cost and would really like the boat paint to match our truck. I've done some photo editing and indeed, the boat could look really nice when matched up to my F-150. Sigh.

Thoughts please!

Anyway, here are pix from this morning. Plus the truck/boat photos with current color and the edited paint matching efforts with different bottom color options below the spray rail.

You could always just color paint the sides to match and leave the bottom of the hull naked. Then you could paint it at anytime and keep it on the trailer. :noidea:
