Sawzall with short stiff blade would be my weapon of choice to cut the joint to decapitate. I'm leaning towards decapitation now so you can flip the hull and really get to the bottom of that hull. She's gunna need a LOT of work!!!

And if you don't decap based on your yard and the LANDLORD....you can always take yoga/beer classes like me to get into those real tough spots. It's the newest trend in UPOVER.

Hi woody. Tried the sawzall yesterday.....It wasn't very successfull,:grumpy: so I stopped. It was cutting into the hull lip too deeply for my liking. The hull lip is twice the thickness of the cap lip. I'm getting a skinny diamond disc today. The one I have is 5mm thick and I'm leading towards cutting a small slice from the inside first, so the blade cuts has a least line of resistance to follow.... at least that's how I'm thinking.:D

That's the right attitude!
Game on and glad to hear it! Time to grind that little thang down. Get geared up with the right tools and protection gear cause you gots a whirlwind of mess and pain coming your way!!

Hi kcassells, got a 3m respirator, 2 tyvek suits some gloves and a bucket of talcum powder. I the heat here, the talc will be a grey sludge on my skin within 10 minutes!!!! Gotta love living in the tropics! Grinder, check. Saw, check. Need a shop vac wet and dry.

I have question???? Sorry if asked and answered elsewhere on the forum. Can I dampen/wet the fibreglass with water to keep the dust down?

Yeah I know but I have the opposite weather problems you have rick! Where I live we don't have a winter. The only ice I ever see is in my glass to keep my beverage cold! So I'm trying to be creative (or dumb!) in the fact I must grind in my front yard, and not have the whole street on my back!

In regards to the sawsall, best is if you can keep the plate flat to the surface for the cutting but in alot of cases you will have to pull that back/compensate off the surface to compensate for the lower areas that can get cut too. The do make different depth blades. The best is the bi-metal fine tooth type which will give you better control of the tool when you cut.
I have heard of guys actually attaching/tapping or making a filter to a box fan as it exits the boat. wet grinding will simply just destroy your grinder real quick. Some guys even tapped up or rigged their grinder with the vacuum hose. On another note I have seen air grinders that have that built in feature.
Once the neighbors get pissed it can become a real pia!

That heats a real dilema. Closing the boat in with plastic sounds like it will turn into a steam tray.

Bunnings has a 20lt workshop vac for $78 & maybe some shade cloth to cover the opening while you work inside will help reduce some of the dust

Well after much deliberation and taking all the comments and advice from all the experts here, I've made an executive decision. Today I cut the back off as suggested before the hull stress cracks photos were shown. The main reason to do this was the difficulty in the decap, (it was a PIA just to do the little bit I did) and the storage/space I have and that I'll be rolling her on her side to do the bottom of the hull.

Now you're getting somewhere! Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones, like me, and the fiberglass itch wont bother you too much. As for bothering the neighbours, can you grind while most of them are at work?

Nice! Lots of room to work now! The grinding sucks, no way around that, and for you it will be not only itchy, but hot and sweaty as well! :flame:Good luck! Happy New Year!!

Its room/access that's what was holding me back too. I needed to cut more floor out but didn't want to, until the cap thing was decided. Admiral has me on a short leash today, SHE WROTE A LIST!

Heading back to work tomorrow morning at 4am, drive North (that means hotter) for 4 hours. Back at home Tuesday.

Not looking forward to the itch but looking forward to the glass work and cutting stuff up... I have some left over roof sheets 6m long by 3m wide, have enouugh steel to build a temporary roof over it all for the wet season soon to be upon us......maybe a cyclone too! then I'll have lots of work too!
