The negotiating part bothered me, too. "I used my lengthy pause technique...." If you decide it's no sale because the price is locked in higher than you like, or there is a non-starter like no title, there is no negotiating. Deal's off. To tell someone the problems with his goods and still want to buy them is nothing but insulting.

Now, once the deal's off, and you want to be helpful, say "look, kid, I'm not buying but I know the market. If you want to get a sale, look around at your competition, and know that knowlegable buyers will want a title. Maybe you can get one and then go back on the market. Good luck and thanks for your time." But you can't go back to him.

I happen to know a thing or two about the pricing of certain antiques and collectibles. In the appropriate setting (including away from customers) I don't mind sharing that knowlege with a seller, but I would never do so if I was also interested in buying. It's one or the other: advice or purchase. never try both.

Guess I was not clear enough. Advise was given via text after negotiations were off.

Just to get it straight.

Just about every ad I've read on CL are people wanting way more than what the item is worth so why be surprised?

It fascinates me how so many topics here turn into psychological/sociological discussions by the third page.

In fairness, Friscoboater's inclusion of the phrase "and a lesson about young people today" in the thread title pretty much made this a psychological/sociological discussion on the first page ;)

it's even stayed open longer than a couple of hours! ;)

hw's ur day bn so fr, mark? :)

LOL! I haven't looked in on this one since Friday and I must say I'm a little surprised to find it still open. I have my party barge up for sale and I'm amazed at the people who are "very interested" then suddenly disappear. Comes with the territory I guess, but I find it very disconcerting that so many members (of all ages) of our society seem to lack any sort of focus or integrity.

I have sold lots of stuff on CL. 20% actually show-up rate is about par for the course. I will certainly no longer plan my day around such things.

And then you have the fellow who drove up from Tenn. to buy my boat trailer.
I am afraid that I might have been a bit rude, (well maybe not rude but certainly disbelieving) darned if he did not show up, right on time, agree upon cash in hand, no last second try to talk me down. A pleasure to do business with and I hope he thought the same of me.

This has always been my experience as well. I will say, I only sell a few things a year, but my experiences have all been positive. A few scammers here and there, but they are easy to spot (and ignore)

Ok for you texas guys out there as far as buying untitled craft in texas. According to the tpwd you have to get a form and fill it out and send it to the last registered owner via certified mail (tpwd will give you the name and address as long as you have the registration number) and ask the po to sign it. Three things can happen: 1 they sign it and send it back to you and you get the title in your name, 2 You never hear from them: at that point you take the registered letter to tpwd and after a short waiting period they will issue another title, 3. the po informs you the craft was stolen and you legally have to return the craft with out delay and you guessed it it is your loss. So the moral of the storie is if your are going to buy with out a title dont spend more than you are willing to loose.

I have done it a couple of times one was an older tinnie in fact it was easier. The boat was older that computer records so they just had me fill out a form and whala I got the title. The second I had to go through the certified letter deal. Luckly for me the PO signed it and sent it back to me. I now have titles on both. Just dont buy one and fail to title because there is a penalty for every month of untitled ownership it is calculated on a daily basis.

if in doubt you can research it your self by googling texas parks and wildlife department.:D

BTW Jay

I had kind of the same experience. This was a listing for a chinese 4wheeler that was listed for 50 dollars less than I could buy a new one. I emailed the guy and ask for some pics and his reply was come on dude it a running 4 wheeler for 550 what do you need pics for? My response was well I am not going to make a 6hour round trip in the hopes that I might like something the I can buy new for 50 dollars more. and that is when the sting of profanitied started. After bantering back and forth via email he finally called me and gave me an ear full. Needless to say there was not a chance in **** I was going to buy anything from him.

I am a list it cheap and get it moved kind of guy. IE. 300 ft of 6' 12 ga chain link 300' of top rail 8 thick wall corners and 20 line post new 1900.00 wanted it gone listed for 300.00 it was gone 6 hours.

I disagree. I often point out problems with someone's goods to prove that what they are asking is too high. Pawn shop owners also do this all the time to get a better price.

This would **** me off more than anything. Someone calling me "kid" when I'm trying to enter in an agreement to buy or sell something is just plain rude and demeaning. Its the same as calling someone "boy".
