No it is not the 96. The price was was way higher. As far as the title goes, the Texas parks and wildlife handles the titles here in Texas, not the DMV. When you buy a boat here here, you have lots of forms that you must have to transfer the boat in your name. So even just having the title is not enough. The reason Texas does this is because of the major hurricanes in the past years. People would squat on a boat that washed ashore, hide it, the owner would collect insurance, and when things cooled down, get a bonded title. This was so rampant they stopped doing that. Even to get a lost title you must have the original owner (the last titled owner at least) go to the TPWD and sign an affidavit to get a reprint. It is a nightmare. Most buyers do not know this and I thought about making a video and posting it on Craigslist educating people about non titled purchases. That should get some haters.

I cannot bring myself to post the ad, as the karma train would slap me. I had my fun with him, and the poor kid is going to have a hard enough life with that attitude.

I'm in my late 20's but absolutely hate texting for that reason... I REALLY hate how texting/ e-mailing is used as a means to be non-confrontational while it is truely being a woos.

Here's a excerpt from a CL in my area on a simmilar topic:

Stuff depreciates as soon as it leaves the store. Just because you paid $500 for it doesn't mean it's still worth $400. If you want to sell it, PRICE IT REASONABILY! The economy is rough for all of us. Used is used, whether it sits in storage for a year, your living room (no matter if the couch isn't sat on much), a garage, or wherever. Doesn't matter how old....it all depreciates the same. If someone can go buy a like item brand new for the price of your used item, yours is too much. Price it right if you really want to get rid of it and you won't have to keep listing the same stuff over and over. Just sayin'.

Sounds like they had a simmilar experience to you! In my opinion CL is just like a garage sale...most stuff should be dirt cheap, price negotiable, and the buyer should be getting the best end of the deal!

Send the ad to the local police and tell them you suspect it was stolen. That will let him in on the importance of a title. Besides a little payback is at the least entertaining.

Your right Jay, That kid will have a tough life. Kids today need to learn how to talk to folks with respect and still get the point across instead of getting mad and flippin out.

My daughters are 16 and 15 and have never had a cell, I'm not mean but what do they need it for, I never had one when I was a kid and turned out alright..........MMM.

I don't think the members of the younger generations are necessarily ruder any more than I think the members of older generations are wiser. Many idiots survive to old age, unaffected by the stuff of life that has happened around them. Although I am now an "old dude" I have always felt that way.

However, and of course generalizing, there are many valid studies about generational differences and what is important to each. One difference is the "hidden message" associated with the means of communication (McLuhan: The medium is the message). Older folks see a text as rude or an email as too casual; young ones regard a telephone call as a rude and over-demanding interruption. No right or wrong; just a difference.

So sad for the guy. I can predict what is his life going to be already. Just hope that I will not cross his path.

I find that the apple does not fall far from the tree. Kids like this usally come from parents who acted the same way. Kids that come from a good respectable family usally act much more mature.

If I had a stranger call me up and suggest I was doing something illegal, I may not have gone Bobby Knight on him, but I certainly would not be happy about it nor would I have appreciated the long pause and the matter of fact attitude.

I have to agree with you on this one. Now, some of it would depend on how the discussion went, but if you really did wake me up, tell me my item was overpriced in your opinion and that what I was doing was illegal, I'd probably not be real polite in my response (I would also immediately be on the phone and/or net to find out if it was in fact illegal). If you then wrote back to tell me you were just negotiating, I'd be even more p'd off. Would I waste my time responding? Probably not.

Who knows, maybe the kid's dad is a real d bag too and gave his son a stolen, nonfunctional POS. If I had to live with that kind of parenting, I'd be pretty chaffed, too!

Watercraft and cars are two different animals in this state.

Ok, so it took 10 seconds instead of 5 to figure out how to get a replacement Texas boat title:

How do I replace a lost or destroyed title for my boat and/or outboard motor?

?To replace a lost or destroyed Texas title for a vessel/boat, submit form PWD 143M (PDF 405.1 KB).
?To replace a lost or destroyed Texas title for an outboard motor, submit form PWD 144M

I don't give a s**** about legality
^^^This is a statement of a moron... Regardless of age.^^^

and my Dad gave me this ski to sell and I could have what sold it for, so F*** off, and hung up.

This is a statement of a kid... An immature, stupid, moronic kid; most likely having lacked quality parenting. People with no regard for right and wrong, respect, dignity, honor, integrity, and or any discernable level of moral values were most likely raised by similar people.

It may be a good idea to report him to the police. If the ski is indeed stolen, you may bring justice to someone; and keep some unknown potential buyer, whose not quite so saavy, a whole lot of heartache and trouble.

So pretty much like every other state... Certainly not impossible. Print out form, take it in to random government office, show ID and some cash, and walk out with title. Nothing mysterious or impossible for the current titled owner to do.

Yes, if you buy a boat without a transfer of some sort, and THEN try to get a title, you are obviously going to have issues. As you rightly should, in the letter of the law it isn't yours.

As a member of the law enforcement community I'd like to ask you NOT to call the police. I'd say about 1/3 of the motor vehicle listings on CL are an attempt to take your money and put it in their pocket. Our detectives cruise CL for stolen items all the time with great results! If it's stolen, it'll catch up with him. It's difficult to sell a whole stolen motor vehicle. Parts on the other hand, not so much.

He's never gonna sell it at that price with that attitude anyway. It'll end up next to his house with a ripped tarp on it, smelling like cat pee, and covered in moss on a pile of rotten firewood...maybe then he'll regret not taking your 200 bucks and it'll click. Or maybe not.

Speaking of Karma Police, more than likely, this is how it will play out:

Buyer: "I'm interested in your ski, but it's not worth that much. Would you take $400 for it?"
Seller: "F-U. It's worth more than that! Go F*** youself!"
Buyer: (15 minutes later in a different voice) "I'm interested in your ski. When can I come see it?" ...as he prepares to beat the crap out of a smart mouthed kid with no manners...

I'm 21 and I'm not new to craigslist ads, ebay classifieds, and motor pool auctions.

I've invested time, patience, and money into everything from motorcycles, cars, and more recently my '77 formula thunderbird. Negotiating is best done face to face and what you just described is an all to common problem.

One of my personal rules "Whether its a car, a boat, or a home, it is an investment and every investment has its own unique challenges or circumstances. It is the investors responsibility to know what they are."

With that being said it's even more relevant in the case where the person obviously cares more about making a profit than what is actually feasible. Pretty much your going to have to play the role of a rational person dealing with irrational people. Someone is going to have to fold.

I generally show up with more than what the seller is asking for. This is just a reassurance I'm not here to waste their time. This generally eases the tension during negotiations their not so much worried about you low balling them their more concerned with getting you to pay what they want. That's when u can start nit picking about every detail and deducting from the asking price accordingly. Afterwards it becomes like poker, "A smart man is never afraid to fold where an idiot is always prepared to call."

Personally I can't stand negotiating on items in good condition. I have bought cars with busted head gaskets and broken ball joints for $200 and did the repairs myself. I bought this boat for $500 with water in the tank, and needed a carburetor rebuild, all because the boat didn't idle under 1500 rpms.

Keep a look out and a sharp eye cause great deals are out there. Also when your on craigslist change the area because some of the best deals i've found i've had to drive 8-16 hours.

It's not just "those damn kids".

I've had some kind of title "runaround" with ever boat I've bought. That'd be 5 boats and counting.

People just NEVER get it right.

The main issue is that people don't pay attention to where they keep the title when they get it. How anyone could be dumb enough to throw away or lose a title is beyond me. Common sense would dictate that if you lose it, you're going to be in for a hassle later on.

The second issue is they don't get the bank or finance company removed as a security interest when they pay the boat off. The final issue is that having the boat title doesn't automatically mean you are the registered owner of the trailer it sits on. They, in most cases, are seperate vehicles.
