Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok....i think we are up to most of last nights work......

prepping the deck for gellcoating.

OH....before i forget.....the deck was...at that point...offically down and in permanant........that meant i could cross off the list of things i had written down a few weeks ago.....the list was supposed to be a one day job....

deckingset7026.jpg

there is still two things on the list i need to do......lift the cap....and add the backing plate for the hull/cap rivets.....(ill be using stainless bolts instead)

deckingset7027.jpg

with the deck all buttoned down and fully tabbed in place......i wanted to add a layer of gellcoat to the floor.....this is just to protect the deck from top side water intrusion, and to provide a cleanable surface for when im killing fish......(dont want blood and guts on the carpet)

i needed to make the deck totally smooth......any minior high spots were ground down. the edges of the big 1708 were ground and more or less feathered back. the glass was given a light sanding. during this time i aslo "felt" the floor with a gloved hand to make sure there were no snags...just smooth deck

deckingset7039.jpg

then i forgot that the ski and beer hatches had not recieved there final finishing layers of glass......

so again the csm was cut...with a layer of veil.

deckingset7046.jpg

both the locker and the cooler were prepped.

deckingset7045.jpg

when i was at the store earlier in the week i had found some old gellcoat i had kicking around....it was white....so....it was mixed with oops suder dooper mixer for 15 mins....then mixed with some more current gellcoat.and blended for another 10 mins.....i just made a rig,,,and hung the drill with the egg beater in it in the can and hit lock on the trigger and opened a beer !

as with glassing....every surface needs to be cleaned and prepped....so on my hands and knees with a rag and some aceitone.....i swabbed the deck.

then it was painting time !

as with glassing....gellcoat needs mekp......so that means ...as soon as the mekp hits the gellcoat you are against the clock.....sorry i didnt get pics of the process.

deckingset7049.jpg

i just used a fuzzy roller and a paint tray......and laid it on thick.....

deckingset7050.jpg

the first coats were to fill the thin finishing veil voids...then after thats done....just go for it...

i had to leave a space for the gas tank mount i will be installing and biulding tonight....i wanted glass on glass....not glass on gell....but the area still needed to be gelled...

deckingset7052.jpg

gell coat ...is not a paint....but a "coat"...you apply it like paint...but thats where it ends......it is really thick and does not flow like paint....what you see is what you get.....so if you want to gell your deck.....be prepaired to do three thick coats....and sand...sand...sand....

the purpose of this coat was just to protect the glass....not make it look pretty.....when you get right up to this work...it looks like a "bubba" job....

(NO OFFENCE INTENDED BUBBA...:D)

ill be adding another thick coat tonight....as well as doing the bilge area and the final four feet of the deck and transom.....

thats a big job for one night...but ill see what i can get done....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

NOTE>>>>>>>

there has been a lot of people pm'ing me and asking about gellcoating a deck lately.......

the steps above are only a part of what you would need to do to properly gell a deck......my purpose to do it is different than yours....i will have carpet over mine...so it does not have to look perfect.

for a perfect gellcoated deck.....sand the finishing veil as smooth as possible.....it was suggested to use fairing compound.....you can....the better the prep the better the job.

but i would just sand the first layer of gellcoat...(make it thick) and apply another layer......the roller will give you a natural non slip surface....there is some sharp preaks...but a quick 600 grit will take them down.

depending on how you do it and how much you pay for gellcoat.....the job cost will be around 200 bucks. and take you approx 8 hrs labor...not including cure time.

cheers

Preeeeety.

Almost makes me want to go through the gelcoating to do my next boat.

Probably I'll just get the deck smooth and then use some gray or off white bed liner though. No carpet for me, so it's gonna have to be as smooth as the outer hull beforehand. I'm gonna buy stock in 3M I think... they have an employee discount program too... hmmm.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

actually.....its a working hull right now....the transom plate will get cut out in a few days, then the motor install.....i want the sea tryals to be before mid november......

the interior design will be a month.....the dash another month....finishing the cap to look pretty...a month........

the rest is up to the contractors like the paint...(stickers) and uph.....with a really good effort....my stuff can be done by the end of jan.....that gives all of feb and march for the sub contractors....

that will easily put me in the boat show in april for the unveiling.

heeee heeee heee and all this from a guy that thought i could glass the extension in three days.....:D with my latest one day list taking a month :D :D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well.....i didnt get as far as i wanted to on the boat....as after a "chat" i didnt get to work on it till 9 pm.

my job was to cut the tank supports....fit them....glass them....install them...gellcoat them.....then gellcoat the deck and motor cage area...

due to the limited time...i just got some done.

just a side note.......for anyone gellcoating their deck......it is far slipperyer than i had wanted....even with the rough finish.......my suggestion is to use the fuzziest roller you can find.....and also use the non slip additive that you can find in gellcoat stores....ist kinda like a sand that you mix with the gellcoat....

because of the old gellcoat i had....(2 years at least) im not sure if it was waxed or unwaxed....but with the old glass coated, dust infested...resin stepped in running shoes i am working in.....it was really slippery.

ok......

the first thing i had to do was sand all the rough edges in the bilge....stringer knees...and other areas, so i wouldnt cut my hands on any ragged glass when reaching in the bilge.........big grinder made quick work of that job....then it was acietone....

and gellcoat.

deckingset8001.jpg

the spot you see in the middle that i missed is where the transom will be cut out....so it wont be there.

deckingset8002.jpg

the small hole you see is a hull drain from under deck.

deckingset8003.jpg

every little pin hole was covered...so no water intrusion could get past the gellcoat.

deckingset8004.jpg

the area foward was a little harder to get at....as the uncovered part...is actually under the bulkhead.....you cant see it from the top looking down...and i needed to keep the area open so water could drain.

deckingset8005.jpg

im really looking forward to tonight on the boat......i want to get the gas tank mounts in and glassed....possibly even gellcoated......my hockey team is playing on the radio....so as long as the circ saw is not going....i can hear it..!.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Ward, you almost have me convinced that I need to regelcoat my hull. It just might work better than painting it since I've got so many bugs flying into the paint that I've done already....I'd have to sand the gel coat smooth anyway! :D
