Well about 30 seconds later I get a text from this kid calling me every name in the book, that I did not know what I was talking about, and that the price he was asking was cheap (trust me it was WAAAY high). Once again I was stunned. I sent him a very light hearted text back just saying that I was trying to negotiate a little, that he was obviously he was young, and took my tactics incorrectly. At the end of the text i said if he wanted to talk again I was open. His text back... "Go F**** yourself"

Chances are "F***" was the only word he spelled correctly too.

i think there out of touch with realaty lol
You guys are right, it is not just kids. I did not want to offend anyone. I think more and more of the younger kids today are out of touch with human interaction though.

I have had a lot of CL experiences with people young and old that would make your head spin. I have had them in my own home, when the guy thought he was paying half of my asking price on an item. Little did he know I could pull up the emails on the phone and show him we never agreed to that, and he was going to have to come up with the rest of an amount we still had to agree on.

A lot of kids are out of touch with reality, but in most cases, the parents are to blame. Most kids were raised by a tv and video games. Parents would rather sit their kid down in front of a tv then spend time with them and interact with them. I was fortunate enough to have parents that made me play outside and and didn't let me have video games. My parent's took me everywhere with them.

I come across just as many rude, grumpy baby boomers on a daily basis as I do, young arrogant, self-centered kids.

Looks like we have some differing opinions here. Good points to all.

Let me clarify about the title issue. If you are the original titles owner you can get a lost title. This was a case of, the ski was purchased and the title was never acquired by him. So that means the original owner is twice removed. Happens all the time. The seller says oh just go get a bonded title and then disappears. You cannot do that here is Texas. Now I have heard there are ways if you got the item at auction, but I have not gone through that yet. Most hurricane states have very tough boat titles laws.

You guys telling him to report it stolen are telling him to file a false report. Why not just move on, sheesh.

I hear you man...want a real gas though? Try teaching kids/people like this...that's why colleges/universities are overrun with perpetual graduate students who eventually become tenured profs who stick around forever and never really teach anything. Most of today's young folks don't read and don't want to...nor do they want to interact with anyone unless it's via text...it's all toys, toys, toys. I taught journalism for 3 years at a state university here in Tejas and walked away because of the caliber of students...needless to say, I don't think much of the public school system here, even though there are a lot of good teachers trying their best in that system. We need a new gov and a new mindset...education is important and we should be willing to pay for it...look at how other nations are doing this...Japan comes to mind. As for CL, it's a mishmash of sane and crazy people...sometimes you find a good deal, other times you just get a good laugh out of it when someone thinks you're gonna pay THEIR price for something. Reality is a fickle thing, and so is human nature.

I have to agree with you on this one. Now, some of it would depend on how the discussion went, but if you really did wake me up, tell me my item was overpriced in your opinion and that what I was doing was illegal, I'd probably not be real polite in my response (I would also immediately be on the phone and/or net to find out if it was in fact illegal). If you then wrote back to tell me you were just negotiating, I'd be even more p'd off. Would I waste my time responding? Probably not.
!

Yep, I have to agree with this.
The kid could have handled it better and probably does not have much of a future as a salesman, but not being or wanting to be a professional salesman myself I would not have appreciated your tack either.

In the part of the world where I grew up there is a social dance and rules that must be followed. Behaving anyway else is considered an insult. Only the closest of friends are permitted to come at you that way.

I certainly would not have told you to F off but you could have talked for a week, offered me 3 times my asking, and it still would have been "no sale" to you.

Those negotiating tactics may work with some folks but they would just T me off. --Just saying.

The negotiating part bothered me, too. "I used my lengthy pause technique...." If you decide it's no sale because the price is locked in higher than you like, or there is a non-starter like no title, there is no negotiating. Deal's off. To tell someone the problems with his goods and still want to buy them is nothing but insulting.

Now, once the deal's off, and you want to be helpful, say "look, kid, I'm not buying but I know the market. If you want to get a sale, look around at your competition, and know that knowlegable buyers will want a title. Maybe you can get one and then go back on the market. Good luck and thanks for your time." But you can't go back to him.

I happen to know a thing or two about the pricing of certain antiques and collectibles. In the appropriate setting (including away from customers) I don't mind sharing that knowlege with a seller, but I would never do so if I was also interested in buying. It's one or the other: advice or purchase. never try both.

That's what car salesman do all the time....don't they? Plus we do the same, pointing out why it's not worth what they want to get a lower price. It's called haggling in these parts.

I just don't bother with people trying to sell me something I'm not willing to pay for. As for giving them advice I just don't go there. No need to ruffle feathers or lose sleep over it. I already know that I can't change the world...

i get a kick out of people selling things on cl, or kijiji, i mainly look around for old outboards, they want more money for non running motors, than the motor originally sold for new! sometimes i enquire, and get "all it needs is a tuneup....it ran the last time i used it". of course it ran the the last time they used it....or they couldnt have used it!! then i get the ol "thats ok, i will sell it in the spring when fishing season opens.
i just cant understand how people can think a motor that was purchased 40 years ago for about $250, and had all those years of abuse.....and most look like they were through a war.....is now worth $600???

Preachin' to the choir here brother, I deal with that on a daily basis at work. Citizens who percieve me as young think I can't possibly give advice to a grossly misinformed person twice my age.

It facinates me how so many topics here turn into psychological/sociological discussions by the third page. Don't believe me? That is, the one's who don't try and insult your intellect and intentions.

That said, I still love this place! This forum is like the big black book of everything boating!!!

I am here, just reading all the comments. I like the comments that take for the kid and my negotiation techniques would make someone made. Pick up the latest boating mag and you will see a nice article about how to get what you want (negotiating). One of the main points talk about using a "long pause" to make the other talk first, and give up more. Sometimes it works, and other times it does not. Even if it does not work you have another chance to try another tactic. Obviosly it did not work with this guys and things stopped. Being that this guy was way over priced, I was not going to drive over an hour unless I felt the guy would be realistic. Honestly I did not feel like I would ever get this one, but it is fun to try.

As far as the person that said it was rude to wake him up. It was 2:00 in the afternoon. I think that is a reasonable time to call right? :D

Its all in fun guys.

The whole system is screwed up. Friscoboaters experience is really just a microcosm of a deeper more serious issue that is affecting our youth.

Sadly, I think parenting skills have eroded terribly in our society as a whole. I work in a high school since retiring from the Air Force in 2007 and my wife has worked in schools as a teacher for 21 years. We both can say without a doubt parents along the way forgot how to teach their kids respect for authority and have somehow taught them that they deserve everything without having to work for it. I have TONS of examples of this.

I'm not saying all parents are bad...far from it. A lot of us know how to raise our kids to respect adults, work hard for what you have and treat others like you would have them treat you. BUT there are a lot of us who could use some help as well.

While I was in the military, I saw the quality of recruits coming in nosedive drastically over the last 10 years. Again, I attribute it to parenting and our mostly liberal way of thinking in America today.

See you on the lake

I could not agree with you more. People look at me like I am crazy making my kids say "yes mam" and "yes sir". Someone told me I was being too strict.

Does anyone else think the schools have gotten too soft? If my son fails a test, he can retake it until he passes.

If I fail at work, I do not get a second or third chance I hear "your fired!!!!!"
