So, when you pick up the hobby of rocketry next, how soon do you think it will be before you are working for NASA? You sir, are one talented and motivated individual. I've said that before, but it bears repeating. ;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i really wish i could show you guys what i am getting into lately.

the latest boat needs everything.

hull repair....transom repair. (this includes possible dual transom hole cut outs including crankshaft centreline measurements.
replacement of all electronics.....motors...drives....transom plates...inner and outer.......this is the true meaning of total boat restoration.

ole opps has been asked to do it all.
the time line is 45 days.
ill squeek pics in where and when i can.....this is really cool

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

lol.....with the money im making grinding all day i would be better off on unemployment insurance .......collecting cheques and sitting in mexico on a beach !.

the repairs i am doing are well worth 10-15k per boat.....but if i charge that ...they cannot make a profit form buying the boats and everybody looses.....

here is a link to the blue water i just built......

http://classifieds.castanet.net/showproduct.php/product/907650/cat/297

i cant go into the repairs i did on this one.....but it sure looks great now.
ill get pics of the regal up as soon as i can.....that is a real mini yacht with all the trimmings.

as far as me getting a kid to grind.....id love to....but the grinding im doing is crucial to the repair and fairing.....it will take 10 boats for a kid to get on the same page as far as what i want. so im better off doing it my self.

i have a fair amount of glassing to do on this big boat....so im concerned about the temp out side....i may have to build a tent under the boat and pour the heat to it.
the owner has agreed with my restoration plan for the boat and the time line....he wants the boat to be floated by the kelowna boat show, as this is where he intends to sell it. as well as a few more of the craft i have built.

let me tell ya....im having a ball !

WOW....What a thread. I just got done reading all of this (took 9 days) and here we are on it's 3 year anniversary.

Thanks to oops for the wealth of information. This thread has inspired me to take on new projects with my own boat, in my quest to make it one of kind. Nothing like what you have done, but you have proved anything is possible.

Can't wait to see more and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to the one and only Hull Extension Thread.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

thank you fish foot.

geez..... dont know what to say...

when i started this thread i thought the restoration would take a few months.
i think the time line i gave for the extension was three weeks. !

i can happily say....i could easily do the extension now...in three weeks :D

its the third anniversary of this thread.
so far...this thread is hands down the largest thread in i boats history....even surpassing the iconic "hotd".

at this time i would like to say thank you to all of those that gave freely of thier techinical expertise.
this thread is one of the best all around info gathering threads on iboats.
from the extension...to fiberglassing to gellcoat. to boat systems...to motors..props drives......its all here....
one of my main things i wanted to accomplish on this thread was, to let YOU understand...that a guy with NO KNOWLAGE OF BOATS can read...learn....and realize that ....YOU CAN DO ANYTHING TO YOUR BOAT YOU WANT TO.
its your boat.....and its ment to have fun with....so have fun :)

i would also like to thank all of the moderators here ....my friends that have passed, and the current team......for making this the best boating forum on the net....where any one can ask a stoopid question ....and not be scorned.
....also to bruno.....for giving us iboats forums....to don...bill, johnny, mike, austin, rob, brent ...and to jody.......if not for them this build would have died a long time ago.

oh....and a special kick in the azz to kenny...my buddy that is not an iboater....but the guy that first planted the seed of the theme of the boat a long time ago....

cheers my friends......

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops, I haven't posted here before, but I became obsessed with your project from the beginning. In the past 2 weeks, I have put aside all other projects and spent the time to learn from your experiences and those of others who have shared theirs. Amazing!

I bought an older boat to which I have made a number of minor modifications and multiple repairs. In addition to replacing multiple engine parts and fighting with carburetors and propeller selection, I've torn out my deck, replaced the pitted fuel tank, replaced parts on the engine and even created an under deck cooler to keep my Corona's properly iced. ;-)

From your posts, I've learned that some of the projects that I've done, should have been done better. My intent was always to do it right, but my ignorance of proper products and technique caused me to fall short of that goal. The good news is that now I know how. The bad news is that now I've got to rip out some of what I've done and do it right!!! You deserve thanks, at least from me, for showing me how it should be done right!

...heading to the garage now...cracking a Corona. I may just sit for a bit and make motor boat sounds before getting started. ;-)

Respectfully,
Mike

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

im just about done the regal....another week (i am really having fun glassing in cold temps....im using the cold to my advantage, so i am able to do many layers and the gellcoat all in one shabang)......after that....we are going after a 2010 natiuque.

got my fingers crossed for that one....i will have 30 days for a total hull rebuild..inside and out...its far worse than the bluewater

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

this quote was done by ondarvr on another thread.......i want to save this quote because it is total truth......so im posting it here where it wont dissappear....

IBOATS QUOTE OF THE YEAR

ondarvr said.....

The method used in the commercial building of anything is normally not the best method, but is one that works..and can work well, but like anything, it can always be done better when more time and money is spent.

YD and I have discussed this before, the "what method or products should be recommended" question. We came to the conclusion that depending on the circumstances there isn't really a right or wrong answer.....should you use the best plywood that is special ordered and imported from a far off land, or should you use the cheap stuff from Lowes. Well there isn't one good answer, it just depends what the objective is for the project. So when several different methods or products are suggested its up the person doing the project to decide what may work best for their situation.

My view is that most of the boats discussed here are purchased for a few hundred bucks or less and the budget to fix them is even less. The owner wants to get out on the water fairly soon and spend as little money as possible. Plus these aren?t the type of boats that a person keeps for a long period of time, nor are they of any value when fully restored. If the owner really likes boating they will typically upgrade in a year or two, if they don?t like it as much as they thought, then the boat will be sitting under a tree in the side yard for the next decade. In either case paying top dollar for the best materials available seems like a waste to me. Even with the low cost products the repairs will last for many many years if done correctly and with some care and attention to detail.

On the other hand some of the boats discussed are going to be kept for a very long time, frequently these owners have owned several boats and have a good idea of what they want and plan on keep it for a long time. In this case it pays to upgrade the products and methods because there?s a much better chance it will pay off.

Its up to the owner to accurately describe (if possible, as things do change) what they want as an outcome and the budget to get there. Good suggestions can then be made to help guide them in that direction. Whether they use Rustolium or Awlgrip is up to them, letting them know how to correctly use both products is what?s important. Safety is also important and shouldn't be overlooked on any project.

Very well said. Everyone is going to have different objectives, goals, and ideas on how to build their boats. We should all be supportive, offer as much help as we can, and help get these boats on the water.

Nice job Ondarvr, very well put.
