Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I'm waiting for a grinder dust collector to get her from Amazon.com next Monday ( sooner if I'm lucky ) so I can finish grinding out my boat and get that center stringer done... I made some 1/4 ply deck templates so I have something a little more "solid" to work with than the foam I used to create the first set of temporaries....I'm stoked to get some real work done on my boat this year. I might even get it wet ( sans interior or motor ) just to make sure I'm in good shape.

Good luck with the Upholstery Ward, you get less "do overs" with sewing vinyl. ;)

the sewing machine i've been using doesn't have a walking foot. Keep in mind, when your sewing the vinyl...the backside of the the bottom piece of vinyl (when sewing it) will be against the stepper plate, that will move the vinyl along nicely

im planning on doing some fairly intricate sections.
as much as 8 layers. do you find that the top layers move or "spread" when using the standard setup?
like as far as the piping between sections?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok......where do i start.......

first of all ...........all the things i had to do yesterday turned out to be juuuust a little amitious for the 12 hour day.......

when i had left the boat it was finished to a 400 grit......that means i needed to go 600....800....1000....and finally up to 1500.....

i needed to find a way to do it fast but through

gellcoatingset7001.jpg

after hours and hours of sanding....this was the boat with a 800 grit finish

gellcoatingset7002.jpg

gellcoatingset7003.jpg

the side were starting to come out

Very nice work......I like the two handed sanding.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

im really having a problem with photobuckets bulk uploader.....it doesnt work so i have to upload everything pic by pic.....

i was uploading these last night.....

this is going back to the coupler fiasco that don s and robj bailed me out of.

the standard coupler these days is a triangular style that bolts to the outer edges of the flywheel.

001-2.jpg

the older style used for pre 80's applications was a kinda mushroom/bell shaped peice.
the older style is a little longer allowing the drive shaft to be inserted farther into the coupler....this is only by a half inch or so...

002-2.jpg

if you notice in the above picture.....the bell shape of the coupler does not allow standard crank shaft bolts to be used.

they actually used grade 8 studs for this job...
do you think the studs are easy to find?
on top of that ....there are 2 length of stud sizes...we needed the longer ones.
it took us all day on the phone and driving around to get 6 studs.

004-2.jpg

the shorter thread end of the stud goes into the crank shaft.....

the longer end is for the flywheel and the coupler and the washer and the nut.

well....the problem with the studs.....is that they nust be installed into the crank at 55 lbs of torque. so ....that means you have to double nut them....torque them to 55 then slide the fly wheel on....hammer that into place....install the coupler...then fit the washer and nut in a tiny area and torque that to 55....

after i got all the correct pieces ... it took me about 10 minits per stud to install....then another 10 per stud to finish with the coupler due to limited access with the open end wrench....so to install the coupler and flywheel....it took over 3 hours (including beer and cuss breaks) to install these parts.....

man am i glad they work :)

ok....ill have more updates on the latest when i get back from the shop

cheers

a few of mine are 8 layers thick...but you don't sew them all at once...you build up one layer at a time...

i'm almost done with my video....i think i captured every aspect...i still have to shoot the part with stretching the vinyl over the foam and ply base...

i'm planning on stitching all the videos into one and put it up on youtube or photobucket, and then link it on here...

one suggestion....buy plenty of needles
