Outboard motors are still expensive, especially when you need two 200+hp motors, and one should be counter rotating. That means you need a matched pair, otherwise, if both rotate clockwise, the torque steer will be very strong.

Best deal on a 200hp from iboats is this 200hp counter rotating USED 2005 Merc for $9,719.00. That blows the whole 8000 budget right there.

6864.jpg

I did find a 1996 Johnson Ocean Pro 200hp rebuilt for $6000, but thats just one outboard.

Ebay has 200hp Mercs for $1800 each with blown powerheads.

I think you better do a more serious job of researching the cost of powering this boat and then adjust your budget accordingly. I'm not saying you can't do it on $8K, I'm sure if you look hard enough you will find a pair of 1970 mercs or johnsons that are all worn out but running for about $2000. But I wouldn't power my boat with motors of unknown reliability.

Just something to think about.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Woulda, Shoulda, & Coulda, doesn't help the man now, he bought the boat. All that will be accomplished, will be to drive him off the board. He will just move to other sources for support and help. This would be sad to see iboats start to head in this direction.

If OOPS had listened to all that said he was crazy, we would not have had such a great source of entertainment, but also the inspiration, and technical information, that his rebuild has and is suppling us with, would also be gone.

What he needs now, is support, not I told you so. That he will tell himself a thousand times before the project is over. :D

I only looked for about 5mins and found this, but I will keep my eyes open for you.

Not going to be the fastest on the water but ...

What you get for your $6300 (plus shipping). Look closely, both outboards have fins mounted on them, and they appear to be mounted backwards. I would have lots of questions for the seller....

This is the way every fin I ever saw was mounted...

You have a picture of the Doel Fin I think.

I think those on the motors are LALIZAS LZ Hydrofoil gull winged stabilizers, and that is how they look.

They are not as common in the States, as in other parts of the world, but what ever.

It should take him just about as long to remove them, if he decided to buy, as it took me to find the motors, about 5min.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

While I was looking at boats on E-Bargin, I found a couple of more. These two were "buy it nows". There were others, but the auction is running, so end price is unknown.

For sale is a pair of 1991 Evinrude 200 horsepower 2-stroke outboards. These take-offs have low hours. They are counter-rotating and come with stainless steel propellers. They have 25 inch shafts.

They have many recent updates including:
new electronic packs,
new water pumps,
new thermostats
and new flywheels.

These outboards run great and are ready for pickup.

or

Twin 150 HP Evinrude outboards counter, rigging, props

You are bidding on a pair of 1994/1995 150 hp counter rotation 25 inch shaft outboards with tilt and trim. Serial numbers 03941105 and 03655951. The port motor is a 1994 and the starboard is a 1995. These come with all the gauges, controls and stainless props seen in the pictures. The props are OMC Viper 17 pitch in good shape. We will also send the key switch panal, harnesses, control cables, fuel filters and mounting bolts. You will have everything you need to install on your boat, except you will need your own steering and battery. The motors have had new non VRO fuel pumps installed so you will need to mix oil in your gas. These are coming off of a 25 foot Wellcraft Coastal/walk around cuddy. These will plane the boat in its own length and cruise very well at 4000 RPM as seen in the pictures. These were bought as a remanufactured pair 4 or so years ago and lift kept. I am the second owner since then. These have been very dependable and have taken me and my family on long day trip trips as we are a couple of hours to the beach. We are going to install a new large Yamaha 4 stroke and therefore are offering these at a great starting bid. We will crate these for $200.00 and shipping should be around $500.00 in the eastern US. We would also consider delivery for gas money. Local pickup is welcome. Our zip is 34223 and the crate will weigh about 900 pounds.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Its getting to be end of season for a lot of the US. There will be much better buys now than in the spring. So if you want motors, you should pick out a pair in the next 4 weeks or so. It looks like if you shop around and settle for less HP, you should be able to get a good pair of outboards with controls delivered for around $5k 7k or so. But you better hurry, come spring they will be 20-50% more.

And it look like Snapping Turtle is right about the fins, I stand corrected.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

I'd jump on those Johnsons for a boat like he has in a heart beat if I had the money set aside for it already. No point in scrimping on the motors, very rare to get an AWESOME deal on a set of motors like he's going to be after.

Good luck with the project though. If you are on a stretched budget ( my favorite boat name for oops! ), plan on it taking a couple of years to find those deals....

One thing I've noticed is that you will miss out on a deal and get bummed, but if you keep watching, another one...possibly better will be right behind it. Don't get ants in your pants and jump on the first set of motors you see for sale, you have plenty of time to find motors, etc.

Your right about the prices dropping at the moment. He's got a window of about 4-6 weeks now. After that the boats go into winter storage and disappear till next spring. The next time you see some of them the owners will be trying to recover the winter storage cost in the sale price.

In Germany you also see many people buying boats just for the vacation season, as soon as it is over, the boats & motors go right back on the market for 40-50% less than they were in the spring. These people are those that have in the past chartered, and over the years realize they can buy, use, and resale in one season, for less than a couple of weeks in a charted boat. They count the money lost in the re-sale, as less than the cost of the chartered boat, so no big deal. These people don't count pennies, the same way I have to.

Most of these boats are parted out, “motors & controls”, “boat & trailers” sold as package deals. Don't know if it is done in the States now, but I am sure it is not much different.

Don't worry about the fins Mark, the first pair I saw, I laughed and said the same thing, I was publicly corrected. It is humbling to be wrong, but builds character.

When I was looking for motors, and later a inflatable this year, I bid on at least 40 motors, 20 or so, went way over my limit, another 20, I lost in the last seconds, by less than a dollar. I did get bummed out, but just started looking all over again.

I finally got what I wanted for the price limit I set. The same thing happened with the inflatable.

Know what you want, set a price, and don't go over it. Sooner or later you will get it.

Both sellers were not real happy with the prices I was paying, but were nice about it, and glad they were going to a good home. The older man I bought my motor from, has called three times to see if it is still running good, and the German Fireman that sold me my inflatable sent a E-Mail and asked for maiden voyage photos for the Fire Station lounge. He had owned the boat almost since new (15+ years). :)

I was very picky, going so far as to ask for serial numbers from the motors, and running them by the German Police to see if they were stolen, some where in Europe, at some time. If they refused to release this information, I passed on the auction, and waited for the next one.

This also made the registration in my name very easy after the purchase. The Police will give you a certificate saying that the motor, or boat in question is not “hot”, and was legally purchased from the owner.

Mark42, and Snappingturtle, thank you for your help. Snappingturtle, I TRULY appreceate all your help in searching for motors. 4 eyes are better than 2, and i thank you for keeping an eye out. I found some 225 mercs (1996) that were in good shape for 6500 WITH controls. however I dont know if I could find something better or closer that would nto requier me to pay shipping. Either way I have around a 6000 budget for outboards, and if their is REALLY a good deal then I will pay more, but im talkin a REALLY good deal on some newer motors. Give me your input on these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...ame=STRK:MEWAX:IT&viewitem=&item=270265597201
I just finished building the "cart" that the boat will sit on to allow me to roll her around my garage. My plan is to get the boat off the trailer and on to the cart and then pop the top of the boat and get down into the hull to see what im dealing with. I checked the Transome and she is in very good shape. When I do all of this i will be sure to include photos of everything. Thanks again for EVERYONE'S help! Ill be back with photos in 2 days!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Check out the Scream and Fly web forum for sale section also offshore only.com you'll find a lot of guys on both that are dealers or work in shops that deal only with high performance parts. You should be able to find a lot of parts that are used and takeoff's that the dealer put a fancier piece on to help the boat sell. I'm about to buy a stearing wheel from a guy in Daytona who's a hydrostream dealer he sells brand new ones with shipping for $60.

I don't see any reason to jump at a set of motors, keep an eye out and take your time to find the right deal.

I'd spend my time and efforts on getting the hull 100%. Rip that floor out, thoroughly inspect the stringers and make certain that your transom is perfect.

Then make it look good (just the basics you can add on later(( I'd do the hull all one color and leave off the typical stripe so you can add some cool graphics later and make the boat really stand out, you can even just use vinyl)) and rig it.

The beauty of outboards is how easy they are to swap.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Loews and Home Depot have recently discontinued there limited marine supplies. The brand is Attwood and the final prices are CHEAP-CHEAP?. The HD was selling SS 6? cleats at $2.50 each and the SS 8? cleats at $2.75 each. Had I known, I could have picked them up for you. (HINT TO OTHERS THAT MAY BE ABLE HELP)These are in store prices only however they may locate and transfer items for you. All items are final clearance & 10X less than WasteMarine. Most items are priced 20-25% of orig retail price. GOOD LUCk!!

I missed the 8" cleats in my area so I went to ebay got them for just a tad more - combined shipped on ebay is the way-to-win!!
