Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I also wanted to run an idea by you guys. I get LOADS and LOADS of questions in my PM, here in this thread, and on YouTube every day. I really like answering all the questions, but I STINK at typing. I was thinking of starting a readers mail video segment where I can take a whole bunch of questions and answer them in video form. Depending on how many I get would dictate how often I update the videos. Just an idea.

Dragon Naturally Speaking. ;) A readers mail segment would be cool on youtube as well for many followers. I may be the only one but honestly, I usually just read your posts and skip the videos. I'm not real sure why. I'm glad you still occasionally include a couple of pics.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

The stringers are officially bed in place, and most of them are cut to deck height. The PL needs to dry for a few day before I start to make PB fillets. The PL just bubbles up and looks like crap, and I want it perfect. I will also be adding 4 extra bulkheads to add to the strength.

Has Oops told anyone how he solved the foam drainage problem. He said one time he had it figured out, but his PM box is always full.

Anyway here are some pictures from this weekend and the first of two videos

Kinda nice to see deck height again. I used some 2X2 to hold up the outer stringers while a put PL under them.

Nice job on the stringers Jay!!! FYI A Plastic spoon dipped in paint thinner Really helps to smooth the PL and keep it from bubbling. Won't hurt it a bit. Nice to know AFTER the fact ain't it:rolleyes:

Yes, that would have been good to know yesterday. LOL

Here is part 2 of the stringer Video.

Super nice work Jay. Your boat is definitely going to be a keeper when you are done.

I've tried searching the forums to find more information about the drainage but ended up reading only bits from random posts.
Some people use rope before they pour the foam, once it sets they pull it out making a nice channel.
Well, lets wait till Oops chimes in.

Looks good. That foam is a great idea. Will resin bond to that PL?

It will stick to the PL, but I am adding more PB to the fillets to make them bigger.

I have heard of the rope thing before, but I would think it breaks the cells of the foam and will allow it to become like a sponge.

Jay,

Great work on the stringers. Everything looks clean and precise. I by no means want to tell you what to do but I would like to suggest a few things. Most boats in your size range probably didn't have any filets before the glass was laid in. The reason being is that the forces and stresses being transfered between the stringers the hull are carried almost exclusively by the glass and not the filet. So going back and applying a PB mix over top of the PL filet will gain you very little if anything in strength and is a waste of time. I understand your concern for ease of laying down glass. As an alternative you could simply apply a strip of CSM at the inside and outside edges to soften the transition some and then glass back over that with your planned schedule. The key with strength comes from how much the glass layers run out onto the hull bottom/sides. If you run the glass from the stringers 8-10 inches out then you will be fine, filet or no filet. I am just trying to save you a lot of mixing and applying a PB mix. It's up to you though. Keep up the great work.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

When deciding where to add the new lateral frames keep in mind where your forward seats and rear bench will be mounted. Adding stiffness there would be beneficial. Seems the captain chairs mounts are a big weak spot on most boats. With the screw holes, it?s also a place where water can enter. I tried to build mine like those offshore ?fighting? chairs on charter boats.

I?ve got an idea for making drainage passageways. It?s a bit ?out there? but I think it would work if you wanted to go to the trouble. You could use nylon window screen and airsoft bb?s (biodegradable or not, there?s both). Pour the bb?s along the low parts of the stringers and cover them with strips of screen. Then tape the edges of the screen to the hull and stringers. Pour the foam in up high and let it run down the hull so that it?s starting firm up as it hits the screen. The bb?s would leave a void for water to drain. Dumb or genius? You could use sand too, but it might grind on the glass and make a constant mess down the road?.. Or just build that sucker so than no water can get in. :D

Good point, but I did not want any air bubbles between the glass and the stringer. The PB or the PL fillet really does not add any strength, but merely makes it easier to lay the glass down without air bubbles in the crack.

I REALLY like that idea. Like a weeping tile system

I think you'll feel pretty confident that you're floor, sole, deck whatever it's called will be water proof underneath when you're finished. But i know, never say never. As a simple/cheap fix I taped down soaker hose and ran it to bilge. I drilled holes and plugged them with pvc collars w/threaded plugs. I figure I can vacuum it out now and then. These plugs are not set yet, but they look like this in the bilge (bottom of the inner stringer, right up against the transom):

I figure the only way water can get in is through the forward seat post screws or by condensation. I'll seal the post screw threads with permatex thread sealant.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but this issue always comes up. I would like to see how others deal with the issue when using foam as a structural element under the floor. I know Chris Craft brags about their foam usage. I wonder how they deal with it... There's bound to be a fool proof way.

Hey Jay,

You're doing great work! I love the videos, and I would love to see a mail video or two.

On another note, I just tried to pm Oops! for you, and it didn't kick it back to me, so maybe we'll all get lucky and he'll chime in before too long.:D

Keep up the good work!

Thanks a ton Scout. I would love to hear what he thinks, and what others think as well.

All of the things I have thought about just don't pan out

1. Have PVC pipe with holes drilled in it for drainage. Problem: Foam will seal the holes
2: Insert a large string, pour foam, rip out string. Problem: String will then break teh "closed" cells and the foam then becomes a sponge.
3. Use foam blocks Problem: You do not get as much "stiffness" and "puncture" protection from blocks.
4. I got nothin' :facepalm::confused:

What about cardboard tubes!! (Christmas Wrapping Paper). If they get wet they will dissolve in time. Fill the ends with Toilet paper to keep the foam out. Water will dissolve the TP.:p

Hey I'm a redneck Okie. What do I KNOW???

Is there some rule that says that all voids have to be filled "solid"

I don't think so, but that just is what foam does. It fills everything.
