Nice Boat but I would like for you too do a little reading on blisters here is a documentBoat Hull Blisters : Failed Blister Repairs by David Pascoe, Marine Surveyor and from what I have found out investigating blister, it is very true but nobody wants to talk about it as it is very expensive to do it right. Not saying yours is not done right but this guy has spent alot of time investigating the issue. Enjoy the new boat

Now she is sitting pretty in our slip

Then it was time for the wife to put her touch on the slip. We just had to have all the comforts of home.

I too have read that post, and that guy has never had anything positive to say from what I have read. If people listened to him, they would never buy any boat. There is no such thing as a perfect boat.

Trust me, I was there every day and made sure it was done right!

Fix it up and GO BOATING!!

Ok, time for a big update on the Carlson.

It was time to test fit the engine so that I could build the front engine mounts. I have tried to find a measurement for this, but Don S. said this is the best way. You use your hoist to lower the engine down on to the rear engine mounts... bolt them in... then use the hoist to adjust the front of the engine up and down. You then use you alignment bar to get it close, and then take you measurements.

My Son wanted to make sure she stayed nice and shiny!

Once I had my measurements, I sandwiched PLY together with CSM (instead of using PB) as it works well with flat surfaces. You just cut the CSM to the size you want, soak with resin and clam everything together.

Once they cured I used the circular saw to cut off the excess.

I also did the same thing with the seat mounts. I used 2X12s for this.

I then used PB to glue the mounts, trim pump base, battery base, and seat bases.

Two layers of 1708 and one layer of CMS finished off all the mounts.

I really rounded off the corners of the engine mounts so the glass would lay down nice.

Re: Friscoboater's 1986 Glastron Carlson CVX-18 Complete restoration thread

after sanding the deck with a belt sander to get rid of the seams, it was time to put down gel coat. I wanted to match it to the color of the outside of the boat so I got to mixing. I got really close.

file_zpsd0cbf01f.jpg

I did to coats of non waxed, and then added wax to the mix and did a final coat. The wax allows the gel to cure completely. If you do not use wax in the final coat, it stays sticky. I roll it on, and these are the rollers I use. Do not use cheap rollers, as they leave hairs all in the gel.

Both boats look great, Jay. Awesome work on the Carlson. The big boat looks very slick. The slip looks very homey.

New boat and resto project both look great. I don't don't know how you manage to get so much accomplished. You sure you don't have a secret twin?

Re: Friscoboater's 1986 Glastron Carlson CVX-18 Complete restoration thread

Hello Jay, I've been watching the Carlson project; very nice work you do! I have a question for you. Why don't you have any additional support between the transom and the stringers? The reason I'm asking is I have a transom / stringer setup similar (ish) to the Carlson that needs replaced and I would like to get rid of my OMC and put in a Alpha 1, and my transom does not seem to have enough support for that. I was thinking that some gussets between the transom and stringers would give it enough strength, and you aren't putting any in the Carlson (and you have WAYYY more motor than me). Curious as to why. Thank you!

I have never seen it done that way, but it sounds like it could be a good idea if you have room. I do not know if I have room beside the engine to do that. I really think the engine plays a part in the support between the transom and the stringers. I might be wrong though.

Well, well...Captain Jay has a beautiful looking new addition to the fleet...Congratulations, Sir...a more deserving individual, there isn't...consider me "jonesing" for more pics!
And the progress on the Carlson is quite outstanding, also...:D

Very good question!
From the limited research I have done and my general understanding of an I/O set up, I have come to the conclusion that all things being equal, the transom and the motor mounts/stringers, etc. being solid, all of the driving forces of the are basically equally spread throughout those mounting/attachment points, basically negating the need for "Knee" type stringers {gusset shaped connections between the transom and the stringers}, such as might be found in the design of a bass type boat with an outboard engine...
Like I said, that is my understanding...:)
