Got as far as I can with the carbs. Need to get parts before reassembling.

Moving on to other stuff...

I can't recall if I showed the throttle control for the 50 Merc from the nasty glasser donor, but it's in bad shape.

How about that hinge? Creative, right?

The good news is that I have an identical unit that I can use. I'm going to CANNIBALIZE it from the Chieftain motor!

What I'm going to do is to move parts around and make one good working unit from two broken units. The Chief throttle control doesn't have a key and the engage/disengage lever/switch at the top of the throttle handle doesn't work. But the KF donor motor control does have those parts, so I'll combine them all and have a working throttle for the KF. Since the Chieftain will have twins, it's going to need a different throttle control anyway. I knew that when I bought it and have been planning on doing this swap/combo thing since I bought the Chief. :D

Carbs look great, nice job cleaning them up.

On the float bowl I would repair it with JB Weld either the steelstik or waterweld. Read the JB FAQ if you're concerned about it being in contact with fuel.

"When fully cured, J-B Weld is completely resistant to water, gasoline, and about every other petroleum product or automotive chemical."

T minus 26 days and counting.

Today I made a parts run to get carb stuff. Twice. Because I forgot to add something to the list.

But I got all the carb gaskets and a pair of new floats. When I took the second carb apart, the float was partially filled with fuel, so I decided to just replace the float in both carbs. I also bought a new fuel filter assembly. The filter element in the old one was split open and the screw mount at the top of the assembly had broken off.

This afternoon I started trying to figure out how to get the shifter problem solved. Messed with it some and finally realized that I am over my head on this one.

So I hollered for help over in the Mercury forum on this thread.

That shifter is a mess!

And yesterday my wife finally started to twig to what I'm up to.

She asked if I was pushing so hard on the Mercury repair because I was hoping to bring the boat with us on vacation. I was evasive and started talking about parts and how much work it is cleaning carbs and just waited until her eyes started to glaze over.

She has no idea that I'm trying to get the boat fully refurbished before we go. ;)

I think she'll be really shocked when she comes home from work one day and the KF is turtled inside the garage and the new decking is scattered everywhere. :D

Lunch break! :pizza:

The boy is in the process of pulling the trolling motor off. He got it unbolted okay and now needs me to remove the electrical wiring. I'll be shortening the shaft so that it suits the KF better. That's the "official" position I'll take if my wife asks any questions. Still trying to maintain stealth mode here. :eyebrows:

But of course, the TM has to come off so that it (and the boat!) can be cleaned and painted! :D

I'm still cleaning carbs. I know, I know, I'm slow.

Maybe my process is too detailed?

I first used carb cleaner for this which helped a little. Then used the chem-dip, which helped more. Next was a vinegar dip to clear the corrosion in the passages. And finally me with a toothpick and q-tip to get the final bitsy stuff out.

Trolling motor has been dismounted.

The sun came out and it got hot outside so we're indoors again. Will go back this evening and assemble one carb for sure. May have an option for the problematic float bowl. Maybe. So I'll wait until that's resolved before assembling the second carb.

Plenty of other stuff to do while waiting! ;)

One carb thoroughly cleaned, reassembled and ready to remount! :)

Reassembly started. 7.jpg

So I was working along, following the manual and it says there are two types of floats; a black one and a white one. The black one is adjustable but the white one is not, it can only be replaced.

Just exactly where does this brown one come into the picture? Yeah, yeah... it changed color from white to brown by absorption from the fuel.
11.jpg

HOWEVER! The manual does say the white is non-adjustable.

Except this note was included with the new WHITE float that I bought. So I adjusted the non-adjustable float per the included spec sheet! 12.jpg

Anyway, I got it all back together and it's good to go at this point. 13.jpg

Looks good as new, so you still waiting on those slow pokes over at the Merc forum to get back to you?

Could be.

I do have a line on a parts motor. But I dunno... spending money on a used engine that has parts I need is no guarantee that the parts are good. The carb bowls might be as corroded as mine. The motor is also 70 miles away but I'll be down that direction tomorrow morning anyway. I'm tempted. And conflicted!

I have a doc appointment this morning which will take up much of my day.

Gonna check into that donor motor while I'm out though, so maybe that counts towards boat work?

With any luck, the donor motor thing will work out for me. Here's hoping.

Man, I hate Photobucket.

Anyway, I'm sitting in the hospital awaiting an I-V infusion. They're brewing the concoction now. I'll be here awhile.

I texted the guy with the donor motor and he said it's still available. Will contact him when I'm done here so we can try to meet up.

That's the motor in my prior post. It's a 40 horse but looks like it uses the same carbs. Might have other good stuff on there too.

Dangit. Can't upload straight to iboats and can't change my settings in Photobucket from my phone. Aggravating!

Just got a text from the donor motor seller. He got rear ended in traffic. We'll try to reschedule after he deals with that.

Home again. And glad for it! :)

Here's the donor motor I'm hoping to check out. It's a 40HP not a 50, but that carb float bowl sure looks like mine! Seller says he has other parts as well.

Got the second carb cleaned up this evening. Not going to assemble it until I know for sure what's gonna happen with that donor motor.

I took this pic before I finished cleaning the carb.

Is that red goop Loctite of some kind? It sort of flakes off when scraped. Acts more like a sealant than a thread locker.

Should I replace it where it's missing? Or maybe use real Loctite?

If you use red locktite on those plugs you'll never remove them again, that's a type of thread sealant that they also use on the welch plugs.. I used teflon tape on my plugs that didn't use fiber washers and they sealed up. Just don't put the tape on the inside end of the plug so it can come off and get into a jet or plug something up.
