Hey jserb, ya gotta check out this guys project Scarab. Also check out the price!
Yeah, I can see he dumped a little too much in it , but would be interested in what he gets!

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/boa/808754968.html

That doesn't seem like a bad price. The three boats (photos) that I posted were all listed between $40 & 45,000.

Before you start pumping huge $$ into this thing, make sure you have the title, or otherwise you may be building a boat for someone else. Again before you start, you really need to consider the impact of going over budget. If the well runs dry at $8k, and there is absolutely no more $$, then I would not even consider starting, because I guarantee you it will be more. Be prepared. I am speaking from experience, been there, done that.

If you do it properly you will have a nice boat in the end, but it will definitely be over budget. They always are.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

This sounds like it will be an interesting project to follow. I am curious to see what the final $$ figure is. Personally, I'm hoping he does it just 'cause I usually route for the underdogs. :D I think it is doable if the OP has the skills necesary and the time available and follows the basic rule of any construction/renovation project:

Good, Fast, Cheap - Pick any TWO. :D

If he has the time to wait for deals, and the time to put in the labour himself I think he can get close to his budget figure. Having incriminating photos of a good marine mechanic can save alot of $$ too. :D:D:D

Good luck!

i still think this is a money pit without a sufficient budget. could be great, no doubt but not cheap if re-sale is ever an issue.

there's a big difference between this:

and a hull with rotten stringer(s) and this set-up

all the pics look great so far...what's the reality on one with beat-up engines and leftover parts?

...

... yes! a $39,300 difference in the price of the boats.

If you look at the rest of my posted motors, there is also a really nice set of Evinrudes. All were only examples, for those that kept saying it can't be done, or that he won't find motors for less than $10,000 a piece.

As far as the rotted stringers, lets hope he doesn't have to deal with those, but ...

Some see the glass half empty, some see the glass half full in life.

Remember he says he needs to buy 2 motors, fix stringers, and all the controls and electronics.

My guess is the transom will also need work. All this for $8k??? No way. His West Marine estimate is $3 k alone. IMO he would be doing a great job if he can get the boat together ready to go without engines for under $8k. Or you can get a pair of Eska 7.5 hp for a couple of hundred. Just joking. There are better and cheaper places to buy boat materials than West. They tend to be more expensive.

Those Evinrudes are over $7k alone which blows the rest of the budget out of the water.

Another point, the previous owner determined that the boat was not worth fixing and decided to strip it, sell the parts and get rid of the hull. I would be very suprised if it did not require work. My guess is there may be rott issues.

This is not an issue of glass half full or empty. It is an issue of knowing what you are getting yourself into before you start. No doubt it can be a great boat when completed, the only question is the cost. Not being negative, just realistic.

Have a great day.

Rob.

yah but hes getting his estimates out of west marine.. . he could get plenty of deals.. like OP's cleats for cheap.. west marine is one of the more expensive stores at least in ct. i can find he same part $10 cheaper across the street from that store.. this project isn't going to be done in a month so he's got plenty of time to find those deals. and the members here are more than glad to help find stuff as you can already see by the search for motors

I agree that $8k isnt a realistic budget but I did notice 2 things you mentioned. You love boats and have a wife... whenever Im in a situation where I really want something and need her advice/approval, I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS underestimate :D.

Ive restored a few things in the past, a couple boats but mostly classic muscle cars. Each one was a labor of love and went over budget. When I sold them after a few years Its was hard if not impossible to recoupe my investment. But for me it wasnt about the money.

As long as you realize this project can and will go over budget and have enough to get started, I say go for it. Theres something about turning the key and cruising around in something that was once labeled 'junk' and has been restored by you that makes it all worthwhile.

Good luck on your project and remeber the key to a flexible budget is keeping the wife happy and involved. ;)

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

this is going to be an interesting thread........time is the key......if the op can store the vessel and be able to work on it.....a 30 foot shop is expencive.....and the standard garage is too small.

a little bit here and a little bit there.....makes it eayser to handle.
